FIXTURE TO MOUNT AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE ON HANDLEBAR OF A BICYCLE

1. INTRODUCTION
Engineering design is the creative process of identifying needs and then devising a solution to fill those
needs. This solution may be a product, a technique, a structure, a project, a method, or many other things
depending on the problem. The general procedure for completing a good engineering design can be
called the Engineering Method of Creative Problem Solving.
Problem solving is the process of determining the best possible action to take in a given situation. The
nature of problems that engineers must solve varies between and among the various branches of
engineering. Because of the diversity of problems there is no universal list of procedures that will fit
every problem. Not every engineer uses the same steps in their design process, but the following list,
which includes most of the steps of the design method that engineers use.
 Identifying the problem.
 Gathering needed information.
 Searching for creative solutions.
 Overcoming obstacles to creative thinking.
 Moving from ideas to preliminary designs (including modeling).
 Evaluating and selecting a preferred solution.
 Preparing reports, plans, and specifications. (Project Planning)
 Implementing the design. (Project Implementation)
IDENTIFYING THE PROBLEM
Evaluating the needs or identifying the problem is a very important step in finding a solution. An
improper definition of the problem will cause the engineer to waste time or arrive at an incorrect
solution. It is important that the stated needs be real needs. A great design may be worthless if it
duplicates other known designs or doesn’t benefit many people.
GATHERING NEEDED INFORMATION
After defining the problem, an engineer begins to gather all the information and data necessary to solve
the problem. It could be physical measurements, maps, results of laboratory experiments, patents,
results of opinion surveys, or any number of other types of information. Engineers should always try to
build on what has already been done before. Information on related problems that have been solved or
unsolved may help engineers find the best solution.
SEARCHING FOR CREATIVE SOLUTIONS
There are several techniques to help a group or individual to produce original creative ideas. The
development of these new ideas may come from creativity, a subconscious effort, or innovation, a
conscious effort. Some techniques suggest that may aid a group or individual in obtaining a creative
solution are brainstorming, checklists, attribute listing, the forced relationship technique, and adopting
a different point of view. Each of these will be discussed briefly. The purpose to most of these methods,
which can be almost like a game, is to break the set patterns of thought that every individual develops.

Checklists
One of the simplest methods for generating new ideas is to make a checklist. The checklist encourages
the user to examine various points, areas, and design possibilities. For example, to improve a device,
you may want a checklist like this:
 Ways the device could be put to other uses.
 Ways the device could be modified.
 Ways the device could be rearranged.
 Ways the device could be magnified.
 Ways the device could be reduced, etc.…
Different Point of View
People sometimes stretch their minds by adopting different points of view. Imagine a similar problem
located on a strange planet or in free fall. Try to identify with the stone that is to be crushed, or the fruit
that is going to be peeled. Pretend that common materials or components are not available or that certain
exceptional ones are. Try to project how nature would do it. The methods are endless.
OVERCOMING OBSTACLES TO CREATIVE THINKING
Here are some specific actions and attitudes that can be employed to overcome obstacles to creative
thinking
 Avoid placing unnecessary constraints on the problem being solved.
 Search for different ways to view the problem, avoiding preconceived beliefs and stereotypical
thinking.
 Recognize that there are non-engineering solutions to many problems. Consider approaches
that other disciplines might use.
 Look for relationships that are remote and solutions that are unusual and non-traditional. Most
creative thought involves putting experiences and thoughts into new patterns and arrangements.
 Divide complex problems into manageable parts and concentrate on solving one part at a time.
 Allow time for incubation, after periods of intensive concentration.
 Be open to a variety of problem-solving strategies.
PREPARING REPORTS, PLANS, AND SPECIFICATIONS
After selection of the preferred design, it must be communicated to those who must approve it, support
it, and translate it into reality. This communication may take the form of an engineering report, or a set
of plans and specifications. Plans and specifications are the engineer’s means of describing to a
manufacturing division or to a contractor sufficient detail about a design so that it can be produced or
constructed. Engineering drawings, written and oral communications, and scheduling and planning a
design project are very important in implementing a design smoothly and efficiently.

Engineering Drawings
Engineers create detailed technical drawings that show what the design looks like, what parts are
necessary, how to assemble it, and how to operate it once constructed. These graphical specifications
are probably the most important type of documentation for engineering design problems. They
communicate visually to the technical team what verbal communications cannot adequately convey.
The drawings must be done clearly and according to standards and conventions accepted by the team.
Considerations in Part Drawing:
 Try to draw as much as simple so that it can understand easel and manufacture.
 Try to give as much information as possible
 Make sure about dimensioning.
2. DESIGN ENGINEER CONSIDERATIONS:
Considerations as a Production Engineer:
 Less material should be used.
 Less number of operations to be used to manufacture the product.
 Material should be used which is available in surroundings.
Considerations as a Customer:
 Fixture can be used easily
 With stylish look
 Cost of the product should be less.
 Easy to remove and fix.
Design approach towards fixture to mount an electronic device on handlebar of a bicycle:
When people travel using bicycle they cannot put their mobile phone into their pockets. If they put
mobile phone inside the pocket it may trouble while peddling, to avoid that problem I thought to design
a fixture which can be mounted on handle bar
Features that a customer can expect from Manufacturer
 It can be fitted exactly to mobile
 The cost of the product should be cheap and stylish
 Fixture can be easy to use
 There should not be any damage to the mobile if the fixture is used
Features that a Design Engineer can give
 It should be weather proof
 It can rotate 3600 so that customer can take videos and photos while travelling

 Damping effect to avoid mobile damage

Note: While Designing the part, Design Engineer should also keep in his mind that the required material
should be used less while manufacturing the product. Design should not be complicated to
manufacturing the product and he has to think to reduce the number of elements to be used
3.MATERIALS:
Characteristics of IP54 Materials:
 Protection from dirt, dust, oil, and other non-corrosive material
 Protection from contact with enclosed equipment
 Protection from splashing water
 Available in aluminium, carbon steel, and stainless steel
 Available in wall-mounted, free standing, troughs, and JIC box
 Engraving, silk-screening, or anodizing services available
 Custom with cut outs, insulation, hinges, latches or locks
Polycarbonate is a tough, durable, and lightweight plastic material which provides maximum protec-
tion against drops. Due to its strength, the material is suitable for a variety of strong products such as:
bullet proof glass, storage containers and eyeglasses.
Optional coatings or additives are usually added on the material to protect it from degradation by UV
rays as well scratches. Polycarbonate cases are suitable for protecting cell phones against heavy drops
up to 20 feet.

ADAVANTAGES
 Immense strength
 Light-weight
 Customizable
 High Impact resistance
 Resistance to chipping, cracking and scratches.
4. FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION OF THE FIXTURE:
In the market so many industries are manufacturing the Mobile mounting fixtures so to give competition
I gave some extra features to fixture
 Mobile case can rotate 3600 degrees horizontal as well as vertical because I have used Bearing
as well as keys
 While riding the bicycle user can operate mobile because on screen I have used cover material
 Mobile case is water and rust proof
 Mobile can be fixed at any position just user has to loosen the keys and fix the position and
tighten the keys.
 I have used plastic friction bearings to control the rotation, when user applies the force then
only it will rotate.

 When user don’t want vertical rotation he can fix case directly to the bearing.
 To avoid damage when bicycle vibrated I have used rubber material for damping.
 I gave different colours to look differently and stylish.
 User can take videos and photos while riding the bicycle.
 To balance the total case and bearing I gave two sides fitting.
 It is easy to use and remove and it can convert two types.
 I have used IP54 standards materials to avoid rust, water proof and shock proof etc.…
5. ANALYSIS:
After Designing and Assembling the Fixture it is to be analysed for the interference. Interference has
been analysed for several times and finally there is no interference in the design.
PROBLEMS WHILE DESIGNING THE FIXTURE:
 When drawing 2D diagrams sometimes I forgot some dimensions later I corrected them when
I’m doing the assembly drawing
 When I was doing assembly drawing some dimensions not matches because of wrong
imagination.
 Several times interference occurred but finally there is no interference.
5. SOLUTIONS:
 While drawing the part drawing see that every line is fully constrained.
 While drawing the assembly drawing check all dimensions matched or not.
 Check for interference
 Check the units at the starting.
 Try to use less number of operations.
6. APPLICATIONS:
 You can use the fixture to clamp your mobile on the handle bar.
 You can take photos and videos while riding the bike.
 You can listen music when you are riding the bicycle.
