Patterns in Poetry
Directions: Answer the following questions following the poem. Make sure to read the
poem at least twice to yourself before you answer the questions. Many of these questions
have multiple parts. Make sure when you are answering them that you answer each part.
Once you have answered these questions you will be explaining your answers to the
class.

1. Who is the speaker of the poem? Who are they speaking to? Why do you think so?

2. What 5-7 words stick out most? Are there any connections?

3. What is the tone?

4. List at least 3 excerpts of the poem that appeal to the senses.


5. How does the imagery line up with the diction? How does the imagery help to
support the tone?

6. Are there any patterns that you notice? (Opposites, repetition, comparisons,
anomalies) Are there any other poetic devices?

7. How do these patterns and poetic devices contribute to the overall meaning of the
poem? Explain in detail.

8. In a thesis-like statement, write what the meaning of the poem is.
