Dear Parents,
WELCOME BACK TO SCHOOL! We are excited about what we have planned for your
child. We hope you find this curriculum guide helpful! It is designed to give you an
overview of what your child will be learning this month. We welcome your feedback as
you use the Parent Curriculum Guide throughout the year.
Reading at home: Students are encouraged to read each and every night. Make reading
time special by choosing a quiet comfortable spot or making a “reading area” just for this
purpose. When you are done reading together ask your child to tell you what happened
in the story. This way you can check to see if they really understood what they read. This
is also a good opportunity to attend to the print and figure out words and make meaning
of what they read. You may also want to talk about the pictures and how they came to
their conclusion about the story.
This month in writing: Teachers will be working with their students on “Launching The
Writing Workshop.” The children will be working on becoming authors! Teachers will
demonstrate how they take a piece of paper and draw what they remember. The teacher
will show students how to think about what they did first, next and last and illustrate
these pictures. Students will begin to label the pictures using the letters they know.
Writing at home: Have your child tell you something they did in school or at home.
They can practice writing by drawing a picture of all the things they did and labeling
things in their picture. For example, if they drew a picture of them playing ball at the
park, they can label “b” for ball and “p” for park, also “s” for slide.
This month in math: Students will be working on sorting and classifying objects into
categories by shape, size and color. They will look at the attributes and describe how
their objects were classified. They will use vocabulary such as “same,” “different,” and
“doesn’t belong.” They also will begin working on position and location of objects. They
