Site Visit Report

1. Introduction
A site visit was conducted to Lower Iguwa Hydropower Project (6.9 MW)
site from 5th January to 8th January, 2018 by the team members of Infra
Partners Pvt. Ltd. The team consisted of the following members.

Siddha Raj Pant CEO- Infra Partners

Biraj Gautam Sr. Engineering Geologist – Infra Partners
Bal Mukunda Joshi Civil Engineer – Infra Partners
The purpose of the visit was to apprise with the
project location, selection of project layout, ascertain
the geological, hydrological and hydraulic suitability
for placement of various structures on the ground and
in the layout.
Site visit was facilitated by the senior managers of the
Rairang Hydropower at Iwa Khola site.

2. Location and Accessibility

Lower Iguwa Hydropower Project is situated at Taplejung district. Project
location is accessible through a under construction track road to
Kanchanjanga Base Camp along the left bank of Iwa Khola. Some sections
of this track pass through a head race pipe alignment of currently under
construction Iwa Khola hydropower by the company. Geographically, the
project area as per the license issued by the DOED lies between latitudes
27°16'41" N and 27°17'04" N and longitudes 87°51'55" E and 87°52'21" E.

3. Project Layout
This section describes about the viability of different project layouts studied

during field visit. The boundary of the project as per the given coordinates

does not have enough elevation (head) to execute the project in the given
size. Therefore, the developer intends to increase head by shifting the
headworks to upstream of a suspension bridge at OM gaun. Proposed
section is found suitable for the purpose. It is also accessible by the road
(track) linking to Mechi Highway at Ganesh Chowck. In the new scheme
project layout is suitable to follow the right bank of the river. Left bank has
a few kholsis and vertical cliff, which will make the conveyance length
longer and difficult to construct. A short tunnel may be required just after
the intake and can be connected to pipe in the downstream till the surge
tank, powerhouse. Powerhouse of this project is located just at the
upstream of headworks of currently under construction Iwa khola by the
company.

4. Head works
Headwork area lies at an elevation of 890m. It is at the border of the
upstream project. On both sides of the weir axis lies a stable bed rock and
is at the straight length of meandering river. There is plenty of space
available for settling basin and intake structures at the left bank. Plenty of
rocks are available around the headworks area. Sourcing the construction
material will be relatively easier and cost effective in this project.

5. Headrace Pipe Alignment

Headrace pipe alignment from the right bank option will pass through
heavy rock excavation i.e. through Vertical cliff in most of the sections and
private land. Meandering of the river will result in a few crossings in Iwa
khola before reaching to surge tank. Although both the banks are
accessible, left bank is more suitable for the pipe alignment considering
construction ease. So the option from right bank is ruled out.
Pipe alignment on the left bank generally follows contours without any
significant slope stability issues throughout the alignment comprising
alluvial and colluvium deposits and also some sections of rocky area.
Headrace pipe alignment at few section also passes through private land.

6. Surge Tank
At the outset it is highly likely that conveyance will be a pressure pipe
following the natural contours. Therefore, a surge tank option is found to
be the suitable alternative than the forebay. Area identified for surge tank
is with relatively flat and stable foundation on the bedrock.

7. Penstock Alignment
Penstock alignment lies in rock formation and the area is generally stable.

8. Powerhouse
The powerhouse location lies in stable geology with rock foundation on the
left bank of Iwa Khola. It is near the confluence of Shiva Khola and Iwa
Khola just upstream of the headworks of the Iwa Khola project. Some river
training works will be required on all three sides of the powerhouse.
