WE ALL MUST PLAY OUR PART
In May, Bill Elphinestone and I represented Prestwick South as
Commissioners at the 2010 General Assembly in Edinburgh. The
General Assembly is the Annual Business Meeting of the Church of
Scotland.
During the week, many discussions and debates took place about the
future of the Church of Scotland. This included the belief that the Church
of Scotland still has a duty to bring the ordinances of religion to the
people in every parish of Scotland through a territorial ministry.
Sometimes that can simply mean accepting the changes that come our
way with a genuine understanding and desire to go forward in faith. For
these days, it’s all too easy to criticise and complain that the Church no
longer functions the way we would like. Yes, we would all like our
Churches in Scotland to be overflowing with existing and new members,
but that sadly is not the case.
As we look to the summer, may I thank those members who have been
very supportive of Prestwick South in the past session. May their
commitment inspire others to do likewise!
Kenneth C. Elliott

SPRING GOLF OUTING
This year, the Spring Golf Outing was held at Ballochmyle
Golf Course on Tuesday 18th May 2010.
I’m sure most of you will remember that how nice the weather was on
that particular day. While most of you would have been relaxing in the
garden – doing a bit of weeding as a diversion, we were hacking our way
round the course, breaking sweat, discarding outer garments, out of puff
as we went down hill, then up hill and down again.
The first group was not among the prize winners – each of the following
groups were among the prizes; in fact one group had two prizes. Mind
you, William Wallace and Willie Main in the first group were finding
their way around without the aid of a ‘sat-nav’. It was then easy for the
others who just had to follow them and were more able to concentrate on
their scoring.
5
A consolation prize winner: Neil Inglis.
(A few others were close on his heels)
Alec Miller and James Yee were to be congratulated for organising all the
details for our outing and William Wallace for arranging the handicaps.
Alec ensured that suitable prizes all carefully wrapped were made
available for the winners – Bob Bell having donated some golf balls.
I use the word ‘suitable’, and leave everyone to conjure up their own
thoughts on the matter when I say that part of the 1st prize was a ‘Hip
Flask’ – did Alec have some premonition in his choice of prizes!!
Oh, one name seems to be missing – David Ferguson. Willie Main did
say to me during the first half ‘I think David is suffering’. David
confirmed afterwards that it wasn’t until the second half that he had a
par. Lucky him - I just struggled!!!

BIBLE STUDY
HUMOUR
LOT 'S WIFE
The Sunday School teacher was describing how Lot 's wife looked back
and turned into a pillar of salt, when little Jason interrupted, “My
Mummy looked back once while she was driving,” he announced
triumphantly, “and she turned into a telephone pole!”
GOOD SAMARITAN
A Sunday school teacher was telling her class the story of the Good
Samaritan. She asked the class, “If you saw a person lying on the
roadside, all wounded and bleeding, what would you do?” A
thoughtful little girl broke the hushed silence, “I think I'd throw up.”
HIGHER POWER
A Sunday school teacher said to her children, “We have been learning
how powerful kings and queens were in Bible times. But, there is a
Higher Power. Can anybody tell me what it is?”
One child blurted out, “ Aces!”
UNANSWERED PRAYER
The Minister’s 5 year-old daughter noticed that her father always paused
and bowed his head for a moment before starting his sermon. One day,
she asked him why.
“Well,” he began, proud that his daughter was so observant of his
messages. “I'm asking the Lord to help me preach a good sermon.”
“How come He doesn't answer it?” she asked.
9
UNTIMELY ANSWERED PRAYER
During the minister's prayer one Sunday, there was a loud whistle from
one of the back pews. Tommy’s mother was horrified. She pinched him
into silence and, after church, asked, “Tommy, whatever made you do
such a thing?”
Tommy answered soberly, “I asked God to teach me to whistle, and He
did!”

SAY A PRAYER
Little Johnny and his family were having Sunday dinner at his Grandmother's
house. Everyone was seated around the table as the food was being served.
When Little Johnny received his plate, he started eating right away.
“Johnny! Please wait until we say our prayer.” said his mother.
“I don't need to,” the boy replied.
“Of course, you do,” his mother insisted.. “We always say a prayer before
eating at our house.”
“That's at our house.” Johnny explained. “But this is Grandma's house and
she knows how to cook!”

ELDER’S VISIT
BOYS’ BRIGADE
It was with a tinge of sadness that I attended the Open Night at the Boys’
Brigade on Thursday 29 May 2010.
Willie Irvine and I have been the Visiting Elders for many years and
have enjoyed our visits to the organisation, the Coffee Mornings and
annual Open Nights and this was to be our last visit to the 4th Prestwick
Company.
Mr Sinclair was the Inspecting Officer and his wife presented the boys
with their richly deserved awards. Instead of the Scott Trophy for
Overall Contribution being presented to one boy as usual because it was
the last year special awards were given to Lance Corporal David Elliott
(13 years service), Andrew Johnston (12 years service), Sam Poole (11
years service), Andrew Kerr (8 years service) and Andrew Shaw (7 years
service). A surprise presentation was then made by David Elliott on
behalf of the boys to the leaders in appreciation of their work and
commitment for some considerable time.

4th PRESTWICK COMPANY
Our final annual Open night was held on Thursday 29th April when Mrs Ken
Sinclair, B.B. Captain of the 2nd Prestwick was the Inspecting Officer. Around
60 people gathered in the Hall including Parents, Relatives, Church Elders and
Members of the Congregation.
After the Rev. Kenneth Elliott had concluded the Opening Devotions Mr.
Sinclair inspected the boys. Mr Sinclair spoke individually to each boy about
their involvement in the 4th Prestwick.
Then the Junior and Company Section, under the command of Lance Corporal
David Elliott, performed their annual display of marching which included
‘snakes’, ‘figures of eight’ and ‘cris-cross’. All their practising over the past
few weeks certainly paid off.
Next the Anchor Boys’ entered the Hall and with pianist Sam Poole performed
the song ‘He’s Got The Whole World Wide In His Hands’. This was so good
the song was actually performed twice. (The Anchor Boys wish to express their
thanks to Sam Poole and Andrew Johnson for all their enthusiasm, help and
hard work especially with their song and marching.)
Then once again the Junior and Company Section entered the Hall. Under the
supervision of Andy Laughland Jim Meikle a Musical Quiz was held. With Sam
Poole once again on the piano ‘Name That Tune’ provided some wonderful
entertainment not only for the boys, but also the audience. On the completion of
the Quiz a ‘Tug Of War’ contest was held which also allowed some of the
parents to take part.
The final event of the evening was a Parachute Game for the Anchor Boys with
Liz Kerr in command. Again parents were invited to take part, which was a
thoroughly enjoyable way to conclude this part of the Open Night.
Then the whole Company gathered once again in the Hall for the presentation
of the Awards by Mrs. Kathryn Sinclair.

had shown to the 4th Prestwick over the years.
FRIENDS BADGES
Friend’s Badges were then presented to Katie McKail, Wilma Goodwin, Wendy
Lewis and Faye Hutton for their help with the Anchor Boys on Thursday
nights. A Friend’s Badge was also presented to Mrs Maureen Miller for all her
support of the 4th Prestwick B.B. through the years.
PRESENTATION
Mrs Kathryn Sinclair was then thanked for carrying out the presentation of
Awards and gifted a Bouquet of Flowers.
21
SURPRISE PRESENTATION
Mrs Liz Kerr then unexpectedly came forward on behalf of the boys to
introduce some special presentations. In recognition of all their hard work over
the years Mrs Noreen Meikle, Mr Jim Meikle, Mr Andy Laughland and the Rev
Kenneth Elliott were each given a Card and a Gift. Those were presented by
David Elliott.
The Rev Kenneth Elliott then thanks Liz Kerr for this wonderful surprise. Mr.
Elliott then went on to convey his own word of thanks to those that had been
instrumental in the success of the 4th Prestwick B.B. over the years.
Looking to the future Mr Sinclair spoke of the proposed amalgamation of the 4th
Prestwick and 2nd Prestwick with great enthusiasm. Mr. Sinclair saw this
amalgamation as a partnership that would only seek to enhance the strength of
the B.B. in Prestwick.
TEA or COFFEE
Following the closing devotions Tea or Coffee was served. Thanks to Eva
Dougall and Noreen Meikle for providing the refreshments.
NEXT SESSION
It is the intention that starting in September the Anchor Boys will meet each
Thursday night in Prestwick South, while the Junior Section and Company Boys
will meet in Kingcase Primary School.

MOONWALK
A number of years ago a very close friend of ours was
diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She has shown what a
resilient, strong and determined lady she is. Never
complains and keeps cheery throughout all her treatments.
She has inspired my husband & I to do the full (26.2 miles) Moonwalk
Marathon through the night in Edinburgh on 19th June. We started
training back in January and hope to complete the route in under 7 hours.
The Moonwalk is organised by the health charity Walk the Walk to raise
money and awareness. If you are interested in finding out more then

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO |
JOHN |
The fourth Gospel reveals the glory and majesty of God being brought visible
into the world. It emphasises the meaning of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, |
and is often referred to as the “spiritual Gospel”.
|
Echoing Genesis 1:1, John’s Gospel opens with the tremendous claim: “In the
beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was |
God.” This Gospel, with its longer discourses and emphasis on dramatic signs,
shows the truth made manifest in Jesus, and its importance for the world.
|
John & the Synoptics
John’s Gospel tells the same story of Jesus as the Synoptics, but in a different |
way and often with added detail. Unlike Marks’ Gospel, John does not conceal
Jesus identity but draws attention to him as a mediating agent between Heaven
and Earth. John also contains longer theological reflections in the form of |
discourses than the Synoptics do, although it does not include any parables or
the Lord’s Prayer. |
John’s Message |
Important themes in John include:
• Prologue (1:1-18) Jesus is identified as the Logos, the divine “Word”
that exists with God and comes into the world uniquely in Christ. The |
word that is God’s is not in Jesus as a verbal message: it comes fully
into human life. |
• Signs, chapters 2-12: John gives the purpose of his Gospel in 20:30-31,
explaining that in recording the signs, or miracles, that Jesus
|
performed, people would continue to believe in him as the Messiah.
• The Passion, chapters 13-20: recounting Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem,
arrest, trial, crucifixion, and resurrection. The Jesus John describes is |
in control of his destiny, not at the mercy of his enemies. There is no
secret as to Jesus’ purpose (19:36-20:29, 35) |
• Epilogue, chapter 21: this is thought by many to be a later addition as it
concerns further resurrection appearance and the fate of Peter. It was
perhaps added when there was concern over the death of John the
|
“beloved disciple”
|
Throughout his Gospel, John makes it clear that to believe Jesus is Christ
involves abiding in his “word” – his whole life and teaching – summed up by
his command to love (15:12, 13)
