Installation and Operation Manual

1. Precautions and Safety Warnings

* Hazardous voltages exist within the Battery Extension pack (BEP). The cover must be only removed
by authorised and trained service personnel.

* The total or partial current in the battery can cause electric shocks. Make sure that the battery
terminals are not touched once the cover is removed.

* If the batteries are to be replaced, the 'old' batteries must be disposed of in accordance with
local environmental and safety standards. They are toxic waste!

Do not throw the batteries on to a fire: they may explode.

Do not attempt to open the batteries: they do not require maintenance and the acid electrolyte
is harmful to skin and eyes, and is toxic if inhaled or swallowed.

* If the BEP is connected to the UPS and the safety fuses are inserted, the external sockets of
the UPS may be live.

* Do not start or install the BEP if there is any visible damage, leaks or white powdery residue on
the exterior of the unit.

* The removable mains cable is intended to be used as a safety cut-out. Take care to leave a suitable
amount of free space at the rear of the BEP to enable easy access to the connection points.('C' series
only)

* Do not site the BEP in any location where water or any other liquid or foreign objects could enter
the unit.

* If a emergency arises, remove the mains cable (safety cut-out) from the BEP or wall socket before
attempting to handle the BEP. ('C' series only)

Installation and Operation Manual

General Description

This series of BEP battery boxes increases the back up time available to the load during possible black-outs.
Each 'C' series BEP contains, (in addition to the batteries inside it) an optimised switching technology battery
charger to charge the batteries. It is possible to connect a number of BEPs in parallel in order to obtain a high
level of autonomy in case of power failure. The use of an internal battery charger ('C' series only) in the BEP
means that rapid recharging of each battery, independent of the number in use, is possible without overloading
the internal battery charger of the UPS.

The following diagram shows the configuration of the 'C' series BATTERY BOX:

3. Installation

Location

Please observe the following when choosing where to position the BEP and UPS:

1. The surface must be stable and even.

2. The location must not be exposed to direct sunlight or hot air.
3. The ambient temperature of the room should be between 20oC and 25 oC.
4. The relative humidity of the room must not be allowed to exceed 90% at worst case.
5. The location should allow at least 50mm of clear air flow around the UPS and BEP and none of
the ventilation slots must be covered.
6. The location should ensure that the interconnecting cables cannot be pulled accidentally or exposed
to damage from falling objects or liquids.

Making The Connections and Initial Switch On

1) Install the BEP with the UPS switched off.

2) Check that the battery current of the BEP is suitable for the UPS (check the data label on the back of the
BEP and the UPS manual).
3) Connect the battery exit cable (4) to the expansion socket on the back of the UPS (if it is the only BEP)
or to the expansion sockets of other BEPs (5). Ensure that the screws of the protective cover are tight.
4) Insert the two fuses used in the appropriate fuse carriers (3) at the back of the BEP.
5) Connect the supply cable of the BEP (2) to the supply. ('C' series only)
6) Switch the interrupter (1) to ON at the back. ('C' series only)
The LED that signals the presence of power will immediately light up. ('C' series only)
After a few seconds’ delay the LED that signals the battery charging function will light up. ('C' series
only)
7) Switch on the UPS.
After about 30 seconds, check that the UPS is functioning correctly: simulate a black-out by disconnect-
ing the supply cables of the UPS and the BEP from the plug. The load should continue to be supplied,
and the “battery working” LED should light up on the front panel of the UPS. A bleep should be heard
about every 7 seconds. The UPS should return to normal function after the supply cables are
reconnected.

Multiple expansion

It is possible to connect a number of BATTERY BOXes in parallel to provide prolonged autonomous func-
tioning. The connections should be made as shown in the simplified diagram below:

BATTERY TEST - SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION

If the UPS to which the BATTERY BOX is connected carries out a periodic check of battery efficiency ensure that, once
the BATTERY BOX has been installed, the installer carries out the software input required to perform the test correctly.
The test depends on the total capacity of the batteries and therefore the parameters must be updated to enable the micro-
processor to calculate the efficiency.

If the test shows the batteries are inefficient, it is advisable to change the batteries in the UPS and the BATTERY BOX as
they are no longer capable of maintaining the charge required to support the autonomy needed.

4. Service and Warranty Information

4.1 Service Information

Should you need to contact the Advance-Galatrek Service Department, please ensure that you have the model and serial
number of the UPS and/or associated hardware available. If any item needs to be returned to Advance-Galatrek, please:

1. Obtain a Customer Service Enquiry Number (CSE) , from our Service Department.
2. Ensure that the CSE number is clearly marked on any package(s) returned.
Any packages received, where this number is not clearly shown on the outer packing and the accompanying despatch
dockets may be turned away upon arrival.
3. Pack the items to be returned in secure and safe packaging.
If the original shipping cartons and packing material are not available, the unit must be boxed and packed securely to
prevent any damage during transit. If an item arrives at the factory in a damaged condition, any remaining product

4.2 Warranty Information

The company warrants each new Uninterruptible Power System (UPS) and associated hardware to be free from
defects in material and workmanship, beginning from the date of invoice.

The Warranty period

Inside Europe, the standard warranty period is two years. The first year covers parts, labour and batteries.
The second year covers parts and labour only. The batteries are covered in the second and subsequent years
by the remainder of the battery manufacturer's warranty. Outside Europe, the standard warranty period is one
year and covers parts and labour only. The batteries are covered by the battery manufacturer's warranty. The
response time statements below refer to UK mainland installations. For other areas contact your supplier.

Response times inside Warranty

When a UPS alarm condition occurs, the company will attempt a first line response over the telephone line.
Should the alarm condition prove to be a hardware fault, the company will visit site within three working days
or provide a 24 hour swap out replacement or a new UPS. The 24 hour swap out applies to UPS below 3kVA
with plug-in connections. The customer shall be responsible for ensuring the safe return of the suspect UPS,
including carriage. If the original packing has been destroyed, a new set can be obtained from Galatrek. Carriage
charges for the replacement UPS will be borne by Galatrek.

Response times outside Warranty

Outside warranty, the company will co-ordinate a service response in line with customer requirements.

Faster response times

For a guaranteed next working day or same working day response time, the company provides comprehensive
maintenance plans.

Emergency calls
Where the standard response times are unacceptable due to the critical nature of the application, the company
will always endeavour to work in line with customer requirements. In such instances, an emergency response
charge may apply.
