Globalization and Children Summit Project

Social 10-1 & 10-2

Background Info
Globalization has impacted the lives of children since exploration began. Children have
experienced both positive and negative effects from social, economic, environmental and political
global interactions. Positive effects have provided children with many opportunities to improve
their futures. Negative effects have, at times, devastated lives.

Your Assignment
An international summit has been organized to hear varying perspectives regarding the issue of
the effects of globalization on children around the world. Your objective is to represent the views
of one of the following stakeholders at this summit and present their position in relation to the
issue question:

To what extent has globalization impacted the lives of children around the world?

In an assigned group, you will represent one of the following stakeholders:

1. President of Joe Fresh.

2. Joe Fresh factory worker (child)
3. Survivor of a residential school
4. Slave owner
5. Industrial Revolution factory worker (child)
6. Child Soldier
7. Free the Children (NGO)
8. UNICEF
9. Street Kids International (NG0)
10. American or Canadian consumers
11. Child of an immigrant/refugee family

Objective #1 Summit Speech – What is the position of your assigned group on the issue question?

After briefly researching information about your stakeholder group, identify the perspective your group
has on the issue question. Divide work according to the strengths your group members may bring to the
assignment. Fill in the Group Task and Goal Management sheet. This sheet must be handed in with your
speech and should be used to complete tasks assigned to you and evaluate your group members.

Conduct further research in order to answer the following questions:

1. Who does your group represent?

2. What is your group’s main objective with regards to the issue?
3. From the perspective of the stakeholder you represent
a. State your position (answer the main issue question directly) AND state whether
globalization’s impact on children has been mostly positive, mostly negative or both.
b. Develop one or more arguments to support your position.
c. Support your position with evidence.
Evidence may include statistics, facts, laws, historical or current case studies, historical or current
testimonies, etc . NOTE: You must have a minimum of three sources. Record sources used on a
bibliography page which must be submitted for evaluation
Using the information gathered, compose a two page speech written in paragraph form. This speech will
be presented to the class during the Globalization and Children Summit. The speech must present the
perspective of your group and comprehensively address the main issue question. The language must be
formal and attempt to convince other summit participants that your perspective is justified.

You must submit a written copy of your speech for evaluation INCLUDING a BIBILOGRAPHY of sources
used for research.

NOTE: You are expected to take on the role of your assigned group. As you are participating in a formal
summit, your dress should be appropriate for the situation and the group you represent. Your group should
dress similarly and have appropriate props. Effort and creativity in this area will be evaluated as part of
the quality of your presentation (see rubric).

Objective # 2 – The Summit

Presentations - each group member will present part of the speech at the Summit (maximum 4 minutes).

While other groups are presenting, each student in the class must take notes on other perspectives and
submit these for evaluation.

Group Task Management Stakeholder: ________________________

A strategy to use within group projects is to assign each group member to a task (some may work on the
same task) to reduce the overall workload for each student and to hold each member accountable. Use the
following chart to set goals and tasks for each member of the group, check that you are completing all
assigned tasks and refer back to this sheet when completing the Self Assessment.

When assigning tasks refer to Objectives 1 and 2. Ensure that the work is distributed as equitable as
possible to remain fair to each other.
