(continued)
Transitional Academic Night: On April 27th, we will be having a “Transitional Academic Night.” This is an evening in
which you attend the next grade’s presentation to hear about curriculum, supplies, and expectations. We will be distributing
curriculum guides some textbooks (which are no longer adopted by CCSD), and providing a question/answer time for parents.
So…your kindergarten student would attend the first grade presentation, first graders attend the second grade
presentation…and so on. We are reaching out to the sixth grade teachers at Greenspun to see if they’re available to come that
evening and provide a presentation in the MP Room for our exiting 5th graders.

SBAC Testing Coming Up: Parents of students in grades 3, 4, and 5, our students will be beginning to take the state
mandated tests (SBAC) in English language arts, math, and science (for fifth). These tests are given in elementary through
middle school and are required by the state. They are computer adaptive tests which mean that depending on how the student
answers the questions determines the level of questioning given. All students are tested at the grade level to which they are in,
however the tests can provide more rigorous questions to test the ability of students. However, they are only scored for the
school/state purposes on the grade-level questions. Each test has a “CAT” which is the traditional multiple choice and short
answer and a “PT” which is the lengthy writing portion. We will begin with 3rd and 5th grade testing and students will test
from 9:30-11:30 each day. These tests are NOT timed and are ONLY given through the computer. They will take a portion
each day (English Language Arts CAT on one day and the English Language Arts PT on another).

Testing begins April 9th (we test Monday through Thursday and a few Fridays with 3 computer labs)

We are asking that you write positive notes to your child each day they are testing and have paired each intermediate class up
with a primary class to be their “cheerleaders” and give the class positive praise notes as well. We are implementing several
attendance incentives to minimize make-ups and raffling off bikes for attendance.

We also have school-wide quiet hours from 9:30-11:30 and adjust lunches and specialists schedules to give our students the
optimal testing environment. Once a student has begun a test, they cannot leave school and come back into the building to
pick up where they left off (all sections once started must be finished).

We are excited to see how our kids do, they always impress us! Last year we had 7 students score a perfect score and the year
before that we had 12 score a perfect score! Wow!

*These tests do not affect your child’s reportcard grades or next year’s class placement and scores do not come out until July or August.
