Exercise 2: Summarizing Figures

Generate descriptive statistics (summarizing figures, tables and/or graphs) for the
following data sets using manual computation or software. Write a brief interpretation of
the results. Submit together with the computations or computer outputs.

1. The data set on student engagement contains the following variables:

age
gender
behavioural engagement scores (BE1, BE2, BE3) for time 1 (T1) and time 2 (T2)
emotional engagement scores (EE1, EE2, EE3) for T1 and T2
cognitive engagement scores (CE1, CE2, CE3) for T1 and T2
agentic engagement scores (AE1, AE2, AE3) for T1 and T2

2. a. A panel of 15 taste testers were asked to compare a local and imported chocolate.
Judges were asked to rate each chocolate on a 10-point scale, where 10 denotes
the highest score. The results of the experiment are given in the data labelled
“tsokolate”.

b. The data set “sunog kilay” contains scores on the first exam of ten randomly
selected students and the number of hours they studied and the investigator
wanted to find out if there is a relationship between the two (scores and number of
hours studied).

3. A study was conducted to determine whether premedical general weighted average

(Premed GWA) is related to school performance for the first three years of medical
school recorded as MEDGWA. (Note: the lower the GWA, the better the
performance).

4. A study to determine maternal factors associated with low birth weight was
conducted. Low birthweight was defined as birthweight less than 2500 grams.
The following were the variables of the study:
birthweight in grams (bwt)
smoking status during pregnancy (smoke)
history of hypertension (hxhpn)
presence of uterine irritability (ui)
number of physician visits during the first trimester (ftv)

5. A study was done to determine the effectiveness of using 0.1% adapalene cream
versus 0.05% tretinoin cream in the treatment of molluscum contagiosum. The
measure for effectiveness was a change in the number of lesions after 4 weeks of
treatment. The data set contains the following variables:
age
gender
treatment (tx)
location of the lesions (location)
duration of the disease in months (duration)
lesion count at baseline (wk0) and after 4 weeks of treatment (wk4)

6. A case-control study was done to determine the association between nutritional

status and outcome in dengue hemorrhagic fever. Cases were those who went into
shock and controls were those who did not go into shock. Nutritional status was
assessed using 2000 CDC BMI classification as underweight, healthy, overweight
and obese.

7. The following data show the amount spent on medical bills per month (variable
name: amount) and the number of household members (variable name: hhm) of 10
randomly selected household in Laguna. Is there a correlation between household
size and medical expenditure?

8. Laboratory determinations were done on 3 successive hospital days for platelet

count, wbc count and hematocrit among dengue hemorrhagic fever patients
classified as to grades of severity.
