An unusual home

I’m Tim Theakstone and I live in a very unusual home. Most of my house is under the ground. The house
isn’t very big. It’s got a small kitchen at the front and next to that is a living room, with two comfortable sofas.
At the back of the house are the bathroom and the bedroom.

I live here with my wife, Jenny. She’s in the kitchen at the moment. I usually do the cooking, but Jenny’s
cooking today because I’m writing this blog.

One good thing about being underground is that the house is naturally warm. It uses solar energy to
heat water, and that works well. There’s always hot water. The only problem is that it’s quite dark
because there are only three windows at the front of the house.

Teaching children to love sport

A lot of children in Britain don’t do much sport. A new report on children and sport says
that most children love watching sport on TV, but most of them don’t like playing sport.
Langston School near Liverpool wants to change this situation. The head teacher, Paul
Scott, says, ‘We’re going to start school football teams for boys and girls next September.
And we’re going to have tennis and basketball lessons. We’re also going to have other
sports outside school, for example golf lessons at a golf club near the school.’ But what
about the children who are not very good at sport? Paul says ‘Of course, not every child is
good at football, but because we are going to have lots of different sports, each child can
find one that they really enjoy.’

The human spiderman

Alain Robert is one of the world’s greatest daredevils. He climbs tall buildings around the world.

He started climbing when he was twelve. His family lived on the 8th floor of a tall building. One day Alain forgot his keys, so he
climbed up the building and went in through the window.

It’s a dangerous hobby. He had a bad fall while he was climbing in Taipei, and hurt his arm quite seriously. In 2005 while he was
climbing in Texas, the American police arrested him. So why does he do it? It’s partly because he likes the feeling of danger. But he
also uses his climbs to make people think about world problems. In 2008, for example, while climbing, he wore a T-shirt with a
message about global warming.

5 Other scientists think that people will be more __________ in the future.

More and more people

Will there be food for everyone on our planet in the future? In the year 1800 the population of the world was about one billion. In
1950 there were about two and a half billion people on Earth, and by 2008 there were nearly seven billion. 134 million new babies are
born each year and lots of people now live to be very old. Scientists predict that by 2040 the population of the world will be nine
billion people. Some scientists think that if we don’t do something now to stop the population growing so fast, there won’t be food for
everyone in the future. But other scientists think that things will be fine because people will be more intelligent. They will learn to
grow more food, so there will be food for everyone.
