1 ArcGIS home use license

Aalto University has acquired university wide license for ArcGIS which includes also student
home use license. Using software is only allowed for educational, research and university ad-
ministration purposes. All commercial use is strictly forbidden.

2 Basic principles of home use license

Using home use license requires internet connection. Home use licenses are obtained from li-
cense server which is hosted by CSC. Previously used installation keys are not available since
January 1st 2014.

3 Quick steps how to use ArcGIS home use license

a) Download installation media from https://download.aalto.fi

b) Configure SSH tunnel for license server
c) Install ArcGIS to your computer
d) Configure license server settings for ArcGIS
e) Start using ArcGIS and remember to keep SSH tunnel running

4 License server information

License server address is license5.csc.fi and license server connection is using TCP ports 1758
and 1759. Access to license server is allowed only from FUNET network.

5 SSH tunneling

SSH tunneling can be established with several SSH clients. In these instructions PuTTY is used
to create connection to license server. More information about PuTTY can be found from Wikipe-
dia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PuTTY There is also a link to official PuTTY website where you
can download PuTTY to your computer. If you are using some other SSH client you have to fig-
ure out corresponding tunneling settings yourself.

6 Support

Due to wide range of home computers hardware and operation system versions Aalto University
IT can provide only very limited support for students' home computers.

8 Installing ArcGIS

Note that these instructions are made with version 10.2.1 but can be applied to later versions.

Download installation media from https://download.aalto.fi

Start installation from the downloaded .exe file (ArcGIS_Desktop_1021_139036.exe or similar).
After a while, it asks for extraction folder for temporary installation files – it doesn’t really matter
where you put these:

Keep the “Launch the setup program” ticked and click Close:

Wait for the setup to continue and choose default options (accept the EULA):

You will be asked for the license server settings after the installation process finished. These
settings can also be changed afterwards with ArcGIS Administrator from the Windows Start Pro-
grams menu.

Select Advanced (ArcInfo) Concurrent Use (you can also select Standard or Basic if you only
need those features). Define license manager 1758@localhost. This setting with SSH tunnel
configured with instructions on page 2 forwards license requests to CSC license server.

You can delete the temporary installation files extracted at the beginning of page 3. Remember
to establish SSH connection before launching ArcGIS. Also remember to check that SSH tunnel-
ing settings are in place.
