DIPS Analysis Essay Response – Due March 5th

Now that we have completed discussion over the entire DIPS method, it is time to put it all
together.
Directions: Analyze the poem using the DIPS method and write an essay response that answers the
question, “What theme(s) and meaning of the poem is conveyed in the poem ‘An Echo Sonnet’”?
Use textual evidence as proof!!!
Your response should include:
1. A thesis statement that states what the overall meaning of the poem is.
2. Explanation of the speaker and who they are speaking to.
3. Discussion of the tone of the poem.
a. Explain how the diction in the poem establishes this.
b. Explain how the imagery supports this.
4. Discussion of any patterns/poetic devices that contribute to the poem’s meaning and an
explanation as to why.
5. Mention of the structure of the poem and how it aids in understanding the poem.
*** Note: the assignment will be a “Writing” assignment in PowerSchool for 40 points. Also, the
explanation of DIPS is on Canvas under files titled DIPS POETRY STRATEGY.

PEER REVIEW SESSION CHECKLIST


 The thesis statement is clearly written and states the writer’s interpretation of the poem in
an understandable way.
 Explains who the speaker is and who they are speaking to.
 States the tone of the poem. Uses at least two specific examples from the text as support.
 Discusses how the imagery supports the tone and gives added meaning to the poem at
least once
 Discusses at least one pattern/poetic device and how it adds meaning to the poem
 Explains how the structure aids in understanding the poem.
