videos here in North Korea are going. I think most of
these videos or rather all of these videos are related to
Kim Jong-il, the North Korean leader, huh?
Bernadette: Oh well, let’s just see. These videos we
have here are really for Kim Jong-il. And all of these
are made by his constituents.
Mika: Oh, how thoughtful these Koreans are for their
leader. Sweet, aren’t they? Right? So, let’s start the

video about Kim Jong-il’s childhood. Well here, we
give you, North Korea’s very own Boo Bee as Kim

fat tummy! Anyway, what can you say?
Mika: The video was great, honestly. Well, as we all
know Kim Jong-il’s childhood is not really that
interesting. Good thing that Lee Yu knows that.
Hazel: Yes, based from what I’ve read, Kim Jong-il is
already exposed to harshness and violence since then.
Some reports indicate that he was born in 1941 in
Siberia while his father was in exile. At a young age,
he already witnessed the World War II.
Bernadette: And also, when Korea regained
independence from Japan. When he was just a child,
people around him believed and accused him that he
was the one responsible for the death of his brother
Shura Kim.
Phoebe: Oh, how sad for a child like him. Maybe
these things urge him to be like his father, to replace
his father, Kim Il Sung, for being North Korea’s
leader. Well, Kim Jong-Il was raised to become his
father's successor.
Ida: But Kim Jong-il really respect his father in such
a way that, until now, though his father Kim Il Sung
had passed away, Kim Il Sung is still the president of
the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, or
simply North Korea.

“The Great Leader” and “The President for Eternity.”
And, Kim Jong-il still looked up on to his father until
now. That’s why Kim Jong-il is just North Korea’s
dictatorial leader, not president.
Mika: Kim Jong-il is also the de facto leader of the
Democratic People's Republic of Korea. He is the
Chairman of the National Defense Commission,
Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army,
and General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea
(the ruling party since 1948). He also became a
member of the Central People's Committee, the
government organization that determines policy and
laws. He is referred to as "Dear Leader".
Phoebe: Since the founding of North Korea in 1948
under Soviet guardianship, it has had only two
leaders: Kim Il-sung and, after his death in 1994, his
son, Kim Jong-il. Kim Jong-il is the first and only
hereditary leader in the Communist world.
Ida: Kim is portrayed as a weirdo or a joke. But he is
actually a well-informed, wily politician who was
trained for this position by his father, Kim Il-sung.
Unlike his father, Mr. Kim has not publicly groomed
any of his three sons to eventually take power. None
of his three sons has emerged as heir apparent. And
so, Western officials are unclear about who would
succeed the man known as the “Dear Leader.”
Bernadette: Both Kim il-Sung and Kim Jong-il are
all-knowing and all-powerful, as what their people
thought. Oh well, let’s just leave things out there.
Now guys, let’s move on to the number 4 most
revealing video. Well, I’ve notice that the videos we
have in here have their own meaning and punch to
the North Korean world, especially Kim Jong-il. Just

Phoebe: Wow. Is that a sarcastic attack? Well, thanks

Leomark: Hi there guys! Hope you really like my
video.
Bernadette: Well, we do. But, tell us more about your
video. I mean, what is this video all about?
Leomark: Um, as we all know, Kim Jong-il runs the
most isolated, repressive regime in the world.
Domestically, he runs the world’s most tightly
controlled society. And, North Korea continues to
rank last in the index of press freedom and it is the
only nation which earned the worst possible score on
political rights and civil liberties from Freedom
House for the 34th straight year. So, I made this
video to make Kim Jong-il realize those things.
Phoebe: You’re so brave, huh? You belong to the
most isolated people in the world. Then, you tried to
open the eyes of Kim Jong-il by that video. You’re
amazing.
Hazel: Though friendly with important visitors, Kim
is vicious to his own people. Kim Jong-il’s domestic
human-rights abuses really make him stand out! His
citizens are more shut off from the world than those
of any other nation. He keeps North Korea virtually
closed to the outside world. His government
represses its own people more completely than any
other in the world.
Ida: He has allowed his citizens to starve to death.
And, since he assumed power, almost 300,000 North
Koreans have fled to China to avoid food shortages.
His citizens really have no access to information
other than government propaganda. His harsh system
includes collective punishment (three generations of
a family can be punished for one member’s alleged
crime); detainment of roughly 200,000 citizens in
labor camps; and the capture, torture and jailing of
those who try to flee to China.
Bernadette: Yes, that’s true. An estimated 150,000
Koreans perform forced labor in prison camps. And,
an estimated 250,000 people are confined in
“reeducation camps.”
Phoebe: Malnourishment is really widespread!
According to the United Nations World Food
Program, the average 7-year-old boy in North Korea
is almost 8 inches shorter than a South Korean boy
the same age and more than 20 pounds lighter. Tsk,
tsk, tsk.
Leomark: That’s North Korea. We have many rules
and regulations, and it is very important to follow
them although we don’t always know why.
Mika: Another big problem in North Korea under
Kim Jong-il’s rule is widespread poverty. The
nation’s finances hit rock-bottom, resulting in a
famine that reportedly killed hundreds of thousands,
if not millions of people. But still, the economy has
been recovered, fortunately.
Bernadette: Kim Jong-il has sequestered his citizens
from the world to retain a strong hold. Cell phones
are illegal. Regular people cannot access the Internet,
and newspapers consist of state propaganda. Radios
and TVs receive only government channels. And the
worst, security forces enter homes just to make sure
this is so.
Leomark: Ahuh. North Korea is an incredibly tough,
resilient, and unpredictable country. And when we,
North Koreans, are already fully exposed to ideas
from the rest of the world, I hope we will be aware of
alternatives to the propaganda and speak out for
change on our own. Because, we people, have only
known monarchy, brutal Japanese rule and autocracy
—but never democracy, never.
Ida: And, during tha inauguration of Obama, North
Koreans, did not really know it right? Haha.
Leomark: Oh yeah, anyway.
Hazel: So, with its poor economy and lack of
sufficient food supplies, how much longer will Kim
Jong-Il remain in power? No one knows. Well, let’s
proceed to this next video by O-Lee and Boo Bee, the

Bernadette: Very wonderful video! The video says it
all!
Ida: Yeah, you’re right! The truth prevails. Have you
already heard about the nuclear threat to the United
States of America by North Korea?
Phoebe: Uh, What about that, girl?
Ida: Well, under Kim Jong-il, North Korea has
become a nuclear power. And, it became a threat to
USA.
Bernadette: The conflict with the United States over
North Korea's nuclear program has lasted for years.
The two nations remained deadlocked over the
nuclear question with North Korea remaining
steadfast in its right to develop nuclear weapons.
Mika: And in 2006, tensions continued to escalate.
The North Korea government announced that it had
conducted an underground test of its nuclear
weaponry. The United States, nearby Japan, and other
nations considered the test to threatening act and
have called for the United Nations to levy sanctions
against North Korea.
Hazel: But, there have been some reports of Kim
Jong-Il promising to stop further tests. However, this
pact won’t completely disarm the nation, because it
does not explicitly address North Korea’s existing
plutonium supply. That is large enough to make six to
eight bombs! The greatest threat posed by North
Korea to the U.S. is the potential export of its
plutonium to other nations or groups.
Leomark: And through the threat it posed to the
United States and its allies and for its efforts to create
nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass
destruction., Bush has called North Korea, together
with Iraq and Iran—three nations that sponsor
terrorism— one of the Axis of Evil. And, some
reports indicate that Kim Jong-Il was the driving
force behind the country's nuclear weapons program.
Ida: Then, Kim Jong-il now planned to launch a
satellite on a rocket as a part of a peaceful space
program. And some said the launch would actually be
the test-firing of a missile with a maximum range of
4,200 miles, designed to eventually carry a nuclear
warhead that could hit Alaska, US territory. I just
hope that these missile and nuclear forces are
defensive, not offensive.
Phoebe: Oh my god! What’s really happening to the
world we got here? What do they want? World War
III? Haha.
Leomark: Well, that in fact, I really do not know.
Maybe, strict measures are necessary because an outside
force is threatening our land. Anyway, let’s just go to

Mika: Okay, so you’ve heard it and you’ve watched
it. So, Kim Jong-il… Hmmm… It’s still your choice.
Hazel: Yep, that’s absolutely your choice Kim. Well,
speaking of the wrong that he has done… hmmm…
nevermind. Hey, guys, do you know that Kim Jong-il
is believed to have been officially married once and
to have had three mistresses?
Bernadette: Oh, really? Is that true?
Leomark: Yes, that’s true. Kim Young-suk is his wife.
Song Hye-rim is his first mistress. Ko Young-hee is
the second and Kim Ok is the third. Say?
Bernadette: Okay. Wow! Amazing!
Ida: And some fun facts about Kim Jong-il… Like his
father, Kim has a fear of flying, and has always
traveled by private armored train for state visits to
Russia and China. Haha. And he loves lobsters!
Leomark: He is also said to be a huge film buff,
owning a collection of more than 20,000 video tapes.
In 1978, on Kim's orders, South Korean film director
Shin Sang-ok and his actress wife Choi Eun-hee were
kidnapped in order to build a North Korean film
industry. Wow!
Mika: And, although soccer is the most popular sport
in North Korea, he preferred basketball, because
Koreans are a short race and Kim Jong-il says
playing basketball will make them taller. Nice theory
out there.
Bernadette: He is also very concerned with his
appearance—carefully styling his hair and wearing
lifts in his shoes to make him seem taller. The Dear
Leader, as the North Korean media refer to him,
wishes to be viewed as a modern leader, and a
truly peerless patriot, according to him.
Phoebe: Well, on the streets of North Korea, every
person is wearing a pin with the smiling face of Kim
Il-sung, the late father of the current dictator, Kim
Jong-il. Images of the two Kims are everywhere: on
billboards, in subways and in every classroom and
home. Haha! Vain much!
Ida: And, While Kim Il-sung was alive, his son
avoided the spotlight. North Koreans did not even
hear his voice until a broadcast in 1992, when at a
ceremony for the army's 60th anniversary, he said,
''Glory to the people's heroic military!'' Legendary,
huh?
Leomark: The Dear Leader is also a workaholic. Kim
Jong Il sleeps four hours a night, or if he works
through the night, as he sometimes does, he sleeps
four hours a day. His office is a hive of activity;
reports cross his desk at all hours. Dressed as always
in his signature khaki jumpsuit, he reads them all,
issuing instructions to aides, dashing off handwritten
notes or picking up the phone at 3 a.m. and telling
subordinates what should lead the news broadcasts or
whom to dispatch to a prison camp. His
micromanaging style is less Caligula, with whom he
has often been compared.
Mika: Too bad though, Mr. Kim has chronic heart
disease and diabetes.
Phoebe: Oh, I see. However, much about this
tenacious leader still remains as a mystery.
Ida: So guys, just remember this… Once a dictator,
always a dictator. But there is still the thing we call
“change”. Maybe someday, who knows? Right?
