PART 1: CULTURAL ENERGIZER

TITLE:
STEP DESCRIPTION: TIME

1 The instructor will start class by reading a quote from the article 5 minutes
“Feast of Resistance” by Toni Osumi. The quote is as follows:

“Food is loaded with socio-political meaning. Food and foodways

– the processes surrounding its collection, preparation,
distribution, and consumption – bind individuals together, serve
as mediums of intergroup communications, signify cultural
celebrations and provide a context for performance of group
rituals. As an expression of culture, foodways act as daily

reminders of our ethnic heritages and help define the boundaries

between in-group and out-group status. More than just providing
nourishment, by playing a part in our collective experiences,
foodways have the ability to help us define and understand the
Asian American experience.

This paper will argue the importance in viewing foodways as a

tool to retain a sense of ethnic identity in face of “cultural
invasion” by mainstream ideology. It will also demonstrate how
further “cultural resistance” can be created through the conscious
use of Asian American Studies and food items to form a “Feast of
Resistance”, a communal meal used to teach Asian American
history” (p. 1).

The instructor will explain that this quote will guide the discussion
for the following two days of class.

2 After the instructor reads the quote, students will then be given 5 2 minutes
minutes to prepare themselves to give their 1-minute speeches to
class.
