CLASS TEST -1

SUBJECT- HEAT AND MASS TRANSFER

SEMESTER – 6 (MECH)

Question (A) Is Compulsory , Any Data Missing May Be Suitably Assumed. Neat Sketches Will Be Given
Credit Maximum marks : 28

1.

(a) Write the Fourier rate equation for heat transfer by conduction. Give the units and significance of
each term appearing in this question. (4 marks)

(b) Derive general heat conduction equation in Cartesian co-ordinates. (10 marks)

(c ) Two slab, Each 100 mm thick and made of materials with thermal conductivities of 16 W/m 0C and
1600 W/m0C, are placed in contact which is not perfact. Due to roughness of surfaces only 40% of area is
in contact and air fills 0.02 mm thick gap in the remaining area. If the extreme surfaces of the
arrangement are at temperatures of 2500C and 300C, determine the heat flow through the composite
system, the contact resistance and temperature from in contact. Take thermal conductivity of air as
0.032 W/m0C and assume that half of the contact is due to the either material. (10 marks)

2.

(a) Explain thermal diffusivity. (2 marks)

(b) A steam pipe which is 150 mm external diameter carries wet stream at temperature 2440C. It is
covered with two layers of lagging each 40 mm thick. The coefficients of thermal conductivity for two
layers are 0.07 W/m-K for the inner layer 0.1 W/m-K for the outer layer. The surface heat transfer co-
efficient for the outer surface is 3 W/m2K. Estimate the heat lost per hour for a 50 m length of lagged
pipe. The ambient temperature is 270C. Neglect thickness of stream pipe wall and the internal surface
resistance. (7 marks )

(c) A composite slab has two layers of thickness 50 mm and 100 mm. The thermal conductivities of the
material of these layers are temperature dependent and prescribed by the relations-
K1= 0.05 (1+ 0.006 t) W/m deg First material and
K2= 0.04 (1+ 0.007 t) W/m deg second material.
Where t is the temperature in degree centigrade. The inside and outside surface temperatures of the
slab are maintained at 5000C and 2000C. Determine steady state heat flux through composite slab and
the interface temperature. Draw the neat sketch of the slabs. (7 marks )

(d) A large panel wall of thickness 0.2 m, thermal conductivity k= 1.2 W/m0C and surface area A=15 m2.
The two sides of the wall are maintained at constant temperatures of 1200C and 500C. Determine-
(i) The variation of temperature within the wall and the value of temperature at x= 0.1 m
(ii) The rate of heat conduction through the wall under steady conditions. (7 marks)
