Introduction
On January 24, 2018, we visited construction site, we saw construction of
load bearing structure. Also we saw different part of load bearing structures like,
parapet wall, load bearing wall, slab, brick foundation etc.

 COMPONENTS OF LOAD BEARING STRUCTURES
A building has a two basic part:

1. Super structure

1. Parapet Wall

2. Slab

3. Load Bearing Wall

4. Plinth

5. D.P.C.

2. Sub structure

1. Foundation

1. SUPER-STRUCTURE

Super structure is that part of structure which is above the ground level.

1. Parapet Wall

A parapet is a barrier which is an extension of the wall at the edge of

a roof, terrace, balcony, walkway or other structure.

2. Slab

A concrete slab is a common structural element of modern buildings

3. Load Bearing Wall

A load-bearing wall or bearing wall is a wall that is an active structural

element of a building, that is, it bears the weight of the elements above said
wall, resting upon it by conducting its weight to a foundation structure. The
materials most often used to construct load-bearing walls in large buildings
are concrete, block, or brick.
4. Plinth

Plinth is the part of building it is located between floor level and ground level.

5. D.P.C.

A damp-proof course (DPC) is a barrier through the structure designed to

prevent moisture rising by capillary action such as through a phenomenon
known as rising damp
6. Sill level

A window sill (also written as windowsill or window-sill) is the surface at the

bottom of a window

7. Partition wall

A partition wall is a wall that

separates rooms, or divides a
room. Partition walls are
usually not load-bearing.
Partition walls do not carry any
type of loading from super
structure.
Generally it is used for
dividing two spaces.
It is made up of different
materials like, brick, timber
ply-wood, etc.

.
2. SUB-STRUCTURE

Sub-structure is the lower portion of the building, usually located below the
ground level, which transmits the load of the super-structure to the supporting
soil.

1. Foundation
Foundation is therefore the part of the structure which is in direct contact with the
ground to which the loads are transmitted.
