Welcome!
Can’t decide how to open a
show or approach a table?
Looking for a complete list of
killer openers for any type of
magic show? You’ve come to
the right place.

5
We’ve got the ultimate list of 40 Openers for
you, including:

Card Openers: Non-Card Openers: Stand-Up/Stage Openers

 Self-Working Automatic  Single-Phase
Deck Openers Openers - Non-Card
 One Phase Openers -  Multi-Phase Openers
Unprepared & Easy - Non-Card
 One Phase Openers -
Some Skill Required
 Multi-Phase Openers 6

But first, what makes a successful opener?

7
A successful opener:
 happens quickly
 is direct and easy to understand
 astounds your audience to capture
their interest
 makes people open to your magic -
and excited to see it
8
Self-Working Automatic
Deck Openers

9
Let‟s start with Self-Working Automatic
Deck Openers. These are:
 Great for a Cold Audience
 Require no sleight of hand
 Offer you low-stress options that get
powerful responses

10
1. Ultra-Mental/Invisible Deck

Using absolutely no sleight of hand, a

thought-of card is discovered to be the
only reversed card in the deck!
Presentation ideas are endless, so it‟s
a great effect to „hook‟ your audience.

11
2. Rising Cards

A chosen card magically rises

out of the deck - quick, visual
and astonishing!

12
3. Brainwave Deck

Your spectator thinks of any card.

When you remove the cards from the
case, it is the ONLY face-up card in an
otherwise face-down deck. As a bonus,
you reveal that their thought-of card
has a different-colored back!

13
4. Pop-Eyed Popper Deck

Use this deck to successfully force a

card on your spectator every time.
Then reveal their card using your
favorite direct method!

14
Better Than The Invisible Deck?!!
Second Sight Fits In Your Pocket…
...And Opens Strong on the Largest Stage!

Need an effect that will be well received in a close-up setting, or in front of a larger crowd, ready for
any audience? Especially for family and friends, who are often the toughest audiences you‟ll have?

We recently opened our Conjuror Community vault to release one of our all-time favourite openers…
It‟s so strong, it competes with the legendary Invisible Deck in terms of effect, ease of performance
and versatility!

It‟s even easier, so you can focus on your audience - not math!

Even cleaner, so you can actually let your audience shuffle the cards...

Even stronger, so you can astonish the most skeptical audiences, and

More visual, so you know they‟ll be just as amazed in the very back row!

If you‟re looking for an unbeatable opener, it doesn‟t get better than Second Sight.

Single-Phase Card
Openers - Unprepared &
Easy

16
Let‟s move on to Single-Phase Card
Openers that are unprepared and easy
to do. These miracles:
 Allow audience connection
 Require no setup or extra deck
 Can be done impromptu
 Can be done with a borrowed deck

17
5. Fast Mental Divination
Have a spectator silently repeat the name
of her card to herself over and over again…
As she does, begin to nod your head and
repeat the name of her card over and over
again out loud.

This shockingly effective trick delivers the

experience to the spectator that you have
heard her thoughts and can sync up with
them magically. With an ordinary deck and
a simple force, it‟s very difficult to beat this
trick for an impromptu opener.
18
6. Force and Reveal

There‟s no faster way to get to a surprise

that's strong enough to open for even the
most disinterested audience, including
audiences you‟ll meet when you perform on
television.

They pick a card… and you reveal it, in the

most surprising/shocking way you possibly
can!
19
7. Think Stop
The spectator is asked simply to think the
word „Stop‟ when he sees his card, and you
are able to feel the moment his thought
occurs.

Easy to do and powerful, this is another

personal, direct, mental divination that has
the power to break through modern
audience „attention barriers‟ and create
immediate interest in your magic. 20
Single-Phase Card Openers
- Some Skill Required

21
These Single-Phase Card Openers
require some sleight-of-hand skill, but
allow:
 More visual effects
 Card to location effects
 A more startled audience

22
8. Transformation
Magically transform an incorrect card into
the spectator‟s selection. Usually it‟s best if
this happens face down in the spectator‟s
hands.

When performed directly, a transformation

of this sort has the power to warm up an
entire room. And you can use any „switch‟
you want to make it happen.
23
9. Color Change

With - or even better, without - a selection,

this is the single fastest card effect you can
perform... and it makes for an eye-catching
opener for any small audience.

24
10. Quick Reversal

Have a card selected and use any

„secret reverse‟ technique to make the
card turn over in the pack. For best
results, we suggest you create the
„magic‟ while the deck is in your
spectator‟s hands!

25
11. Card to Pocket
Your spectator‟s chosen card disappears
from the deck and ends up in your pocket -
an effect that delights audiences and
compels even the most skeptical viewers to
pay attention. Just like the effect above,
you‟ll get the strongest results if the pack is
in your spectator‟s hands when you create
the „magic moment‟.

26
11. Card to Pocket

As an added benefit, your audience

can immediately check the deck after
you produce the card from your pocket.
This creates immediate Active
Audience Engagement - and lays the
groundwork for all your card miracles to
come.
27
12. Coughing Up Cards

Edgy, in your face, and cannot be

ignored. Look at your spectators after
you perform this bold miracle and you‟ll
see the magic written all over their
faces.

28
13. Floating Card

When people see the „Helicopter Card‟,

it‟s a sure bet you‟ll have their attention
and interest for whatever trick you
choose to do next!

29
Multi-Phase Card Openers

30
Looking to perform longer routines? These Multi-Phase Card
Openers come with a first phase opener „built-in‟. These
routines:
 Have a quick opening phase to get attention
 Offer follow-up phases that build excitement
 Let you warm up the coldest audiences as you get any
robust set on its feet

31
14. Chicago Opener

Phase One: The back of your

spectator‟s freely selected card
magically changes color, appearing in
the middle of the deck as you spread
through the cards.

32
14. Chicago Opener
Phase Two: You place their selection
in their hand and have a second card
chosen and returned to the deck. Your
audience will be shocked and amazed
to learn that the original selection has
transformed into the second selection
all while your spectator was holding
the cards. 33
14. Chicago Opener

“Chicago Opener” is one of the strongest

close-up card openers - because the first
effect is SO surprising, and the second
effect escalates the magic quickly,
engages the audience actively, and gets
the maximum leverage you could ever
hope for by adding just one additional card
to the pack.
34
15. Card to Pocket
Win over the coldest audience by
turning the single-phase card to pocket
effect into a 2, 3 or 4 stage routine.
When presented in a way that
encourages your spectators to try and
watch for the „secret moment‟, this trick
builds interest and engagement under
challenge conditions. 35
16. Ambitious Card
A selected card is replaced in the middle
of the deck and magically rises to the top.
It happens so fast the audience will want
to see it again - you willingly oblige. The
Ambitious Card can play as an opener if
you make the first phase direct and
surprising. If you plan to use a „signed
card‟ in your routine, get to the first effect
quickly, and save the signature for later! 36
Single-Phase Non-Card
Openers

37
Want to switch it up and ditch the cards?

Try some of these Single-Phase Non-Card Openers. They:

 Are quick and grab attention
 Can use items around you
 Eliminate the „friction‟ playing cards can sometimes
arouse in the coldest audiences.

Choose one or two of these great starters, and

you‟ll always be ready to open, even when the
crowd isn‟t „ready‟ for magic!
38
17. Fire Wallet

You open your wallet and real fire

appears inside! This is an all-time
favorite among close-up
professionals, because no practical
trick surprises an audience or gets
their attention faster.

39
18. Flash Paper Production
The production of any object using Flash
Paper works just as well as the Fire Wallet. It
doesn‟t get much more surprising and magical
than this! In a pinch, you can skip the
production, and just light the flash paper. This
may sound crazy, but it gets an audience's
attention - and in the first moments of a
strolling close-up performance, that‟s the most
important thing you‟ll need! 40
19. Flash Cash

Anytime you transform dollar bills into

hundreds, or blank paper into real
money, you‟ve got an effect you can
rely on to interest EVERY audience.
There are many methods available,
and ANY one of them can open
strong!
41
20. Animated Fork or Straw

Impossible animations draw so much

attention, you don‟t even have to ask
your audience to watch. You can
actually perform this one for
YOURSELF. Before you know it, you‟ll
soon have open, interested audiences
who want to know what just happened!
42
21. Floating Dollar
Any object - especially currency - floating
in mid-air will draw the attention of
everyone around you, no matter what they
are doing. You can present this directly or,
as with the animated straw above, simply
perform it for yourself. You‟ll be shocked
at how quickly interest in your magic
develops.
43
22. Torn and Restored Paper Napkin

Performed quickly with

confidence, this effect has the
power to shock and surprise -
and that‟s just what you need to
open in close-up!

44
23. Coin Production

The bigger the coin, the more

effective an opener. Use a Silver
Dollar, and any method makes a great
stand-alone opener - or a lead-in for
another great trick using coins!

45
24. Self-Tying Shoelaces
If you‟ve ever seen this trick, you know
how powerful it can be. Ask anyone to
look down - and this trick actually
opens the show for you!

Audiences will definitely be open to

seeing more of your magic if you start
with this miracle!
46
25. Pen Through Dollar Bill

This is the easiest, most surprising and

magical version of the „torn and restored‟
effect you can perform, and it‟s perfectly
paced to make an incredible opener.
Consider one of the „Pen Through
Anything‟ props you can easily find, for a
practical, powerful method you will use all
the time!
47
26. Vanishing Fork or Knife

Seated at a table, this is one of the

most surprising effects you can do
when you‟re asked to perform by your
dinner companions. We use it all the
time because it‟s easy, and NEVER
fails to get a powerful response.

48
Multi-Phase Non-Card
Openers

49
While these routines can be positioned
anywhere in your show, the following
Multi-Phase Non-Card Openers are

“ perfect ‘audience warmers’ - if you

take special care to perform the first
phase as directly as possible.
27. Metal Bending

This effect can be played as a full routine

or stand-alone miracle. Bending a spoon,
fork or other metal object with your mind is
always a winner. Avoid a long build up -
and you can use virtually ANY metal-
bending effect to arouse attention and
interest.

51
28. Linking Rubber Bands

Also known as the Crazy

Man‟s Handcuffs, this effect is
powerful enough to get the
interest of any audience by the
very first phase.

52
29. Salt Vanish
Whether you perform this close-up using a
Thumb Tip or onstage using a „Salt Pour
Gimmick‟, this effect creates interest from
the beginning and achieves a very
satisfying payoff...all in under 30 seconds.

And if you want, you can make the salt re-

appear to create a striking follow-up
immediately - or even later in the show! 53
30. Quick Transformation

Put on a Thumb Tip and try transforming

the salt (or silk) into a coin, a ball or ANY
other object. This surprises the audience,
and creates a powerful first effect.

54
30. Quick Transformation

For example, we love to perform the

„sponge balls‟. We often like to pour table
salt into our fist, and shock the audience
by transforming that salt into one, or even
two, sponge balls. It‟s the perfect way to
open by transforming an ordinary object
into the props you‟ll use for your routine!
55
31. Ninja Rings

These micro-sized Chinese linking

rings are perfect for gathering attention
and interest in low light situations, or at
large events where the audience
wouldn‟t be able to hear you speak, no
matter how hard they tried.

56
32. Sponge Balls or Paper Napkin Routines

These classic props work VERY well as

openers. Either produce the first ball or simply
perform the first phase of the effect without
delay to achieve the necessary Opening Impact.

You‟ll gain enough interest to propel your routine

forward - and by the end of your sponge ball
routine, the audience will be yours.
57
33. Coins Across
This classic can be performed with an
in-depth presentation or „premise‟. To
use it as a strong opener, you‟ll find the
effect play very well without any extra
„presentation‟. Just show the coins in
one hand and make the first one fly
across without any discussion - and
your audience will warm right up!!
58
34. Spellbound
A multi-phase, colour-changing coin
routine. Any opener involving currency will
interest your audience, but since this
routine allows you to complete the first
phase quickly, and is full of amazing
magical moments, this routine makes the
perfect opener to prepare your audience for
the magic to come!
59
Stand-Up/Stage Openers

60
In front of a larger audience, it‟s even
more important to win the crowd quickly.
Your Stand-Up or Stage openers need
to be quick, powerful and visual like any
of the ones we‟ve included here.

61
35. Cut and Restored Rope Routines

Multi-stage visual rope routines play

well as openers because you can
perform the first phase quickly, and get
a powerful, surprising effect that warms
up a cold stand-up audience fast.

62
36. Silk Vanish

For any age, the Vanish, Reappearance

and Re-Vanish of a silk handkerchief is
as clear, mesmerizing and magical as a
trick can be. It doesn‟t matter what
language your audience speaks or
where you are in the world. This looks
like real magic.
63
37. D’lite

If you‟re looking for an opener for a

poorly lit room or an extremely loud
event, D‟lite may earn a powerful place
in your repertoire. Lights magically
appearing from anywhere can create
interest under any circumstances.

64
38. Torn and Restored Newspaper

We recommend this effect as one of

the all-time strongest stand-up or
stage openers ever developed. It‟s
visual, you can see it in the largest
room and it lets you create a miracle in
under 30 seconds.

65
39. Bird Production
When performing for a large
audience onstage, producing a
bird from thin air is one of the
best ways to open up the
crowd, capture their interest
and excite them about the show
to follow. 66
40. Linking Rings

One of the oldest tricks in the book -

and audiences still love it to this day.
So long as you get through the first
phase of what is most probably a
longer routine, the classic Linking
Rings can make for an opener that
achieves your Strategic Objective
every time.
67
No matter what you choose, if you choose something from
this list, you‟ll have an opener that gets your audience's
attention, arouses their interest and prepares them for the
the magic to come.

Enjoy! We KNOW your

audiences will!
