AMIGO Link
Application overview

AMIGO Link is the brand new DMG solution for Amigo II emergency telephones remote control
and monitoring.
With this application you can register and manage your installations and telephones, collect
service calls (such as 72 hours self test and low battery calls as imposed by EN 81-28
European norm), remotely control your devices configuration and much more.
In this guide we will walk through the main steps required for application installation and start
up, system management and application functionalities.
DMG AMIGO Link is an application platform consisting of three different product versions:
• DMG AMIGO Link Standard Edition.
The standard version of the product, is the solution aimed at lift installation companies
who want to manage their own devices from their desks just by a click. The application
provides service calls collection function along with complete control over Amigo II self
test, remote programming and control functionalities.
• DMG AMIGO Link Enterprise Edition,
This is a more functional version of the Standard Edition, empowered by an embedded
Web platform which provides the application with the possibility to perform like a
dedicated Web Server for remote data access and monitoring. This solution is aimed at
service provider companies or lift components distributors who wants to provide
customers with a powerful yet simple telephones maintenance service.
All service calls are collected and logged to database by the Server which also stores all
the data about installations, telephones and events. All the amount of data and
functionalities are available for fast access by web clients.
• DMG AMIGO Link Client,
This is the DMG web client application developed to communicate and exchange data
with a AMIGO Link Enterprise Edition Web Server.
It provides all the functionalities to fetch, manage, modify and register data physically
stored by the server. Through this solution, lift companies can manage all their
emergency telephones by just one click, with no money effort for keeping an ‘always on’
computer and telephone line.

1.2 - Installation

To install DMG AMIGO Link SE and EE, browse to the installation files folder on your
installation media and run “Setup.exe”.
At start up the installer will automatically check if there is an instance of Microsoft .NET
Framework 2.0 installed on your machine; if not, a screen will be displayed asking you to install
2
the product. Accept the EULA (End User Licence Agreement) and click next.
At the end of the prerequisite installation, the AMIGO Link setup will start.
It is a very easy process and you just need to use the next button to proceed in the installation
process as it will automatically copy files to your programs folder. No user interaction or
configuration is needed.
At the end of this process a window will be shown asking you to select a language. At this time
the DMG Database is being installed and configured on your system. To start database
installation, choose your language (English is the default) and click next. Installer will calculate
system requirements and will show you a screen indicating whether your system meets them or
not. If everything is fine just click next to start DMG database installation. The DMG database is
configured over an instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. Installer will
automatically configure and install a dedicated local instance of the product with no need of user
interaction. However, due to the complexity of this application, setup will require several minutes
to complete its task. Do not shout down, reboot or kill the installer during the setup operation.
In case of troubles with the installation, please refer to section Known issues and
troubleshooting (§ 5) of this guide.

2 – First start configration

2.1 - Enterprise Edition configuration

1. Install all your modems3 using vendor’s installation media and turn them on.
2. Start the application (Installer automatically creates shortcuts on the desktop and in the
programs menu under the Dmg folder). The configuration wizard will be shown.
3. Select the application language (English is the default) and click next.
4. You will be asked to configure the TCP port over which the server listens for incoming
clients requests.
By default AMIGO Link EE listens on port 38725, but you can change this value to
match your network configuration needs.
In order to allow your clients to connect to your system you will have to provide all of
them with your connection parameters; they will need your server’s IP address (or DNS if
you have one) and the port you configured for it. You can also reconfigure the port from
within the application (see § 4.5).
5. On the same screen you have the possibility to enable or disable the automatic redial
option. Turning it on, you will configure AMIGO Link to automatically call telephones
when their self test period (24, 48, 72 hours) elapses without receiving a service call from
device. In this case, system can check if device is in some critical state or there was just
a temporary problem (All modems busy for example) before firing an alarm.
Disabling this option, a self test missing event will be automatically recorded every time a
self test period expires. You can call telephones selectively if you want, using the
apposite button on the telephone window (see § 4.3).
6. On the next screen you will be asked to choose a password for your Administrator
account. It is possible to change it later from within the application (see § 4.6).
It is very important that you choose a strong password.
Through the “Administrator” built in account it is possible to access and modify all of the
data belonging to all of the clients registered with your services. Don’t distribute your
password !

At this point the application is configured and application can start. If you don’t complete the

3 - Amigo II and AMIGO Link communication system

The communication between Amigo II telephone and AMIGO Link is based upon the DMG
HYBRID protocol. DMG HYBRID must be configured as the service protocol on all the Amigo II
telephones that will be connected to a DMG AMIGO Link application. This protocol implements
a separation between emergency and service functionalities. When an alarm button is pressed
in the installation, an emergency call is originated by the telephone. This call will be directed to
some rescue service in voice mode to allow conversation between the lift and the service
station; on the other hand, when a service call is originated (72 h self test, low battery and so
on) this will be directed, in data mode, to the service facility hosting DMG AMIGO Link
Application.
AMIGO Link supports four digits long identity numbers (ID number). Only numerical values are
admitted so, valid identity numbers spans from “0000” to “9999” thus providing each DMG
AMIGO Link instance with the possibility to monitor 10000 remote telephones.
Telephone ID numbers MUST be unique inside AMIGO Link database; for this reason, it
is highly recommended to have the telephone identifier assigned by AMIGO Link during
telephone registration and programmed to the Amigo II device only after registration is
successfully completed.
Please refer to section 4.3 for detailed informations about telephones registration process.

The “MODEMS STATUS” box shows you the status of your devices. It is important to monitor
sometimes this information to be sure that system is properly working. A modem can be
reported in five different states: “Wait for call”, “Undefined”, “Reset”, “Dialing” and “Receiving”.
When in “Wait for Call”, the device is ready to process incoming calls. The “Dialing” and
“receiving” states meaning is straightforward. When a device remains for too long in “Reset” or
“Undefined” status it means that modem has hang up and needs to be restarted. It is a very rare
event but may happen in some circumstances. In this case you can restart the device using the
controls in the top of the modem control panel.
Figure 2 shows a snapshot of the controls and options associated with modems. You can chose
the modem to be configured or restarted by opening the list in the top left corner of the panel.
The restart button can be used to reset the selected device only, while the detect button
rescans all serial ports searching for connected devices. Use this button to perform a “plug and
play” installation of new modems while application runs.

For each modem you can specify the type of network the device is connected to and the
modem’s telephone number. These two settings are very important because they help system
in choosing the most appropriate modem to perform calls to remote telephones when there are
self test calls missing and also suggests the most appropriate telephone number to be called by

telephones when recording a new one. Every time a new telephone is registered for operation
with the AMIGO Link services, the type of connection it uses must be specified. A telephone
can call system through an analogical PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) line or a
GSM mobile network through a GSM gateway (such as the DMG ETSGSM module). Since
phone calls are much cheaper when performed from GSM to GSM or PSTN to PSTN, directing
the calls on the appropriate device (if there are both a PSTN and a GSM modem installed)
results in a much more cost efficient solution for the user (and also for the customer when
talking about the Enterprise Edition of the application). If there are more than one modem
installed for a specific connection type, system will suggest numbers to be called, among those
available, on a random bases to balance workload.

4.2 - Installations window

In order to record a telephone in the system and start operations, users must first of all record
an installation. The installation is the logical representation of the physical installation (the lift)
and, for this reason, it stores ‘geographical’ information that are necessary to localize a
telephone.
Every installation requires an installation ID to be chosen in order to univocally identify the lift
among those recorded in the database.
All other information are optional. However we suggest filling up as many fields as possible in
order to identify more efficiently the installations when needed.

To record a new telephone you have to specify the following parameters:
1. Installation ID. Telephones are binded to installations (lifts) through the Installation ID
(Installation serial number field in the ‘Telephones’ window). You can register as many
telephones you want on each installation but, we strongly recommend to keep a logical
structure, reflecting the real one, for your recordings, since installations give geographical
information on where the telephone is physically installed.

Provide the identifier of the installation you want to register your

2. Telephone ID. The telephone identifier can be obtained using the apposite button.
System will automatically calculate the next available ID from database. We strongly
recommend to read section 3 for details about Amigo II communication protocol. The ID

AMIGO Link
is a four number string spanning from “0000” to “9999”. Identifiers shorter or longer than
four digits, as well as alphanumeric are not admitted. ID Number must be unique. It is
impossible to record a telephone using an ID already present in the database. Telephone
ID is transmitted by Amigo II during a service call to identify its self. Duplicate IDs would
make impossible for system to discriminate the telephone identity during a service call.
For this reason we strongly recommend to have the ID assigned by system and
physically programmed to the Amigo II device only after the registration process has
completed successfully.
3. Self test period. Specifies whether the telephone makes: 24 h, 48 h, 72 h or no self test
calls and must equal the corresponding option configured onto device. This parameter is
critical since it is used by system to decide whether a telephone has not originated the
self test call thus creating the suspect of some malfunctioning. When this happens,
telephone is automatically called by system if the autodial option is enabled to verify
whether the suspect is well-founded or not before raising an alarm; you can configure
autodial option opening the configuration panel from the “Tools” menu item. If autodial is
not enabled, an heart beat missing event will be recorded every time the self test period
expires. You can check if a telephone is alive using the apposite button in the
Telephones window toolbar.
4. Device telephone number. For the purpose of calling the telephone in case of necessity
you are required to provide the Amigo II telephone number. Providing a wrong number
you will prevent system from verifying telephone aliveness, thus creating the conditions
for false alarms. Do not mistake this parameter.
5. Connected to. Allows you to specify whether the telephone forwards calls through a
PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) analog line or a GSM gateway (such as
DMG ETSGSM). This a money saving feature offered by AMIGO Link. When modems
are correctly configured (see § 4.1), system will automatically suggest you (and your
clients) the most appropriate Service number, among those available in AMIGO Link
system, in order to minimize the price per call for you and your clients and balance the
workload of the modems4.

By means of the View advanced options button, you can show or hide all optional data relative
to telephone configuration that are not relevant for telephone registration and management.

4
It is well known that GSM to PSTN calls are much more expensive than GSM to GSM and PSTN to PSTN ones. For this
reason Amigo Link automatically chooses the best solution for you among those available.

To start navigate the events associated with your telephones, you must first of all fetch them
from database. The search engine works exclusively on a time filter. This means that once a
specific day is chosen from the calendar, application will fetch all events of all your telephones
collected from the chosen day till present.
The controls in the left bottom panel gives the ability to customize the view of events. You can
filter by telephone identifier, date, event type and so on.
There are five types of events currently collected by AMIGO Link; they are:
1. Heart beat calls. These are the 24, 48 or 72 hours self test calls. Sometimes, this events
are recorded by system after a telephone was called because of a self test missing. Self
test missing might be reported not only because of telephones malfunctioning but also for

Pagina

AMIGO Link
temporary problems on networks or modem’s telephone line busy. In these cases, the
Heart beat events are marked with a comment indicating that telephone was found to be
alive by a system call rather than a self test one. Heart beat events are marked with
status ‘Info’ indicating that they are not emergency and no actions are required.
2. Heart beat missing. These are the highest priority alerts. They are recorded by system
after the self test period of a telephone expired without heart beats. When this happens,
system tries to call telephone at the number recorded in the database; if telephone is
alive, the event will be recorded as an heart beat and no alarm will be raised, in the
opposite case an heart beat missing event will be recorded and highlighted in red in the
events table.
3. Low battery calls. These events are caused by service calls originated to signal that
Amigo II telephone measured a voltage less than 10 Volt between the main power supply
leads for a period of at least 10 minutes (normal voltage level is 12 Volt). This are high
priority alerts requiring urgent attention; thus are highlighted in red.
4. Battery restored calls. These calls are originated when power supply voltage returns on
the normal 12 Volt level, after a voltage drop was detected and a consequent Low battery
call was originated. This calls are for the purpose of informing that alarm ended after
some transitive problem.
5. No reply to system call events. These kind of events are recorded when you manually
call telephone using the apposite function available in the telephones window obtaining
no reply from telephone.

You can edit your records by right clicking on the one you want to modify. You can edit the
comment associated with the event or change event’s status. The status is indicated as
being ‘Pending’ when a new emergency is raised indicating that situation requires immediate
action. You can change the status to ‘Managed’ when situation has been solved to keep a
clearer trace of your situation.

4.5 - Server control window (Enterprise Edition only)

The server control window helps administrator in monitoring both web and local system activity.
The console gives some basic information about system status such as CPU, memory and
network load. Furthermore you can watch the size of your database file. DMG database size is
upper-limited to 4 Giga Bytes due to the constraint imposed by the Express Edition of Microsoft
Sql Server. This not really a relevant limit; 4 GB is a well beyond the needs database size.
In lower left corner you can see how many clients are currently connected to your server and
who they are.
Finally you have two configurable options. You can change the value of the TCP port the server
listens on. Remember that if you change this parameter, all your clients will have to reconfigure
their applications in order to connect to your system.

files) and deleted from database when they become “old”. This is necessary to keep database
small in size and speedy. You can change the rules associated with data logging by opening the
dedicated configuration console through the button on server console or through the Tools
menu item.
Finally, you have a complete log of all operations going on at lower levels of application such as
service requests to database, web access requests, background operations such as data
logging and errors. Errors are frequently reported in this window “as they are”. It means that no
“user friendly” filter is applied on how they are written to the screen. This choice was made to
have a “technical” view of system behavior that may help DMG in providing assistance to
customers.
All the events reported by the application, including those you can see from server and modem
consoles are written to file to keep trace of operations.
You can find this logs in the Dmg AMIGO Link EE program folder if you need them for
consultancy or for problem reporting to DMG assistance service.
Log files can become very large! You can periodically delete them if you have disk space
problems.

4.6 Accounts window (Enterprise Edition only)

The accounts window gives you the possibility to manage your customer credentials. You can
record, modify and delete accounts from here. The account is the passport you provide to your
customers for access on your system. Every single data in Dmg AMIGO Link is binded to an
account. An installation requires an account to be recorded on, while a telephone requires an
installation to be recorded, thus, all telephones and associated events are binded to the same
account of the installation they belong to. The result is that AMIGO Link EE implements a built-
in authorization mechanism over data. Every customer, connected to your server through a web
client, can exclusively view and change data belonging to his or her account. Furthermore,
every installation and telephone recorded through the client, is automatically binded to the
account the user logged with. The only exception to this rule is the built-in “Administrator”
account. This is your account. When server starts, you are automatically logged in with this
identity. As administrator you have the rights to view, modify and delete all data belonging to all
your customers. For this reason, at application first start (see § 2) choose your password wisely
and do not distribute it. You can also log onto your system through the web client using your
account.

5 - Known issues and troubleshooting

In this section we will discuss some known problems with the application and provide the
relative solution, demanding to Dmg customers service for all other problems not covered here.

5.1 - Installation troubleshooting

• 2103 error during installation.

Error 2103 is a Windows Installer error that may be prompted during installation when the
setup program can’t find some system information it requires. This error was seldom
reported during AMIGO Link installation and is typically solvable through a small
Windows update that is distributed along with Dmg AMIGO Link.
To install the update browse to the “Tools” directory in you Dmg AMIGO Link Installation

• Installation on Windows Xp Service Pack 3.
There is a well known compatibility issue between this version of Windows and Microsoft
SQL Server 2005 Express that is distributed and installed along with Dmg AMIGO Link.
During installation, the SQL Server tries to update a Windows component called “MSXML
6.0”. In the Service Pack 3 version of Windows XP this component is protected by
operative system and installation of SQL Server fails when trying to update it. To
workaround this problem you will have to perform some easy system configuration before
installing Dmg AMIGO Link.
First of all close all Microsoft Office applications; Browse to the “Tools” directory in you
Dmg AMIGO Link Installation media and open the “Windows installer clean-up” folder.
Launch the “msicuu2.exe” file and follow the setup steps.
