Question : What are the advantages and disadvantages of a bi-directional DC to a DC
converter?

Answer:

Bi-directional converters are suitable for dc power flow in both directions.

Mostly used in energy storage in battery bank, renewable energy systems etc.

There are two types,

1. Isolated DC-DC Converters

2. Non Isolated DC-DC Converters

Isolated DC-DC Converter:

Advantages :

1. Isolated DC-DC converters have high voltage isolation from several hundreds
to thousand volts depending on the type of standard .
2. Output can be configured to be either positive or negative or floating ground
for various equipment.
3. They have strong noise and interference blocking capability thus provide the
load with a cleaner DC source which is required by many sensitive
load(Medical Applications).
Dis Advantages:

1. Size is large.
2. Core saturation problem.

3. Switching losses.

4. Less efficiency as compared to the non isolated bidirectional dc-dc converter.

5. Transformer is used to step up the voltage which creates more leakage losses due to
the inductance in the winding.

Example of isolated converters: fly back, forward push-pull etc

In Simple,if you have high currents or frequencies riding around one part of a circuit
that you'd like to protect another part of the circuit from,Noise/transients, safety
requirements, floating ground is required use isolated converters or else use a non-
isolated converter.

Non isolated DC-DC Converter:

A non-isolated dc-dc converter has a dc path between its input and output,

the input and the output of a non-isolated converter share the common ground.

Step up voltage is done without transformer.

Advantages:

1.Circuit is simple

2.Reduced switching losses and number of switches.

3.Circuit helps to reduce ripple content.

4.peak to peak Voltage and current are low.

Non isolated dc-dc-dc can be classified as Buck mode and Boost mode

Boost Mode:

Boost converters can step-up the output voltage without a transformer. Due to a single
switch, it has a high efficiency. The input current is continuous.

However The output voltage is very sensitive to changes in duty cycle.

The average output current is less than the average inductor current, and a much higher
rms current would flow through the filter capacitance, resulting in the use of a larger
filter capacitor than those of buck regulator.

Buck Mode:
The buck converter also requires only one switch and has high efficiency, but the input
current is discontinuous and a smoothing input filter is normally required.

Conclusion:

The Non-isolated bidirectional dc-dc converter is quite good and more sophisticated
compare to the isolated bidirectional dc-dc converter.

The non-isolated bidirectional dc-dc conveter with pi filter to produce more efficiency.

Less space, less weight, reduced switching losses, reduced conduction losses are all
advantages.

Absence of transformer reduces harmonics in the circuit.

It is operated the efficiency is 89% and switching frequency is 100 Khz.

Please correct me if i am wrong at any point.

Thanks.

Karthik.

A DC-to-DC converter is an electronic circuit or electromechanical device that converts
a source of direct current (DC) from one voltage level to another. It is a type of electric
power converter. Power levels range from very low (small batteries) to very high (high-
voltage power transmission). for the more detail visit our site

Chopper is a device that converts dc into dc. It is known as dc-dc converter.

It converts fixed dc into variable dc.

Chopper are of two types-

1. Step up chopper
2. Step down chopper
In step up chopper when the supply is given the current rises at first instant and then
after it comes down. But the current does not attains its natural zero. At that instant
again due to capacitor charging the current increases and again current decreases. This
cycle gets repeated. But due to extra current during discharging the the chopper
becomes as the step up device.

Step up chopper is a device which gives more output than input supplied. As
in case of transformer.

To understand the DC to DC converter operating principle and functionality, let us
consider the working principle of DC to DC boost converter.

DC to DC Boost Converter

The low input DC voltage is converted into high output DC voltage using DC to DC boost
converter. As the input voltage is stepped up compared to output voltage, hence, it is
also called as a step up converter. Generally, DC to DC converters can be designed using
power semiconductor switching devices and discrete electrical and electronics
components.

In DC to DC converter, the converter operates in two modes:

 Continuous Conduction Mode

 Discontinuous Conduction Mode
DC to DC Boost Converter Continuous Conduction Mode Circuit

The continuous conduction mode circuit of the DC to DC boost converter is shown in the
figure that consists of an inductor, capacitor, switching device, diode, and input voltage
source. This boost converter circuit switch is controlled using a pulse width modulator
(PWM). If this switch is in ON state, then energy will be developed in the inductor and
thus more energy will be delivered to the output.

DC to DC Boost Converter Discontinuous Conduction Mode Circuit

The discontinuous conduction mode circuit of the DC to DC boost converter is shown in

the figure that consists of elements such as capacitor, inductor, voltage source, diode,
and switching device. In this discontinuous conduction mode, if the switch is in ON
state, then energy will be delivered to the power storage element, inductor. If the switch
is in OFF state for some period, then the inductor current will reach zero until the next
switching cycle is on. Thus, the capacitor gets charged and discharged with respect to
the input voltage. But, here the output voltage in discontinuous conduction mode is less
than the output voltage in continuous conduction mode.
Similarly, buck converters are used for converting high input DC voltage into low output
DC voltage. Buck-boost converters are used for maintaining output DC voltage high or
low based on the input DC voltage source. If the input DC voltage is high, then the
output will be low and vice-versa. Thus, we can maintain regulated DC voltage using
buck-boost converters.

Working Principle of Boost Converters:

Electrical power circuit designers mostly choose the boost mode converter because the
output voltage is always high when compared to source voltage.

In this circuit power stage can be operates in two modes Continuous Conduction Mode
(CCM).

1. Continuous Conduction Mode:

2. Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM).

Continuous Conduction Mode:

The Boost Converter Continuous Switching Mode is constructed with given components
that are inductor, capacitor and input voltage source and one switching device. In this
inductor acts as a power storage element. The boost converter switch is controlled by the
PWM (pulse width modulator). When switch is ON the energy is developed in the
inductor and more energy is delivered to the output. It is possible to convert high
voltage capacitors from low voltage input source. The input voltage is always greater
than the output voltage. In continuous conduction mode, the current is increased with
respect to input voltage.

2. Discontinuous Conduction Mode:

The discontinuous conduction mode circuit is build with inductor, capacitor, switching
device and input voltage source. Inductor is a power storage element same as
continuous conduction mode. In discontinuous mode, when the switch is ON the energy
is delivered to the inductor. And if the switch is OFF some period of time the inductor
current reaches to zero when next switching cycle is on. The output capacitor is charging
and discharging with respect to input voltage. The output voltage is less than compared
to the continuous mode. DC-DC Converter Types like Buck Converter and Boost
Converter etc.

This book is a collection EAP research material. It is very handy having it in one organized book that's
always at your fingertips. The big problem for me was that the different EAP materials weren't covered
uniformly. There was a huge emphasis on IPMC (most likely because that is the EAP that excites the
editor the most). I was really hoping for more information on Ionic Polymer Gels (IPG) but found that they
were only mentioned in passing (covering 2 pages).
You will most likely give this book a `5' if you are interested in IPMC but otherwise the local university
library is the best bet for studying this exciting subject.

A delightful book dealing with the soon to be hottest topic in biomedical engineering, electroactive
polymer actuators. Virtually every known method of generating displacement is introduced, except of
course for the ones I have kept secret. This book is a must for anyone interested in actuators and
sensors, including electrical engineers. Applications reach far beyond medicine, and there is simply no
other textbook available that covers this topic. It is thorough in every way, covering the basic sciences,
fabrication techniques and applications. I wish I could work in Dr. Bar-Cohen's lab!
