A trade-off exists when an organisation cannot perform simultaneously on two performance

dimensions: in order to increase performance on one performance dimension it has to decrease

performance on the other dimension. The concept of a strategic trade-off has been a
controversial issue in operations management.
Strategic fit means that both the competitive andsupply chain strategies have the same goal.
It refers to consistency between the customer priorities that the competitive strategy hopes to
satisfy and thesupply chain capabilities that the supply chain strategy aims to build
Strategic fit expresses the degree to which an organization is matching its resources and
capabilities with the opportunities in the external environment. The matching takes place
through strategy and it is therefore vital that the company has the actual resources and
capabilities to execute and support the strategy.
A contingency plan is a plan devised for an outcome other than in the usual (expected) plan.
It is often used for risk management when an exceptional risk that, though unlikely, would have
catastrophic consequences. Contingency plans are often devised by governments or
businesses
A good contingency plan should include any event that might disrupt operations. Here are
some specific areas to include in the plan: Natural disasters, such as hurricanes, fires, and
earthquakes. Crises, such as threatening employees or customers, on-the-job injuries, and
worksite accidents.
Structural decisions are defined as those which shape the “building blocks” of the operation;
they define its overall tangible shape and architecture. Infrastructural decisions, however,
affect the people, systems, and culture that lubricate the decision-making and control activities
of the operation.
Job Shop vs assembly line
A batch process is similar to a job shop, except that the sequence of activities tends to be in
a line and is less flexible. ... Products are produced in batches, for example, to fill specific
customer orders. A batch process executes different production runs for different products

Cellular manufacturing. ... Cellular manufacturing involves the use of multiple "cells" in
an assembly line fashion. Each of these cells is composed of one or multiple different
machines which accomplish a certain task. The product moves from one cell to the next, each
station completing part of the manufacturingprocess.
A lean method of producing similar products using cells, or groups of team members,
workstations, or equipment, to facilitate operations by eliminating setup and unneeded costs
between operations. Cells might be designed for a specific process, part, or a complete product.
Competitive priorities are the critical operational dimensions a process or supply chain must
possess to satisfy its internal or external customers, both now and in the future (Krajewski,
Ritzman, & Malhotra, 2013).
Five key competitive priorities which a company can add value to its OM decisions
including:
Cost. Quality. Delivery. Flexibility. Service.
