Trump President, United States of America The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Washington, DC 20500 Dear Mr. President: ‘Thank you for graciously inviting sheriffs to meet with you and your staff on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, for a productive working-session on improving safety for ‘American citizens and for your steadfast support for law enforcement professionals, ‘As we discussed Tuesday, NSA strongly opposes allowing dangerous and violent criminal felons out of federal prison early. Sheriffs will have to arrest most them again at the county level and that will shift the cost and responsibility to us without fixing the underlining problems of violent crime and drug and human trafficking in the country. The legislation by Senators Durbin and Grassley would do just that. We ask your help in keeping these criminals in federal prison and finding solutions to sentencing challenges that doesn't put our citizens at risk. ‘Additionally, as we discussed, the immigration and border security system in American is broken and Congress and your administration are working on a bipartisan and comprehensive solution to restore integrity to the rule of law. Sheriffs are at the tip of this spear. Sheriffs remain concemed that sanctuary cities impose tremendous costs on America, encourage illegal immigration, provide a haven for criminal illegals, and put law enforcement and law-abiding citizens at risk. Moreover, January 17 was an historic day for Sheriffs. We worked with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to roll out the Basic Ordering Agreement with 17 Florida Sheriffs which aims to prevent the release of criminal aliens back into the community. The new process clarifies that aliens detained by these jurisdictions are held under the color of federal authority, thereby affording local law enforcement liability protection from potential litigation because of faithfully executing their public safety duties.
