Cause
Some types of document reduce the paper separation capability of ADF. This induces double feeding and results in
the symptom.

Factory Measures
The separation pad [1] in the separation reserve guide assembly is changed to a new type with a separation sheet
which consists of another material. In addition, the compression spring [2] is also changed to a new type to which
the pressure of spring is increased.

The material and shape of the separation sheet of the new type separation pad is changed and a weight [1] is added.
The spring pressure of the new type compression spring is set higher than the old type. (old type: 274.8g, new type:
344.2g). The old type compression spring is metallic color,while the new type is blue.

Service work
When the above symptom occurs, prepare the separation pad unit (FM1-A719), the reinforcement plate (FC9-4978)
and 2 pieces of P screw (XB4-5301-005). Then, follow the steps A) & B) below

A) Replacement with the new type separation pad unit

1) Remove the 2 parts: the separation pad and the compression spring referring to the service manual, and replace
with the separation pad unit (FM1-A719-000) that consists of the new type separation pad and the new type
compression spring.

B) Attach the reinforcement plate to the back side of the separation reverse guide assembly following the steps
below.

1) Open the feeder cover [1] and remove one screw.

2) Open the ADF and detach the front cover [1]. (2 screws)

3) Close the ADF. And then, detach the feeder cover [1]. (1 screw, 1 positioning pin)

4) Remove the tray holder [1]. (1 screw)

5) Remove the rear cover [1]. (2 screws)

[Caution] Remove the rear cover with the two claws released.

6) Disconnect the 9 connectors from the ADF driver PCB.

7) Remove the document tray [1]. (1 connector, 1 screw)

8) Remove the ADF motor unit [3]. (1 tension spring [1], 1 connector [2] and 2 screws )

9) Remove the left hinge [1]. (5 screws)

10) Remove the harness guide [1]. (5 connectors, 1 screw)

11) Remove the clutch support plate [1]. (2 connectors, 2 screws)

12) Remove the feed unit [1]. (8 screws)

13) Open the separation reverse guide assembly. And then, pull and remove it in the direction of the arrow.

14) Attach the reinforcement plate [2] (FC9-4978) to the separation reverse guide assembly [1] with the 2 screws [3]
(XB4-5301-005).

[Caution]
1. When attaching the reinforcement plate, check that the bosses [4] (2 locations) are engaged into holes of the
reinforcement plate and then, tighten 2 screws.
2. After attaching the reinforcement plate, check that there is no gap between the reinforcement plate and the
separation reverse guide assembly.

15) Reassemble all the removed parts in the reverse order from step 13).
16) Feed the originals by the ADF to ensure no jam occurs.
17) If the double feeding still occurs even by implementing the above service work, then replace only the
compression spring by the one (FU7-5343) with higher spring pressure (474.8g). Color of the compression spring
(FU7-5343) is red and is set as a service part for imageRUNNER ADVANCE C5051 series.
When replacing the compression spring with FU7-5343, paper separation performance improves, but a slight noise
may be generated at the time of feeding originals depending on an environment where the machine is used. A noise
tends to be generated under the conditions such as high print density and high moisture content in originals.
