2. SIZING METHODOLOGY
iuydfgewfugeuygf

2.1. EROSIONAL VELOCITY

fgewifyugewufowe
The erosional velocity can be determined by the empirical equation below, ref [1]:
𝐶
𝑉𝑒 =
√𝜌𝑚
Where:
Ve is erosional velocity, ft/s
C is constant, empirical
ρm is gas/liquid mixture density at flowing pressure and temperature, lbs/ft3.

The empirical constants (C- values) are shown in the following table.
Table 2.1 Empirical Constant (C – values)
C Value Services

100 Solids free fluids continuous service

125 Solids free fluids intermittent service.

Solids free fluids where corrosion is controlled by inhibition or

150-200
by employing corrosion resistant alloys in continuous service

Solids free fluids where corrosion is controlled by inhibition or

Up to 250
by employing corrosion resistant alloys in intermittent service

2.2. MINIMUM VELOCITY

If possible, the minimum velocity in two-phase lines should be about 10 feet per second (3.048
meters per second) to minimize slugging of separation equipment. This is particularly important in
long lines with elevation changes.

2.3. PRESSURE DROP

The pressure drop is calculated using the following calculation step:
 Moody Friction Factor
 Pressure Drop

Equations used on the spreadsheet are presented below.

Friction Factor
The moody friction factor for two phase is assumed to be an average of 0,015. This assumption
based on pipe friction data for clean commercial steel pipe (Crane, “Flow of Fluids Through Valves,
Fittings, and Pipe, 1988, pp A-25).

Pressure Drop
Pressure drop shows the pressure loss due to system. The pressure drop calculation is based on
Darcy formula from the GPSA Engineering Data Book ref [8]
0.000336 𝑓 𝑊 2
∆𝑃 =
𝑑𝑖 5 𝜌𝑚
Where:
∆p is pressure drop, psi/100 feet equivalent pipe length
di is inner diameter, inches
f is moody friction factor, dimensionless
ρm is density, lbs/ft3
W is mass flow, lbs/hr
