Balance between ethical principles

Respecting patient autonomy

and in the patient’s best interest-concern for well-being of the patient

Patient incompetent- relative make decision in the best interest of the patient

Competence-able to make decision in their own best interest, understand the decision that they
gonna make, and the consequences of their decision

Eg: Not competence-Alzheimer, 85 years old, don’t understand their own decision, made by
immediate family member who can act in the best interest of the patient(Spouse or child for
example)

balance out compassion and integrity.

what about giving her the transfusion, and then keeping the procedure a secret from her allowing you
to save her life while keeping her happy at the same time. this could be a terrible answer also, so im
not sure.

+hahaha12345678901234 I know it seems like that option would work, and satisfy everyone, but it
isn't the morally or ethically right choice. By lying to her you are violating your physician-patient
relationship (called the Fiduciary relationship) which entails mutual trust. You are also violating her
informed decision to refuse treatment and her right to autonomy. A physician must always do what is
in the best interest of their patient (principle of beneficence) but unfortunately sometimes that means
not saving their life when they had the power to do so. Not everything that is tragic is unethical!

Why medicine ?

Just like any medical interviewer can easily retort to the generic "I want to help people" answer, so
can a medical interviewer retort to the response the given in this video with a "why not pursue a
research career instead?" What differentiates medicine other sciences it that it not just a science.
Although, as physicians, we must all be well acquainted with the subtleties of pathology and
physiology (which is a science), what is equally important is interpersonal skills and your passion for
interacting and developing meaningful relationships with others. A better answer, then, to the age-old
"why medicine?" should include something about your interaction with people, why it adds meaning,
and perhaps even enriches your life.

Purpose behind the MMI

The Michael DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University began
developing the MMI to address two widely recognized problems:

1. Traditional interview formats have long been criticized for not

accurately predicting performance in medical school, and
2. Patient complaints regarding the performance of a physician
frequently relate to non-cognitive skills, such as interpersonal skills,
professionalism and ethical/moral judgment.
Through 17 NSEP sites, more than 24,000 registered people who inject drugs were served in
2010, with over 300,000 NSEP kits containing fresh needles and syringes distributed.
Activities of the NSEP in Malaysia include:
 Exchanging used needles and syringes for sterile ones
 Safe disposal of used injecting materials
 Reaching out and educating PWID on HIV/AIDS and other related health issues
 Providing PWID with referrals, rehabilitation, health and welfare agencies
 Encouraging safer sex practices through education and condom distribution

What is the Malaysia Age of Consent?

The Age of Consent in Malaysia is 16 years old. The age of consent is the minimum
age at which an individual is considered legally old enough to consent to participation in
sexual activity. Individuals aged 15 or younger in Malaysia are not legally able to
consent to sexual activity, and such activity may result in prosecution for statutory
rape or the equivalent local law.
Malaysia statutory rape law is violated when an individual has consensual sexual
contact with a person under age 16. This law is applicable to both heterosexual couples,
and homosexual men. There is no age of consent for homosexual women.
