Performance Based Assessment

The definition of performance-based assessments varies greatly depending on

author, disciple, publication, and intended audience (Palm, 2008). In general, a
performance-based assessment measures students' ability to apply the skills and
knowledge learned from a unit or units of study. Typically, the task challenges students
to use their higher-order thinking skills to create a product or complete a process
(Chun, 2010). The purpose of performance assessment is to evaluate the actual process
of doing an object of learning. Students are expected to be able to apply knowledge
learnt in class to solve problems in the task. Apart from that, students may need to use
their thinking skill in order to complete the task. Teachers as evaluators will be able to
judge the quality of their students' abilities, witness their students' progress and
facilitate them to a higher level of conceptual and procedural knowledge (Slater, n.d.)
during which the task is conducted.

Performance based assessment is realistically better than of the paper and pencil
test because this helps them reflect and evaluate themselves through their experiences.
It can also make them dive deeper into their learning and the knowledge they have
gained through discussions and lessons will be put to test and let them apply it to real-
life. This is most likely where the students show their creativity and flexibility in
applying their learning.

I’ve learned that being a future teacher, there is a need to create more
performance-based assessments to the learners for it helps them grow and develop their
thinking skills. Being a teacher isn’t an easy feat especially when it comes to evaluating
the learners. A teacher should be able to make a type of assessment where it will make
them participate fully and where they can use their different skills so it will not be as
boring as the paper and pencil test because these type of assessment can stimulate them
holistically and make them love the learning process more. I’ve also learned that I will
need to provide my future students activities where it will not only promote academic
excellence but also help them become more of a “person” by giving them lessons which
will be integrated with human values.

Identifying the meaning of “Learning by doing” is vital to students for life

experience is the best teacher. This is one of the challenges of being a teacher, to be able
to give them a lesson which they will not only learn the basic knowledge but also apply
it creatively in real-life situations.
