Situation/Summary:

Hellas Gold is a Greek mining company 95% owned by Canadian company Eldorado
Gold. Since 2003, Hellas Gold holds the rights to the Cassandra Mines, including an
open-pit gold mine in Skouries, located on the Halkidiki peninsula in Northern
Greece. Eldorado took over operations in February 2012 and tensions have arisen
with the local community relating to lack of adequate consultation, economic and
environmental concerns as well as perceived social impact.

Local communities and civil society have raised concerns about the impact of these
operations on ground water, noting that the mines will require vast deforestation and
that the proposed Skouries mine is above the region’s main aquifer. Moreover, locals
argue that the operations would have negative impacts on traditional economic
including beekeeping, farming, fishery, forestry and tourism, affecting local peoples’
livelihoods.

Purpose of Structure:
Company management tool for exploitation of mineral deposits

Situation/Summary:

At Mestersvig, East Greenland the Danish company Nordisk Minesel-Skab operated

a lead-zinc mine from 1956 to 1963. The mine was under-ground, located c. 10 km
inland from Kong Oscars Fjord. 554,000 tons of ore was mined, and 58,000 tons of lead
concentrate and 75,000 tons of zinc concentrate produced. A road was constructed
between the site and the fjord, where concentrate was shipped out. Tailings from the
concentrator were discharged at the mine on a nearby mountain slope, from where
most has slid into the river Tunnelelv flowing to Kong Oscars Fjord. Kong Oscars
Fjord is affected by heavy metal pollution for many years. Overall levels are expected
to decline only at a slow rate, as the contaminated material becomes more and more
dispersed and gets mixed up with or covered by non-polluted sediments. Lead and
zinc concentrations in the marine environment may be expected to fluctuate with high
levels following coastal erosion of major contaminated land areas, especially at the
quay, followed by decreasing levels in periods with no erosion.
