Assignment # 1
Spring 2017 (EE-4th)
Q.1: A point is chosen at random in the quadrilateral in Figure. What is the sample space?

Q.2: A bag contain biscuit pack of three different flavors lemon, chocolate and strawberry. Ali
wants to eat the lemon biscuit as lemon is his favorite, but he cannot look into the bag. So he
randomly picks the packet from bag, If selected one is not lemon flavor he removes it from bag
and continue to pick up until he get lemon biscuit. What is sample space? How many events can
be made using this sample space?
Q.3: Find the sample space for the experiment of tossing a coin repeatedly until the first head
appears.

Q.4: Consider rolling a six-sided die. Let A be the set of outcomes where the roll is an odd
number. Let B be the set of outcomes where the roll is less than 4 Calculate and compare the sets
on both sides of De-Morgan's laws

Q.5: Out of the students in a class, 60% are soft drink lovers, 70% love tea, and 40% fall into
both categories. Determine the probability that a randomly selected student is neither like soft
drink nor tea.

Q.6: Consider testing batteries coming off an assembly line one by one until one having a
voltage within prescribed limits is found. The simple events are E1= {S}, E2= {FS}, E3= {FFS}
and so on .Suppose the probability of any particular battery being satisfactory is 0.99. All Ei are
disjoints. Write down complete sample space and prove that P (sample space) =1.

Q.7: Consider three events A, B and C with following properties.

P (A) =1/4, P (B) = 1/6, P (C) = 1/4
P (AՈB) = P (BՈC) = P (AՈC) = 1/9
P (AՈBՈC) = 1/13
Let D = P (AUBUC) c, find P (D). Do the events A, B and C constitute the sample space? Briefly
