Activity Schedule Rationale

For this assignment, I have chosen to create an activity schedule designed for a student in my hypothetical 15:1 classroom, an
th
8 grader who has been diagnosed with Autism (ASD) and a Learning Disability in reading. I had the pleasure of working with this
student during his 7th grade school year and based on those experiences and observations, I know that he is highly functional and is
able to complete consecutive assignments in subjects such as science and math before receiving a break. Taking into consideration the
student’s reading disability, the eighth-grade activities that contain reading passages’ word level, not content, have been modified to a
reading level four, as indicated in his IEP. He also benefits from an activity schedule that is clear, organized, and static, so each of his
assignments are on their own page. The classroom schedule is very structured and routine but he is given choices within the activity
schedule (during his scheduled breaks) so that he is making independent choices as well. The specific activities chosen for the first
break are activities the student positively engages in, which increase his participation and completion of difficult assignments. The
first break is used as a motivator for the student so that he completes his math, a subject he somewhat struggles with. After history,
and if his three assignments have been completed, he enjoys free time, which consists of his most favorite activities (i.e. Rewards).

Assessment Tool

Within the student’s activity schedule is a system for checking the student’s completion of the assignments. Instead of having a
third box in the schedule where a self-assessment check-mark may go, I have provided for him another method of self-assessment that
provides differentiation. I have created a ticket system, in which the student will obtain a “Free Time Freebies” ticket after the
completion of each assignment (three in total). Thus, in order to move on to the next assignment, the student must obtain a “Free Time
Freebies” ticket from me. After the assignments have been completed and placed back into the bin, the student will redeem the three
“Free Time Freebies” tickets and has a choice of three reward activities to engage in: listen to music, time on the Chromebook, or
draw. With regard to a teacher’s assessment of task completion, a check system will be used. This check system is very simple but for
activities that delve deeper into topics, a more specialized tool/checklist will need to be created. Often, the schedule will be created
anew for the following day as this student is capable of completing the assignments chosen for him, but if for any reason something is
left incomplete, time will be made on the following day’s schedule to complete them.

*Remember, each “Free Time Freebies” tells me you have completed your work. Three “Free Time
Freebies” gives you free time to listen to music, play on your chrome book, or draw.

Common Core Alignment

Science

CCSS Science MS-ESS2-5: Student will identify interactions of air masses, the role of water in Earth’s surface processes (ocean temperatures,
winds, and currents), and collect data from reading as evidence to to answer the questions in the corresponding assignment. Student will also identify
cause and affect between ocean temperature, winds, etc. and hurricanes.

Social Studies

*Remember, each “Free Time Freebies” tells me you have completed your work. Three “Free Time
Freebies” gives you free time to listen to music, play on your chrome book, or draw.
CCSS SS 8.1: Civil War (Reconstruction) - student will use comprehension skills to answer questions based off the readings, demonstrate an
understanding of the major ideas within the reading passage, and identify key points. Student will also use context of words to determine the
definition of the words provided in a word bank.

Math

CCSS Math 8.EE: Plot ordered pairs (coordinates) on a grid. Determine whether the line from the first set of coordinates would intersect the line
from the second set of coordinates

CCSS Math 8.F: Plot ordered pairs to create a function. Eventually works towards determining the rate of change and initial value of the function
from the (x,y) values. Student should be able to plot points from an (x,y) table.

CCSS Math 8.G: Student should be able to plot ordered pairs and identify the geometric shape or shapes.
