National identity of a state can be expressed in different ways by the citizen of the state

which designates their unity as one nation. According to Niels Mulder, National identity of a
state defined as a means of building the strength of the state through creating popular
identification with its ruling regime. In relation to that Niels Mulder, believe that it is possible to
mobilize the populace to celebrate their state and wage war in its name under the motto of
right and wrong. By its core, such blind loyalty to the state has nothing natural to it, the result
of the propaganda of those who own the state. But if the people distrust the message
propagated and do not accept it wholeheartedly they will not identify with the state or regime
and their loyalty cannot be expected or taken for granted. To identify the national identity of
the state particularly to the Filipino identity Niels Mulder provide following reasons: a. through
the citizenship, b. by the national symbol it represents, and c. the religion of the state.

First citizenship a source of identity, Niels Mulder observed that when world class
boxing Manny Pacquiao defend his title in the international arena and everybody is watching to
the television, it actually evoke a sense of national community and identity to the Filipinos. The
citizenship of Manny Pacquiao and other famous Filipino celebrities abroad reflects the identity
of the Filipinos around the world. But Niels Mulder also observed that the lack of Filipino
enthusiasm for celebrating the nation state by means of military parade or independence that
thoroughly express Filipinosis and Pinoy Civilization was disregarded. The widespread
disinterest in the National holidays like Bonifacio and Rizal day, which merely remind the
people of the closure of banks and offices and having people take the leisure to clean their
home. Because of that Filipino people are unhappily unaware that such days have been created
to celebrate the state and to invoke the spirit of nationalism. Filipinos rather preferred to
express its national identity in the sense of sporting events like basketball and boxing, victory of
beauty queens in the international contest and through popular religious celebration and
observances. In such way, people can express their sense of belonging to each other and their
way of life. As a result of that, the real Filipino identity is expressed in its little ands simple form
in home and local community.

Second, National symbols as the source of national identity. Based on Niels Murder, in
order to impress the Filipino first-graders a sense of belonging to the nation state, they are
obliged to study an array of national symbols in line with the American example. The flag of the
state is one of the national symbols with the powerful force that designates national identity.
But Niels Mulder argued that not all national symbols reflect identity to the state like the
bangus (national fish) and lechon (national food) which failed to arouse positive emotions to
the different minority and sector of groups in the society and other faiths. For Niels Mulder,
those symbols stated above except from the flag are not totally qualified to be part of national
identity. And it did not reflect identity around the world to the Filipino.

Third, religion source of national identity, In the Philippines where majority of the
people practiced Catholicism which influenced by the Spaniards during colonial period. It is
appropriate to note that religion played as a keystone of individual’s identity or national
identity. Philippines as the only Asian nation where majority of the people practiced Catholic
Christianity give a sort of national identity to its neighboring Asian nation. This Asian nation
recognized the Philippines as the only Asian Nation who practiced Christianity which reflects to
its identity to the world. In addition to that, Niels Mulder give emphasize that religious drive is
individual- orientation in its conforming of persons moral worth, such religiously incited
righteousness that can also exert substantial pressure on those who had political power. It was
the church power also that appeal and played an important role in the mass demonstrational
against former President Marcos (the magnanakaw) and Estrada (the showbiz president).

In conclusion, National identity of a state can be expressed in the different way and
form. The Filipino identity expressed it in religion, citizenship and national symbols of the state.
That reflected their sense of belongingness but it did not totally provide substantive true spirit
of national identity of the Filipinos. With that Niels Mulder believed that Filipino identity is
expressed in a distinct lifestyle and in its characteristics rather that in its important symbols
that are meant to stand for a collective history and the nation state. Filipinos did not give too
much importance to the Filipinosis and national symbol that can reflect to their national
identity of being Filipino. And it appeared that there was some misunderstanding between the
Filipino way of life and how it was thought to be today. Therefore, Niels Mulder conclude that
Filipino national identity possesses deficiency and the insufficient adherence that Filipino
national hood attracts lie in the failure of the state to mould the population into an
encompassing rural order in which people can distinctly imagine that they belong together.
Because of these cleavages, nation building and Filipino identity remain a task of which
completion will stretch into the distant future. The problem is in our hand and we need to solve
the problem by our own hand and we need to solve the problem by our hand, in order to
achieve our goal and provide sense of unity in our community and to our identity as a Filipino.
