Chapter 1: Notes

1.1 What is astrology

twin births = acid tests of an astrological doctrine.

1.2 India's astrology

can explain differing lives of twins born a few minutes apart

can distinguish between what a person is, wants to be, thinks he is, what world
thinks he is.

1.3 Basics
1.3.1 Grahas

7 planets - including 'shadow planets' aka mathematical points Rahu and Ketu.
11 moving mathematical points known as upagrahas.
+ some special mathematical points - special ascendants.

1.3.2 Rashis

positions = longitudes = sphutas

1.3.3 Bhavas

bhava == 'house' and can be found from *several* reference points.

If no reference point is specified, ascendant is the lagna.

1.3.4 Chakras

== 'charts' Multiple Styles

1.3.5 Varga Chakras

== divisional or harmonic charts

Each divisional chart throws light on a specific area of life.
In each divisional chart we derive houses and interpret it as if it were an
independent chart.
Vedic astrology has 4 pillars - grahas, rashis, bhavas, vargas]

1.3.6 Nakshatras

360 degrees divided into 27 sections of 13 degrees 20 minutes each, assigned to a

nakshatra from Ashwini through Revathi. Each segment divided into 4 padas. Each has
a Vimshottari Lord and a Ruling Deity

For special charts like Kota Chakra or Sarvatobhadra chakras, we use 28 nakshatras,
the 28th being Abhijit.
1.3.7 Solar Calendar

In this calendar, one year = time Sun takes to move 360 degrees. one month = time
Sun takes to move 30 degrees. one day = time taken by the Sun to move exactly 1
degree.

1.3.8 Tithis and Lunar Calendar

Lunar Day = Tithi = Time taken by the moon (starting at New Moon, exact
coincidence) to move 12 degrees from the Sun('s actual position).

A lunar month consists of exactly 30 tithis.

Each month is divided into two halves, or 'pakshas'. New Moon (0 degrees between
Moon and Sun) to Full Moon (180 degrees between Moon And Sun) is the Shukla Paksha
== waxing fortnight. From Full to New Moon is the Krishna Paksha/dark fortnight.

The tithis have names. The first 14 from Shukla pratipad/prathama to Shukla
Chathurthi, then 15th is Poornima, then 16th is Krishna pratipad/prathama through
Krishna Chaturthi then Amavasya.

Each Tithi has a planet as lord. E.g Amavasya has Rahu and Paurnami has Saturn.

The Lunar Months have names depending on the rashi in which the New Moon happens.
So for e.g if the New Moon happens in Pisces, the month is Chaitra.

If two successive New Moons happen in the same sign, there are two months with the
same names - nija Jyeshta, and adhika Jyeshta as an example.

1.3.9 Solilunar Yogas

Add Sun and Moon longitudes. Divide by 360 if necessary. Divide by 13 20 . Add 1 to
the integer part. Corresponding to this number is a 'yoga' and asymbol.

Interpretation of these yogas is not given.

1.3.10 Karanas

a vague divisiono of Tithis. Don't see the interpretative significance. Skipped.

1.3.11 Hora

A 1/24th division of the time period between two sunrise. *Roughly* equivalent to
an hour.
First hora of a day is ruled by the 'day lord' (Moon for Monday etc). then the
planets in 'day order' rule each succeeding hora.

1.3.12 Panchanga

an almanac, which gives, for every day at a particular location, the planetary
positions and (start and end of) the 'five limbs' - tithi, vaara, nakshatra, yoga,
karana.

1.3.13 Ayanamsha

In this book, Chitrapaksha Lahiri

1.4 Dasha
systems divide a native's life into periods, sub periods, sub sub periods etc.
Each of these intervals of time has a (depending on the dasha system) a planetary
lord, or a rashi as lord. Dashas/Mahadashas(MD), antardashas (AD), pratyandardashas
(PD) etc.

1.5 Conclusions
Don't bring Western Concepts, progressions, extra-Saturnine planets etc into the
analysis.

Chapter 03. Planets

3.1 Introduction
Rashis represent situations that develop (== houses?) in one's life and influences
(?) that enter one's life.
Planets represent people in one's life (!!)

3.2 Characteristics of Planets

3.2.1 Vishnu Avataras

The Zodiac as a whole represents Vishnu (?) and the Rashis his limbs (?). Each
planet represents one of his avataras.
Matsya - Ketu
Koorma - Saturn
Varaha - Rahu
Narasimha - Mars
Vamana - Jupiter
Parashurama - Venus
Rama - Sun
Krishna - Moon
Buddha - Mercury (very dubious?)

3.2.2 Benefics And Malefics

Jupiter and Venus are the natural benefics (saumya/shubha grahas)

Mercury is a benefic when he is alone or with natural benefics
Waxing Moon is a benefic

Sun, Mars, Rahu and Ketu are natural malefics.

Mercury is a malefic when he is with other malefics.
Waning Moon is a malefic.

Planets give results based on their inherent nature.

3.2.3 Governors

Sun governs soul.

Moon governs mind.
Mars governs strength (will?)
Mercury governs speech

Venus governs potency.
Saturn governs grief.

3.2.4 Colors
Sun - blood red
Moon - tawny
Mars - blood red
Mercury - grass green
Jupiter - tawny
Venus - variegated

Shudra: Saturn

3.2.10 Gunas
Sattwa: Sun, Moon, Juptire
Rajas: Moon, Mercury
Tamas: Saturn, Mars

PVR distinguishes Sattwa from 'good'. In his view

sattwa = doing things dispassionately. You can fight and kill and still be sattwic
rajas = doing things out of passion
tamas = doing things out of meanness, and wickedness

3.2.11 Abodes

Sun - Temple
Moon - Watery Place
Mars - not given!
Mercury - sports ground
Venus - Bedroom
Saturn - 'filthy area'
3.2.12 Seven Dhaatus

Dhaatu = Metals and Minerals - Rahu, Mars, Saturn, Moon
Moolas = Roots and Vegetables - Sun, Venus
Jeevas = Living Beings - Jupiter, Ketu

3.3 Planetary Dignities

3 types of dignities - owning a sign, exaltation/debelitation in signs, moola

trikona

Sun - owns Leo, exalted in Aries (max 10 degrees), debilitated in Libra (max 10
degrees0, moola trikona 0 - 20 degrees Leo
Moon -owns Cancer, exalted in Taurus (max 3 degrees), debilitated in Scorpio (max
at 3 degrees), moola trikona 3 to 27 degrees Taurus.
Mars - owns Aries and Scorpio, exalted in Capricorn (max at 28 degrees), moola
trikona from 0 to 12 degrees Aries
Mercury - owns Gemini and Virgo, exalted in Virgo (max at 15 degrees), debilitated
in Pisces (15 degrees) moola trikona at 15 to 20 Virgo (note narrow band)
Venus - owns Taurus and Libra, exalted in Pisces (max at 27 degrees), debilitated
in Virgo (max at 27 degrees), moola Trikona at 0 to 15 Libra
Jupiter - owns Sagittarius and Pisces, exalted in Cancer (max at 5 degrees),
debilitated in Capricorn (max at 5 degrees) moola Trikona at 0 to 10 degrees
Sagittarius
Saturn - owns Capricorn and Aquarius, exalted in Libra (max at 20 degrees),
debilitated in Aquarius (max at 20 degrees) moola Trikona at 0 to 20 degrees
Aquarius.

Rahu - owns Aquarius, exalted in Gemini, debilitated in Sagittarius, moola trikona

in Virgo (!)
Ketu - own Scorpio, exalted in Sagittarius, debilitated in Gemini, moola trikona
in Pisces (!)

PVR's analogy: owned == "at home". exalted = excited, debilitated = depressed,

moola trikona == 'office' (!!!)

Basic idea == understand the differences in the mood of planets between being in
their exaltation, debilitation, own house and moola trikona. All (except
debilitation) are good positions.

3.4 Planetary Relationships

3.4.1 Natural Relationships
Take the Moola trikona of the planet.
The *lords* of 2nd,12th, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th are friends (EDIT: *and* exaltation
lord, which is how Saturn becomes a permanent neutral for Mars with MT = Aries)

The others == lord of 3d, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th are enemies.
If a planet is friend by ownership of one sign (OR Exaltation), but enemy by
ownership of another sign, he is a neutral.

Eg: Sun
MT in Leo.
So lords of 2nd(Virgo, Mercury), 12th(Cancer, Moon), 4th(Scorpio, Mars), 5th (Sag,
Jupiter) 8th (Pisces, Jupiter) 9th (Mars) are friends
lords of 3d(Libra, Venus), 6th(Capricorn, Saturn), 7th (Capricorn, Saturn), 10th
(Taurus, Venus), 11th (Gemini, Mercury) are enemies
Mars is Lord of Exaltiotn

Mercury is both friend (2nd, Virgo) and enemy (11th, Gemini) so he becomes neutral.
So we have for Sun, *friends* - Moon, Mars, Jupiter. Neutral- Mercury. Enemy: Venus
and Saturn

(Note to self: If you know for each sign, which houses each planet rules, this is
easy. And this is valuable knowledge in itself, for basic chart analysis say)

Note: VDiCara interprets this as friendship *to*. So the Sun is a friend TO Mars,
Jupiter, Mercury
is neutral TO Mercury
is enemy TO Venus and Saturn

I don't think this is right. The "adhimitra" rashi etc is where the the planet
gains strength. This means that the rashi owner must BE a friend.

e.g in my chart Moon is in Libra, with Venus in Aquarius

so for Moon, Venus is neutral by permanent relationship (Moon has Sun and Mercury
as friends), and enemy by temporary (since in 5th from Moon), so overall Venus is
enemy to Moon, so Moon is in shatru rashi.

For Mercury, Jupiter is neutral permanently. In the same house temporarily (so
enemy). So overall in my chart, Jupiter is enemy to Mercury, so Mercury's position
in Sagittarius is in shatru rashi.

E.g:
Take a moola trikona sign (note that with Rahu and Ketu, 9 of 12 signs are Moola
Trikona signs. Only Gemini, Cancer, Scorpio are left out)
say Virgo: (MT sign for Mercury)
Sun rules the 12th
Moon rules the 11th
Mars rules the 3d and 8th
Mercury rules the 1st and 10th
Jupiter rules the 4th and 7th
Venus rules the 2nd and 9th
Saturn rules 5th and 6th

Now for Mercury:

Sun rules 12th so natural friend
Moon rules 11th so natural enemy
Mars rules 3nd(enemy) and 8th(friend), so neutral
Jupiter rules 4th (Friend) and 7th (enemy), so neutral
Venus rules 2nd (Friend) and 9th (friend), so friend
Saturn rules 5th (Friend) and 6th (Enemy), so neutral

so overall
Friends: = Sun, Venus
Neutral: = Mars, Saturn and Jupiter
Enemy: Moon

For Moon:
MT Sign = Taurus

For Taurus:
Sun rules 4th so natural friend
Moon rules 3d so natural enemy(!)
Mars rules 12th (friend) and 7th (enemy) so neutral
Mercury rules 2nd(friend) and 5th(friend) so friend
Jupiter rules 11th(enemy) and 8th (enemy) so neutral
Venus rules 1st (friend?) and 6th (enemy?) so neutral
Saturn rules 9th(friend) and 10th (enemy) so neutral
So overall, for Moon
Friends = Sun,Mercury,
Neutral = Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn
Enemy = Moon? (Self enemy!!) EDIT:Added 3d March 2018. Moon is exalted in Taurus,
so friend to itself

Aries
Sun rules the 5th
Moon rules the 4th
Mars rules the 1st and 8th
Mercury rules the 3d and 6th
Jupiter rules the 9th or 12th
Venus rules the 2nd and 7th
Saturn rules the 10th and 11th

So overall for Mars (who has MT in Aries)

Sun is a friend(5th)
Moon is a friend(4th)
Mercury is an enemy (by 3d)and enemy (by 6th)
Jupiter is a friend (by 9th) and a friend (by 9th)
Venus is a friend(by 2nd) and an enemy (by 7th) so neutral
Saturn is an enemy(by 10th) and an enemy(by 11th) *edit added on March 3 2018:
Saturn is Lord of Exaltation of Mars so friend)

Hmm the PVR table shows Saturn to be neutral! (how is this? Saturn rules the 10th
and 11th from Aries!)

EDIT: Added 3d March 2018 from Vic Di Cara's site

trikoṇāt svāt sukha-svānt- adhī-dharmāyuḥ-svatuñgayāḥ
suhṛdo ripavaś cānye samāś cobhaya lakṣaṇāḥ

“From the 4th, 2nd, 12th, 5th, 9th and 8th from its own trikona *and exaltation*
[come] friends. Enemies [come] from elsewhere. Those who have both characteristics
are neutral.”

So in addition to the above Saturn is a friend, since lord of exaltations.

So wrt Mars, Saturn rules 10th (enemy) 11th (enemy) and is Lord Of Exaltation (so
neutral)

MasterTable of friends, neutral, enemy

Sun: [Moon, Mars,Jupiter],[Mercury],[Venus and Saturn]

Moon: [Sun, Mercury],[],[Mars,Venus,Jupiter,Saturn]
Mars: [Sun,Moon,Jupiter],[Venus],[Mercury,Saturn]
Mercury:[Sun,Venus],[Mars,Saturn,Jupiter],[Moon]
Venus:
Jupiter:
Saturn:

(There seems to be some confusion about unsymmetric relationships.

e.g: From the Sun, Mercury is neutral. From Mercury, Sun is a friend.
EDIT: As per VicDiCara Sun is neutral TO mercuy, Mercury is friendly TO Sun.

So, is Sun a real friend *of* Mercury, or does Mercury happen to *think* Sun is a
friend?
My answer: Since Mercury in Leo is considered strong, Sun *is* a friend, since his
house provides actual benefits. (? where does 'Mercury in Leo is considered strong'
com from?)

3.4.2 Temporary Relationships

3.4.3 Compound Relationships

3.5 Answers to Exercises

At this point, treating 'natural relationships' as a given to be memorized and

going on to the next chapter.

Chapter 4 Upagrahas

11 mathematical point

grouped into two

sun based upagrahas, calculated from the Sun's longitude

1. Dhuma
2. Vyatipaata
3. Parivesha
4. Indrachaapa
5. Upaketu

difficult to compute
6. Kaala - malefic, comparable to Sun
7. Mrityu - similar to Mars
8. ArthaPrahaara - similar to Mercury
9. Yamaghantaka - similar to Jupiter
10. Gulika - Similar to Saturn
11. Maandi - Similar to Saturn

Day (sunrise to sunset) and Night(sunset to sunrise) are divided into 8 equal
parts.
Then each part is assigned to a planetary lord, with some parts being lordless.

The above upagrahaas from 6 thru 11, 'rise' in the middle of certain parts above
(and so get assigned to specific signs?)

Chapter 5 Special Lagnas

Bhava Lagna: Where the Sun is at sunrise. This moves at the rate of one rashi per
two hours. This is only included for completeness, and we don't use it further in
this book.

Hora Lagna and Ghati Lagna

Both are positions of the Sun at sunrise but differ in rate of change.
HL moves one rasi per hora.
GL moves one rasi per ghati

For now
normal lagna shows the self (in any chart)
HL shows shows self from pov of money, wealth prosperity
GL shows self from pov of power, authority, fame

Chapter 6 Divisional Charts

Each Rashi is divided into n parts. Each part is then mapped to a (different)
rashi, via some scheme. So the planets in the 1/n th part in the original rashi end
up in a different rashi in the n-divisional chart.

Each divisonal chart represents an area of life and can be interpreted separately.

E.g: D3 Drekkana chart

Each rashi is divided into 3. The first third is mapped to the Rashi itself.
The second third is mapped to the 5th rashi from the one under consideration.
The last third is mapped to the 9th rashi under consideration.

Eg: Gemini
1st drekkana (decan) is mapped to itself.
2nd decan is mapped to Libra.
3d decan is mapped to Aquarius. (note, all air signs).

So if Mercury is at 3 degrees Gemini, Jupiter at 19 degrees, Venus at 21

In the Drekkana chart, Mercury will be in Gemini, Jupiter in Libra , and Venus in
Aquarius (how to get exact degree positions? possible answer, by ratio of the
division already 'passed', project to sign. Test this)

6.5 Using Divisional Charts

Choose the divisional chart to analyze depending on the area of life looked at.
Decide which rashis, houses and planets (universally) denote that area.
Look at the corresponding divisional chart.

E.g: Foreign Travel:

Divisional Chart: D4
Foreign Residence Houses: 9th and 12th
Planet: Rahu (possibly Jupiter?)

Now look for connections of these *in the divisional chart*.

e.g: Rahu in 9th or 12th indicates possible foreign travel, possibly in the period
(subperiod?) of Rahu, Lord of 9th, or (lord of) 12th house.

e.g: When looking for timing of a promotion,

chart D10
factors: Arudha Lagna: "status" (?), Ghati Lagna - authority, power

so in the example if the Lord of AL is in 10th *from AL* and aspect GL, it possible
indicates a promotion.

Chapter 7 Houses

7.1 Introduction

essentially use WSH

The key difference with *Western* WSH is that WSH can be taken from *any* reference
point - ascendant, LoA, Sun, Moon etc.

Each reference point (A, LoA, Sun, Moon etc) throws light on matters of a different
nature, and that colors the meaning of the house.

Thus 11th house from ascendant means something, and the 11th from the Arudha Lagna
means something else.
The 11th house's meaning depends on what is shown *by the reference point*.
An additional coloration to the house meaning comes from the 'divisional nature' of
the chart. So the 4th house in the divisional 9th chart means something different
from the 4th house in the rashi chart.

7.2 : Basic meanings of the houses + 'rotating the chart' - 4th is 2nd from 3d so
could mean brother's wealth etc.

7.3

Basic Idea: Each house has many significations.

Picking the right signification in a particular experience requires analysis.

NSR's basic idea is that a divisional chart helps narrow down the required meaning
(from many belonging to one house).
e.g: 4th house = education, vehicle, house, mother (among other things).

D12 shows parents- So 4th house in D12 shows mother

D4 shows ?? = 4th house in D4 shows immovable property
D24 shows educations - So 4th house in D24 shows education (then what does the
lagna in D24 show? Possible answer: the 'education self' (!)

7.3.1

These parts seem to be about selecting the right reference point.

The default lagna is about the 'true self'. Some confused theology here.

7.3.2
Chandra Lagna - 'from the perspective of the mind'
e.g 10 th house. Someone with a routine job but which he actively engages in,
mentally.
10th from lagna shows a Saturnian influence.
10th from Chandra shows a Martian influence.

7.3.3
Sun lagna: shows houses 'from the perspective of the soul' . Also physical
vitality. No examples.

7. 3.4
Arudha Lagna: the self as perceived 'by the world'.

7.3.5 Paaka Lagna == treating LoA as a reference point.

'physical self'. again no examples.

A somewhat unclear example of when to use which lagna.

PVR says that 5th house is about memory, scholarship, memory, success in
competition etc.

Success in competitions is about how the world sees you, so best seen from Arudha
Lagna.

Scholarship is about one's "conceptual self" so seen from (normal) lagna's 5th.

None of this is very coherent. skipped.

7.4 Special Categories

1-5-9 konas
1-4-7-10 kendras
2-5-8-11 panapharas
3-6-9-12 apoklimas

3-6-10-11 upachayas
6-8-12 trik/du sthanas
4-8 chaturashras

These can be taken from any reference point.

Chapter 8 Kaarakas

Kaaraka == "one who causes"

3 types
Naisargika, Sthira, Chara

These are essentially schemes significations attributed to planets, with some vague
philosophical justifications.

8.1 Chara Kaarakas

These
'show people who play a role in one's life'
'show how our karma is carried from one life to another' (!!!)

Procedure.
Arrange seven planets + Rahu in decreasing order of progress within their signs

then most progressed planet is the "aatmakaraka"

second is the 'amatyakaaraka'
third. Bhratri
Matri
Pitri
Putra
Jnaati
Daara

The Aatmakaaraka represents the native for purposes of raja yogas, analysis of
sustenance, achievements, spiritual evolution.
Throws light on the inner self.

Take strength of the planets into account. A strong Rahu as atmakaaraka can show a
spiritually advanced person. Weak, an outcast and revolutionary(note to self:
beware underlying philosophy). A strong Mercury as Amaatyakaaraka shows
intellectual counselors, when weak, indecisive people

Naisargika kaarakas == Universal Significators

First House From Sun: Self, Physical Constitution, Soul, Health

Second House From Jupiter: Family, Wealth
Third House From Mars: Younger Siblings, Courage
Fourth House From Moon: Mother
Fifth House From Jupiter: Children

Eleventh House From Jupiter: Elder Siblings
Twelfth House From Saturn: Losses

The more traditional types of universal significations

Sun: Soul, Constitution, Self, health (1st from Sun), fame, power(5th), father,
boss (9th)
Moon: Mind (1st), Mother, Peace of Mind(4th), Friends (11th)

hospitalization(12th)
Rahu: Accidents (6th), occult knowledge(8th), pilgrimages, going abroad(9th)
Ketu: Occult Knowledge, pilgrimages, going abroad (9th), moksha (12th)

Chapter 9 Arudha Padas:

Lagna shows true self. But this may be different from what a person is *perceived*
as.

e.g: A political leader perceived as powerful can be 'internally' fearful and full
of doubt.

(key): perceptions *and* reality are important to an astrologer. To predict matters

that have a "as seen by the world" aspect (e.g promotion), the astrologer needs
arudha padas. To predict matters related to the true self(e.g?) we use the lagna

9.2 Computation of Arudha Pada

For each house count (by sign, in zodiacal order) from the house to the lord. Then
count the same number of signs *from* the lord.
E.g: Virgo rising with Venus in Pisces
The 2nd house's (Libra's) arudha pada (A2) is computed thus.
From Libra to Pisces is 6 signs. 6 from Pisces gives Leo. This is A2.

Some refinements
1. If Arudha is 1st or 7th from a house, take the 10th from the end point of the
'n-th from n-th' process (in essence, from the original house)
2. Aquarius and Scorpio have two owners (Saturn and Rahu, Mars and Ketu). To count
'to the lord', use whichever is stronger.

9.3 Use of Arudha Lagna

Lagna shows true self. Arudha Lagna shows the 'societal perception' of the self
(and is thus 'maya').
Since the AL is associated with Maya, it is very important in judging several
material things.

e.g: 11th and 12th from AL show financial gains and expenditures,by Parashara and
Jaimini. (how is this different from 11th and 12th from *lagna*?)

Natural malefics in 3d and 6th from AL shows someone who is *perceived* as a bold
person who tackles his enemies ruthlessly (6th is fine, but 3d?)
Such impressions are usually formed about materially successful people, these
indicate material success.

Similarly natural benefics in 3d and 6th from AL usually show gentle and restrained
behavior, and often saints or spiritually evolved people.

e.g: 10th from Lagna *in D10* shows the true nature of one's work in society. The
tenth house from AL in D10 shows *perceptions* about one's work and so 'status at
work'.

(note to self: none of this seems to work, my AL is in Virgo. Umm EDIT: No, it is
in Pisces, with Mars in it. *could* work).

[From PVR post on the mailing list]

0.The fifth from any reference point refers to 'abilities and potential' wrt that
reference point, and contextualized by the area of life indicated by that
divisional chart.

1. Lagna represents the true self. So 5th from lagna shows the true abilities and
potential of the true self.

2. AL shows the 'manifest image' of the true self == perceived self. 5th from AL
shows abilities and potential of the perceived self , i.e the *perceived* abilities
and potential of the native.

3. The Arudha of the 5th *house* (A5) shows the material manifestation of things
that reflect abilities and potential (e.g: awards)

4. The influence of the graha arudhas (vs grahas ) on the 5th from lagna show what
the native thinks of his abilities and potential (??)

PVR shows a bunch of examples. The big problem here is that the difference in
taking Arudha Lagna from a rashi chart vs from a divisional chart is not clearly
explained here. He *seems* to use the Divisonal chart primarily, to examine matters
relating to a life area, so confines the use of AL, n-th house from AL etc to that
divisional chart. Not sure how/if this can be used for analysis of rashi chart

prep: houses and arudha padas in divisonal charts

H1 actual self

H3 'boldness' (among others)

H4 vehicles (among others)

H7 Relations

A1 'maya' self / perceived self

A3

A4 'perceived' (status of) vehicles (s.a : the 'manifestation' of vehicles)

A7 maya/perceptions associated with relations.

D10 Work
(this is a bit strained, since it shows D10-H10 to be the 'place of work' which
should be D10-H4 ,and D10-A10 to be 'perceived place of work' and with Jupiter in
D10-A10 == works at university etc . So perhaps it makes sense to just keep these
places orthogonal. First find out what H_n means- easy for rashi, not listed for
other charts - and keep A10 as the 'externally perceived' aspect and work off that.

H5 = "Following one has"

D16 Vehicles
4th house = true happiness with vehicle(?? I'd have thought environments
connected to vehicles)
A4 = perceived happiness with vehicles. Influence by benefics = perceived to be
happy with vehicles. So benefics in A4 (in D16) == owner of a 'good' (as perceived
by society) vehicle
Saturn in 4th, Venus in A4 - perceived to be very happy with his vehicle (so
has a Benz, say) vs *actually* being unhappy (Saturn in actual 4th)
Venus and Jupiter in 4th , Saturn in A4 = perceived to be unhappy (rickety
cycle, or no vehicle) but actually happy with this

D20 - Religious Activities

H5 - shows devotion/following etc
A5 - material manifestation of H5 - mantras recited, ceremonies performed etc

D24
deals with education
H4 in D24 - the environment of learning.so university, or college
A4 in D24 - the *perceived* (ranking of?) one's educational environment.
H9 in D24 - 'fortune' related to learning.
A9 in D24 - material manifestations of (perceptions of) 'fortune in learning'.
Advanced degrees. (generalizing: what *materially* shows 'fortune in education'

So the confusion is about the difference between Rashi and D-n chart and the
relation between H_n and A_n.
The latter is the artha-vag /essence-manifestation difference. So far so good.
PVR mentions in his lectures that Rashi is also somehow about the physical
manifestation. This is confusing. Ignore the rashi-D_n difference and arudha pada
is clear, just remember vag-artha. Manifestation more than perception.

Upapaada lagna = AP of the 12th house - so material manifestation of the 12th

house?
"marriage and spouse"
"The planets in the UL show what kind of marriage one has and what kind of spouse
one gets" (surely this should be the marriage and spouse one is *seen* to have?)
e.g Mercury shows intellectual (when good), indecisive (when bad) etc. 8th from UL
shows longevity of marriage, 2nd and 7th show end of marriage.

Computation of Graha Arudha

Count from the planet to the stronger sign owned by it.(1)

Count as many from the sign in the zodiacal direction.

E.g Sun in Sagittarius. Count 9 to get to Leo. Count 9 from Leo, giving Aries.
E.g: Moon in Libra. Count 10 to get to Cancer. From Cancer count 10 giving Aries

(1) Calculation of sign strength tbd

The interpretation of a graha arudha is about the native's own illusions about the
matters signified by the planets.
The planets represent forces, situations or people that impact a person's life.
The G*Arudha* shows how the person perceives them.

e.g: Vajpayee's chart.

Lagna: Scorpio, with Mercury and Saturn. Mars in Aries in the 6th
AL: Capricorn (note: Lagna to *Ketu*, not Mars)

Jupiter is a functional benefic (? rules 2nd and 5th?) in a kendra (4th)

Sagittarius is taken as the 'stronger sign' of Jupiter. So Jupiter's Arudha Padha

(Sag is 11th from Jup in Aqu, so arudha pada of Jupiter is in 11th from Sag) is in
Libra, the natal 12th.

so by virtue of Jupiter as func. ben + rules 2nd and 5th, should give material
success.
In Rahu subdasa of Jupiter MD, he became PM of India.
Rahu is in Gemini, 8th from Lagna, 6th from AL. Malefic in 6th from AL gives
(apparent?) victory over enemies. Rahu's AP is in Libra, (Note Jupiter *and* Rahu's
G.AP are in 12th from Lagna) . So this period will be *felt* by native as 12th
house flavored - frustrating, isolated, imprisoned etc. But from a material
perspective Ketu in 6th from AL assures material success.

(this stuff remains confusing)

1. Judging the planets (and houses?) from the perspective of the lagna we
understand the real situation.
2. Judging the planets (and houses?) from the AL we understand the perception of
'the world', and the situation on a materialistic level.

3. Judging the arudha padas of the planets (and houses) with respect to the lagne
we understand what the native perceives and feels.

Chapter 10 Aspects And Argalas

Planets aspect rasis, houses, and planets (in general anything located in the
zodiac wheel?)

There are two kinds of drishtis - graha drishit and rashi drishtis (signs aspect
each other and planet aspect the rashis aspected by the rashi they occupy)

10.2 Graha Drishti

1. Every planet aspects the 7th sign from its location
2. Saturn aspects the 3d and 9th.
3. Mars aspects 4th and 10th.

10.3 Rashi Drishti

Every movable rashi aspects all fixed rashi's except the one adjacent to it.
Every fixed rashi aspects all movable rashis except the one adjacent to it.
Every dual rashi aspects all other dual rashis.
Planets in a rashi partake of that rashi's drishti.

10.5 Argala (Intervention)

Argala = "bolt" - an influence that intervene in a house's affairs, decide some

parts of it and close the bolt on it.
A planet in the 2nd, 4th, 11th from a house causes primary argala on it. 5th seems
to also be treated as a 'secondary' argala kaaraka.

Argala by a benefic planet is called shubhaargala. By malefics is called

"paapaargala".

Some convoluted examples. Examine tomorrow.

Planets in the 12th, 10th, 3d, 9th causes 'virodhargala' and obstruct the argala
created by planets in the 2nd, 4th, 11thand 5th *respectively*.

e.g Mercury in Gemini. Saturn in Virgo. Jupiter in Pisces. Venus in Aries.

Since Saturn is in 4th from Gemini, it has argala on it. This is a paapaargala. For
this to be cancelled, there has to be a planet in the 10h to 'virodha' it. Jupiter
is in the 10th here, so Saturn's argala is cancelled.

Venus being in the 11th from Gemini has a (shubha)argala on Gemini.

If there is no planet in the 3d from Gemini (i.e in Leo) this argala is
unobstructed.

Special Principles:
1.For a sign containing Ketu, the argalas and virodha argalas are calculated in
'reverse'. i.e count houses against the zodiacal order.
2. Multiple malefics in the 3d house (from a sign) cause argala instead of
virodhargala.

To understand/delineate argala

Argala from
2nd house shows sustaining element - 2nd house shows food, that sustains the
self(1st)
4th house shows the element that sets the mood, state and progress of a matter.
4th house shows home and comfort wrt self (1st)
11th house shows the catalyst that can result in gains for a matter.
5th house shows additional contributing factors

Chapter 11 Yogas

a list of yogas and effects. To memorize this would take a long time.

The Raja Yoga material is a bit more interesting. However to learn this one needs
to know functional benefics and malefics.

From the VA mailing list

1. The functional benefic and malefic nature of planets are determined by houses
owned. (except nodes, which have an additional factor)
2. Lords of Trines are functionally benefic
(note: any planet that owns both a quadrant and a trine is a yogakaraka)
3. Lords of Quadrants are functionally *slightly* malefic for natural benefics, and
slightly benefic for natural malefics
4. Ownership of 3d,6th and 11th is functionally malefic
5. Ownership of 2nd, 8th and 12th is functionally benefic or malefic based on the
other house owned and company

and then
6. When a functional malefic conjoins a house or its lord it gives a malefic effect
related to that house.

e.g: Leo Rises. Consider Jupiter who is with Mars

For Leo trines = Leo (Sun), Sagittarius (Jupiter), Aries(Mars)

Quadrants = Leo(Sun), Scorpio(Mars), Aquarius(Saturn) Taurus(Venus)
3d(Libra) owned by Venus, 6th (Capricorn) owned by Saturn, 11th (Gemini) owned by
Mercury
2nd (Virgo) owned by Mercury, 8th Pisces owned by Jupiter, and 12th Cancer owned by
Moon

Note: Mars is yogakaraka. Owns a trine (9th, Aries) and quadrant(4th Scorpio)

Consider Jupiter. naturally benefic

owns a trine, so functionally benefic
owns no quadrant
owns 8th - so judge by house owned and company . Hose is 8th so malefic, but
with Yogakaraka Mars, which is benefic
Overall a strong functional benefic.

If Jupiter were with Venus (owner of 3d - fmalefic, 10th slightly malefic for
benefic Venus), the last evaluation would make Jupiter strongly malefic.

Gaja Kesari Yoga

1. Jupiter is an quadrant from the Moon
2. A benefic planet conjoins or aspects Jupiter
3. Jupiter is not debilitated or combust or in an Enemy's house

famous, wealthy, intelligent, liked by kings.

Raja Yoga Basics:

1. The quadrants are ruled by Vishnu
2. The trines by Lakshmi

RY = LQ associated with LT

associated == conjoined, (mutual?) graha drishti, or parivartana

Cancer Lagna:
Quad Lords = Moon, Venus, Saturn, Mars
Trine Lords = Moon, Mars, Jupiter

So in N's chart, Venus, Jupiter parivarthana = Raja Yoga. Also Venus in 9th,
exalted, Jupiter in 11th

Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga - A special case of Raja Yoga with lords of 9th(most

important trine) and 10th (most important quadrant)

Vipareetha Raja Yoga -

The 6th, 8th and 12th are known as trik or du sthanas.
If their lords occupy or conjoin (at) dusthanas, results in VRY, and the native
experiences tremendous sucess, often after an initial struggle.
Dusthanas show obstacles faced in life. Dusthana lords in dusthanas show that
obstacles face obstacles, leading to victory despite obstacles.

Magnitude of a Raja Yoga

The conjunction of a Lord of a Quadrant and Trine can be found in many charts (and
thus is a raja yoga). How much this Raja Yoga manifests depends on the strength of
the two planets.

Specifically,

1. The two planets should be free of affliction from *functional* malefics.

2. The conjunction or aspect responsible for the RY should be close, say within 6
degrees or so.

The Two Planets should not be combust, debilitated, or in bad avasthas.

Parashara reccomends counting the number of times a planet is in it's owned,

exaltation, or moolatrikona signs. Higher number confers > potency.

Dhana Yogas Basic Principle:

Lords of 5th and 9th and planets joining them are capable of granting wealth, with
results in their dashas.

Lists Of Yogas. How to memorize? (1) memorize 1 per day, build up a corpus. Test on
every chart. (2) write a program to detect.

Chapter 12: Ashtakavarga

Basics:
Each planet P (and also lagna) has a table with the houses as rows (X) and other
planets as columns(Y).
A 1 in a cell X, Y means that placement of the planet P in house X with reference
to planet Y is beneficial. A 0 shows malefic placement.

e.g Is Mercury in the same sign as Jupiter well placed? Take the 'placed planet'
(here Mercury) AV table. Look at the cell value for X = 1(st house) and Y =
Jupiter. The value is 0. So Mercury is not well placed in the 1st house from
Jupiter.

(Note: Sun's AV chart has differing numbers for various rows in the *Sun* column.
Which is difficult to interpret as per the above principle. one possible
explanation is the Sun in one chart is being compared with the Sun in another
chart.)

So given Venus in Gemini, where is Jupiter well placed?

Look at the Jupiter (i.e the 'placed planet') AV Table. Take the Venus Column. This
gives the benefic/malefic nature of placing Jupiter in the n-th house *from* Venus.
The 2nd, 5th, 6th, 9th, 10th, 11th have value 1. So if Jupiter is in these houses
from Venus, that is a benefic placement. Siince in the example, Venus is in Gemini,
Jupiter would be well placed in Cancer, Libra, Scorpio, Aquarius, Pisces, and
Aries.

Bhinna Ashtakavarga (BAV) - BAV is calculated for a planet P. given a chart, for a
rashi, the number of references (7 planets + lagna, not including Rahu/Ketu) from
which that planet P is benefical in that rashi. Maximum 8, minimum 0.
so if a planet has > 4 references, it means that the planet in that rashi is more
beneficial than malefic.
If a planet has < 4 references, it means that the planet in that rashi is more
malefic than beneficient.

Worked Example:
For my chart, calculate BAV for Sun
iow we are calculating, per rashi, from how many references Sun in that rashi would
be beneficial. I can see this as the 'transit effect' of the Sun when in that
rashi.
The 'placed planet' is the Sun, so we start from there.
Look at say Sagittarius. Take the Sun table
From Sun, this is the 1st house. From the Sun Table, Sun column, 1st House, +1
From Moon, this is the 3nd house. From Sun Table, Moon Column, 3d house row, +1
From Mars, this is the 10th house. Sun Table, Mars Column, 10th house row, +1
From Mercury, this is the 1st house. Sun Table, Mercury Column, 1st house row, 0
From Jupiter, this is the 1st house, Sun Table, Jupiter Column, 1st House row, 0
From Venus, this is the 11th House, Sun Table, Venus Column, 11th House row, 0
From Saturn, this is the 8th house. Sun Table, Saturn Column, 8th House row +1
From Lagna, this is the 7th House. Sun Table, Lagna Column, 7th House row 0

So total BAV (Sun, Moon, Mars, Saturn) = +4

Check with JH = 4

One More
BAV for Sun, in Leo

From Sun, this is the 9th House. From Sun Table, Sun Column 9th House row , +1
From Moon, this is the 11th House. From Sun Table, Moon Column, 11th House Row +1
From Mars, this is the 6th House. From Sun Table, Mars Column, 6th House Row 0
From Mercury this is the 9th House. From Sun Table, Mercury Column, 9th House row
+1
From Jupiter this is the 9th House. From Sun Table, Jupiter Column, 9th House row
+1
From Saturn this is the 4th House. From Sun Table, Saturt Column, 4th House row +1
From Venus this is the 7th House. From Sun Table, Venus Column, 7th House row +1
From Lagna this is the 3d House. From Sun Table, Lagna Column, 3d House row +1

So BAV for Sun in Leo = +7 (so extraordinarily beneficial when Sun is in Leo? by
transit. )

In the example, the BAV of (ex PM) Narasimha Rao's Mercury (LoA) is examined and
found that the AV shows the actual placement of Me is in a rashi with score of +7.
In addition to a yoga, this shows a very powerful Mercury. So not just by transit,
but also for examining the natal placements.

Samudaya Ashtavarga

is the sum of the BAV for all the7 planets (NOT including lagna). So 'score'
varies from 0 to 56.
A rashi with a SAV > 30 is considered strong. 25 - 30 is average. Below 25 is weak.
When selecting a Muhurta try to get one where Sun, Moon and lagna are in rashis
with > 30 'points' in the SAV of the *natal chart*.

BAV and SAV can be created (in exactly the same way as above) for the divisional
charts too.

Prastaara Ashtakavarga shows , for a given rashi (and a chart), for a planet,
*which reference points* give a positive 'tick'.
sodya pinda etc skipped. Will revisit when necessary to use.

(Elsewhere PVR looks at a different way of calculating SAV and BAV for Bill Gates.
Look up)
