Liner Hanger Systems - Liner Packers Rev. 0

LX Liner Packer
Class Codes: 1680, 1681, 1687, 1688

Description/Application:

The LX Liner Top packer is a compression set integral liner top packer
designed to be run with a liner hanger assembly and provide a dependable
seal at the liner top after being set. This durable packer is designed to
withstand most well conditions and can be configured with various features to
meet the well environment and service applications required. The LX packer is
suitable for medium to high pressure applications.

The LX packer includes numerous features designed to enhance setting load

transfer to the packoff during the setting process by reduction of friction and
drag between the setting sleeve and inner barrel.

The LX Liner packer can be utilized with any of the TIW mechanical set,
hydraulic set or rotating type liner hangers and can be configured to be run
with any of the TIW family of liner setting tools.

The standard configuration for the LX Packer includes a Tie-Back Receptacle,

C-Clutch, RPOB (retrievable packoff bushing) Profile, and the TIW Gold Seal
Ramp Packoff Element.

The standard elastomer is HSN, but can be configured with Aflas or Viton as
required to meet well environment and temperature requirements.

The packer can also be configured with the new EEL packoff for higher
pressure capability. The EEL packoff is available for most common sizes and
requires a premium charge. The EEL Packoff must be specified at time of
order. The EEL and Ramp Packoff can not be exchanged as there are length
and dimensional differences.

All other configurations are classified as non standard and would included
variations such as, with DPOB (drillable packoff bushing), with out C-Clutch,
with RWD profiles, with RP and/or RRP profiles, etc.

LX & IB-LX
The LX version is designed with an internal Tie Back
connection between the packer barrel and Receptacle
the upper bushing. This design reduces
stab up time required to load the RPOB and
setting tool. However it is not recommended
for application where extended rotation or
high torque during rotation may be
encountered.

The IB-LX version is designed with an

integral one piece inner barrel. This design C-Clutch
provides a more robust capability for
applications where extended rotation or
high torques may be incountered.
Setting Tools Running Thread

LX & IB-LX with C-Clutch can be run with Stabilizer

the SJ, SJ-T or the H1-PL Setting tools. Buttons

The SJ Setting Tool (cc1059) is a RPOB Seal Bore

provides rotation ability during run in RPOB Profile
operations and can be used to run right

provides rotation capability before and after
setting the hanger and is designed to run
with RRP Rotating type hangers.
Ratchet Ring
The H1-PL Setting Tool (cc 1064) is a
hydraulic release setting tool and can be GS Ramp Packoff
run with either standard hangers or with
RRP type rotating hangers.

The LN Setting Tool (cc 1050) can be run

with an LX with out C-Clutch. The LN tool
does not have rotation capability.

Features:

Stabilizer Buttons made of a high

strength, low friction composite plastic
material are located between the setting
sleeve and the inner mandrel. This keeps
the setting sleeve centered during the
setting process and prevents friction loss
due to side loading as the setting sleeve
moves down over the inner mandrel.

The SE Seal provides a more robust

pressure seal between the outer setting
sleeve and the inner mandrel than a
standard o-ring seal. Using the SE type seal
allows a larger tolerance between the two
sleeves helping reduce friction during the
setting process.

Pressure Relief Ports are drilled through

the setting sleeve and placed just above the
connection point where the setting sleeve
makes up the packer setting cone and just
below the SE Seal. When the setting sleeve
is made up in the shop the small area
between the thread connection and the SE
seal contains air and is a closed
environment with the SE seal above and
the thread seal below. During setting
operations the packer cone is being pushed
down away from the SE Seal. Without the
pressure relief ports there would be a
vacuum lock which can cause a loss of
loading on the packoff as the setting weight
is being applied. The ports allow fluid to fill
the void as movement occurs thus
preventing the vacuum lock from occurring.

Setting the Packer RI 1718-31

The MD Packer Setting dogs are run as part of the setting

tool assembly and will be located inside the tieback
receptacle during run in.

It is important to calculate the distance from the dogs to the

top of receptacle and determine the maximum pick up
without opening the dogs during the setting tool release
operations.
LINER EQUIPMENT
The Packer dogs incorporate a shear indicator which
provide a positive indication that the minimum setting force
has reached the top of the packer. They also include a
bearing which allows for rotation of the setting string while
applying weight down on the packer.

The setting load required will vary depending on the packer

size. Generally the optimum load required ranges from
50,000 lbs to 80,000 and is defined as the load required to
be applied at the packer top and not the slack off weight at
surface. Check with technical support or engineering to
determine exact requirements for the size packer selected.

When applying load to the packer with the running string,

buckling and/or drag may result in limited load transfer to the
packer top. It is recommended to run a DRAGon calculation
to determine the running strings ability to transfer load to the
packer. The dragon program will provide guidance on total
weight that can be applied, the required slackoff at surface
and if rotation may be required to facilitate the load transfer
to the packer.

When cementing is completed lift the running string until the

dogs are located above the receptacle top. The setting dogs
will spring open. Slowly slack off and begin applying string
weight until the optimum load is applied at the packer and
hold the applied load for 2 to 3 minutes to allow the packoff
element to settle after setting.

If rotation is required pick up on string and begin rotation at

15 to 20 RPM and then slackoff and apply load while
continuing to rotate. Continue rotation while applying the
complete load to the packer. Do not exceed max torque Cement Complete Set Packer
capability of dog section.

Copper
Anti-Extrusion Ring
TIW Gold Seal Ramp Packoff

The TIW GS Ramp Packoff is the standard

for the LX Packer. HSN is the standard
Elastomer. Packoff
with Ramp Ring
Pressure Rating:

Up to 7500 PSI in most sizes

Pressure rating is dependent on size and Copper

load applied. Contact engineering for details Anti-Extrusion Ring
for a specific size packer.

Temperature Rating

HSN 320 F
Viton 400 F
Aflas 450 F

Setting Sequence:

The ramp ring on the ID of the packoff

provides a controlled initial extrusion of the
packoff and initial casing contact at the
center of the packoff as load is applied from
above.

As the setting load increases the packoff

continues to extrude evenly up and down
the packoff.

The copper rings begin to form outward as

the compression load moves up and down
the packoff until they contact the casing
creating an anti extrusion ring above and
below the packoff.

The ratchet ring locks in the compressive

load applied to the packoff.

Setting sequence:

As load is applied from above the ramp ring

pushes down and behind the expanding
ring extruding it out to the casing wall.

The back up rings are extruded out to the

casing forming containment rings above
and below the packoff.. The ratchet ring
locks in the compressive loading of the
packoff.

The EEL is not recommended where there

may be a requirement to squeeze the liner Set
top before setting the packer 6
