Assessment:
In-class exercises will be conducted during lectures. The exercises will provide some hand-on
experiences in designing or optimizing chemical processes or process equipment.
Lecture Schedule:
Week Subject
1 Introduction of Process Design, Synthesis and Integration
2-5 Flowsheet development
- The hierarchy of chemical process design
- Input information and Batch vs Continuous
- Input-Output Structure of a process flowsheet
- Recycle Structure of a process flowsheet
* Lectures might be re-scheduled for better matching with the design projects
Tutorial Projects:
The objective of the tutorial projects is to provide you practical experiences in developing a
process flowsheet using computer programs such as Excel and Aspen+, and to perform an
energy integration study of the designed flowsheet. You will learn and experience of data
collection, flowsheet development, equipment selection, costing, energy integration and design
optimization, etc. A project team of 2 students will be working together on one project
consists of 3 working sessions including: 1) Flowsheet Development using Excel; 2) Flowsheet
Simulation with Aspen+; 3) Energy Integration. Tutorials will be given at the first week of
each session. Barn A is reserved during the lab sessions with the supports from our teaching
assistants.
