ABSTRACT

This project is about using solar energy for mobile battery charging. Solar chargers are simple and ready to use
devices which can be used by anyone specially in remote areas. It is composed of solar panel, regulator, diode, capacitors,
LED and resistor. The solar panel pick up sun energy and convert it to electrical energy. Because the output voltage that
the solar panel produces vary with the light intensity, the output DC is also unstable. The function of the voltage regulator
is to have the desired constant voltage, which is 5 volts. The diode (IN4001) is a blocking diode which only allows the
charge to travel in one direction only and avoids it to travel backward. The capacitors are used as charging banks and for
lessening high frequency noise as well as to smoothen input DC.

Solar Powered Mobile Charger has many advantages such as it has renewable energy source because it is directly
from the sun and its free from the charge. It does emit zero pollution and it is very environmental friendly. It also help
reduces cost such as electrical bills but it has also disadvantages like, it needs in order to work and its charging time is
much slower than the main charger.

To make sure to have plenty of energy in the future, we must all conserve and use it efficiently. This is the reason
why we decided to make a solar powered mobile charger as our project.

I. INTRODUCTION
A. Discussion
In this generation each and every person is using a mobile phone. Through the years, science and
technology has allowed the mobile phones to become smaller and smaller, not only the phones but also its
batteries. However, as our phone evolves, we still have one problem and that is how to charge our phones when
the battery becomes low. Most people carry extra batteries with them or power banks. Power bank is so useful
as long as it has charge left on it. Just like phone, you need also to charge you power bank but what if there is
power interruption, especially during typhoons and other calamities. You cannot charge neither phones nor
power banks, so with design this mobile charger from which we can charge phone anywhere at any time as long
as the sun is present. In this project we are using the concept of harvesting energy from the sun or what we call
solar energy using solar panels. By using solar panels, we can charge our phones in remote areas where there is
problem of electricity.

This project is so affordable. The components are reasonably priced and all of it are not that complex.
The components are solar panels, diode, switch, IC voltage regulator, capacitors, resistor and LED. By making
this project you will not problem when there is power interruption because you can charge phone anywhere at
any time under the sun .
B. OBJECTIVES
Solar energy is one of our renewable and readily available source of energy. The industry of Solar Power
System is becoming bigger in other countries and is showing good results with its practicality and functionality.
So our group, given that solar panel is our main component, created this project, the Solar Powered Mobile
Charge to target the needs of the users and make life easier. This is design to use light energy to produce
voltage, enough to supply the mobile phone batteries. The objectives of this project are the following:

1. It is used to save the electricity bill cost in the long run since it is a good alternative.
2. It will also utilize renewable source while reducing environmental pollution.
3. It is at low maintenance and doesn't require too much repair, so this is economical.
4. This project also aims for the users because it is portable for travellers. You can carry it around without much
space to occupy and the source of energy or power is everywhere.
5. This is also of a great help to those who where in remote areas where transmission line are not yet available.
C. SCOPES AND LIMITATIONS
In our project, Solar Powered Mobile Charger has been advantageous whenever main supply is not
present. By the use of the sunlight, the solar panel conducts current that is being regulated to make the output
voltage stable. Since it uses sunlight, the project cost effective making the charging of the mobile phone free of
charge. It also emits zero pollution therefore, the project is environmental friendly.

The Solar Powered Mobile Charger is so efficient but then, there are some sorts of limits that has incur in the
project. The project's main component is the solar panel thus, making it work during daytime where sunlight is
present. And because the project don't have an installed battery for energy storage, the panel must be exposed to
sunlight long enough to make the project work.

B. CIRCUIT DESIGN AND OPERATION
The circuit of the Solar Powered Mobile Charger is shown below in Figure 2.1

Figure 2.1

The solar panel traps the solar energy from the sun. The output of the solar panel enters the circuit. The
diode which is IN4001 will prevent the charge to travel backwards. The single - pole single - throw switch let
the user turn on or turn off the charger. The capacitors and the IC voltage regulator will adjust the input voltage
to 5 volts. A large capacitor like the 100uF acts as a "reservoir" to store the energy. The larger the capacitor the
more constant the DC. When large current peaks are drawn, the capacitor supplied surge energy helps the
regulator not to drop in the output. The capacitors also have good ability to filter out low frequency ripple and
to respond to reasonably fast load changes. The small input capacitor (1uF) has excellent high frequency
response and noise filtering capabilities. The LM7805 will regulate the input to make it constant 5 volts. The
capacitor (47uF) helps to supply any gross load changes thus taking some load of regulator. The second output
capacitor which is 1uF is there to deal with high frequency noise. The LED as an indicator and the resistor will
support it.
