Captain Phillips Measurement Project

This project will show your understanding of measurements and conversions. You will be
calculating different types of measurement while converting them between metric and imperial
systems. Google will help you with providing different numbers for conversions, however you
must SHOW YOUR WORK for full marks.
The project is split into parts based on a true story and a great movie. For more context, watch
the film or read the plotline and story on Wikipedia. Complete each part through the various
tasks while also showing your work throughout.
Pretend you are Captain Richard Phillips commanding the Maersk Alabama cargo ship, you have
a delivery to make to various counties in the world. However, a gang of African pirates has
hijacked your ship and taken your crew hostage. It is up to you and your mathematical skills to
save the day!

Part 1: Departure
1. You have just docked your ship into the harbor to prepare for loading of the
cargo. You have to do an inspection. Complete the following chart.
Ship Measurements Yards Miles Grams Kilograms
Length of Ship: 2 KM XXXXX XXXXXX

Height of Ship: 67 Feet XXXXX XXXXXX

Weight of Crew: 1300 lbs XXXXXX XXXXXX

Weight of Cargo: 2100 lbs XXXXXX XXXXXX

2. You must travel to the countries of Brazil (4000 miles), Egypt (176 000
yards), Congo (257 000 meters) and China (1200 kilometers)

a) How many kilometers is each destination away from the harbor?

b) How many kilometers total is the entire voyage?

c) If gas costs 0.85 cents per kilometer, how much in gas money do you
need?

Part 2: Life at Sea and Hijacking

1) Your ship is split into the following areas and measurements. Calculate the
area of each room of the ship.

2) The pirates have boarded the ship. They take your 20 man crew hostage to
hold in the navigation room. If each crew member takes up an area of 4 feet
by 4 feet, can they all fit in the navigation room?

Part 3: The Rescue Mission

1. You have sacrificed yourself as a hostage in order to save your crew. You
are now inside an escape pod with the pirates. You begin pacing around this
circular pod that has a radius of 14 feet.

a) What is the circumference/perimeter of the pod as you walk around it?

b) What is this measurement in inches?

2. It is starting to become very hot in the pod. You see the imperial temperature
of 85 degrees Fahrenheit. However, you are only familiar with the metric
system. How many degrees Celsius is it in the pod?

c) You have one cone full of water to last until the army saves you. If one
sip is 2 mL and the cone has a radius 8 and a slant of 5. How many sips
of water can you take? (Remember, you cannot take quarter or half sips.
Round to the nearest number)
