FOOD AS RESISTANCE: FOOD PATHWAYS AND HOPE
DESCRIPTION: THIS LESSON PLAN WILL ALLOW STUDENTS TO REFLECT ON WHAT THEY HAVE
LEARNED THROUGH THE COURSE OF THIS UNIT. STUDETS WILL SHARE THEIR FAMILY RECIPE
LOCATING PROJECT.
GUIDING QUESTIONS: HOW IS FOOD (THE ACT OF COOKING, EATING, AND SHARING) A FORM OF
RESISTANCE? WHAT IS IT RESISTANCE TO?
PURPOSE/AIM:
• STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO OBSERVE HOW HER/HISTORY IS TRANSFERRED FROM
GENERATION TO GENERATION BY TAKING NOTES OF ORAL HER/HISTORY
PRESENTATIONS
• STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO SHARE THEIR STORIES TO CLASS THORUGH A ORAL
PRESENTATION (PUBLIC SPEAKING)
MATERIALS:
Paper
Pencils
Dry Erase Board
Dry Erase Markers
TITLE:
STEP DESCRIPTION: TIME
1 The instructor will start class by reading a quote from the article 5 minutes
“Feast of Resistance” by Toni Osumi. The quote is as follows:
The instructor will explain that this quote will guide the discussion
for the following two days of class.
2 After the instructor reads the quote, students will then be given 5 2 minutes
minutes to prepare themselves to give their 1-minute speeches to
class.

Student presentations: Summarize your experiences in a 1-minute minute
speech about your experiences from the project. Feel free to pull quotes s
that stood out during the interview, key points stated in your paper,
memorable moments, etc. You may use your written/visual reflection as a
blueprint for your oral presentation.
2 Students who are not presenting are instructed to take notes on their
classmate’s experiences. This will be turned in at the end of the class for
credit.

WRITTEN RELFECTION
STEP DESCRIPTION TIME
1 The instructor will allow time for students to reflect on their 10 minutes
discussion during the class period. Students will be give 20
minutes to free-write and answer the following questions:
1. What did you learn that you did not know before about the
person you interviewed and about food?
2. Is there any additional information or history that you would
like to know about your family and their food traditions?
3. What did you learn about yourself after completing this
project?
4. How does the food you and your family eat affect you?
Would you be a different person if you ate different food?
5. Has your perspective of your family/the person you
interviewed changed? If so, how?

What is not finished in class, may be completed for homework.
