twice to yourself before you answer the questions. Many of these questions have multiple parts. Make

1. Before you can begin to understand any poem, you must determine the speaker of the poem.
Who is the speaker of the poem?

2. Who is the speaker speaking to? Why do you think so?

3. Remember, before you can analyze the imagery you have to analyze for Diction. What 5-7
words stick out to you? Are there any connections between them? If so, what are they?
4. In a well-written sentence, state what the tone of the poem is.

5. Imagery is more than just what the poem makes you picture in your head. It appeals to all 5
senses. Write down at least 3 excerpts of the poem that appeal to the senses.

6. How does the imagery line up with the diction? What tone does the imagery combined with
diction establish?

7. What do you think the overall meaning of the poem is?

8. Using specific words/phrases from the poem, explain how the imagery affects the tone and how
it contributes to the meaning of the poem. This must be AT LEAST 4 full, well-written sentences
(Like something you would write in an essay). If you need more space, write on a separate
sheet of paper.
