1. Project Overview
The Kuwait Ministry of Public Works (MPW) is intending to construct a new healthcare facility called New
Maternity Hospital. The project will be constructed near the existing Maternity Hospital at Al Sabah Medical
District, Al-Shuwaikh.
The project involved parties are shown in the below table.
Project Design, Build, Furnishing, Medical Equipment and Operational
maintenance of the New Maternity Hospital
End User Ministry of Health (MOH)
Client Ministry Of Public Works (MPW)
Resident Engineer PACE
Contractor IMPRESA PIZZAROTTI & C. S.p.A.
Design Team STUDIO ALTIERI/SSH
The project is currently in Phase 3 - Design Development stage. Site construction works
(dewatering/shoring/excavation process) already started.
2. Project Description
The project will consist of the Main Hospital building (HSP) and Annex building (ANX), one Multi Storey Car
Park (CRP), Central Utility Plant (CUP) and three bridges as shown in the below.
In detail:
Here below the summary of the area analysis as per Schematic Design:

3. Project Location
As shown in Figure 2, the project site is located on the west part of Kuwait city, in the Al Sabah Medical
District, Al-Shuwaikh. The proposed project location is surrounded by the existing health facilities Children’s
Ghanima Al Ghanim Preterm, Sabah Maternity Hospital, Batoul Al Aiban Medical Records and the newly
constructed Stem Cell Hospital.
4. General
The New Maternity Project consists of no. 04 buildings and all of them have piles. Below a recap:
BUILDING NO PILES
HSP 90
CRP 38
ANX 139
CUP 43
Ground levels on site ranges from 5.5 m to 4.0 m with a slope toward the sea side. Final bottom of excavation
level is around 8/9m for all buildings. The current situation of the works is the following:
Hence for HSP, CRP, ANX piles will not be done from ground level but at a formation level close to the bottom
of excavation (around 1 – 1,5 m above).
For CUP it might be the case that we will install piles from top.
5. Design
Piles are mainly tension piles. They were introduced in all those areas where our analysis showed not contact
areas between the raft and the soil.
Piles are never located below the columns. Location and Reaction forces on piles can be taken as input data.
To be provided:
- Preliminary design of each pile type. See “Foundation Piles Design” attached (Annex III);
- Suggestions on pile mix design. Current assumption is to have a SRC K450 concrete (Annex III);
- Previous foundation piles Test results on soils similar to our project.
In the BoQ (Annex II) is assumed a typical cast in situ bored pile with polymer slurry. All supplies (steel cages,
concrete, slurry) are included, only tests are given in separate items. Type and quantity of tests to be done is
still under discussion with our consultant. Hence by now we request just unit rate prices for each test.
To be provided:
- Suggested pile technology;
- Typical test frequencies in MPW projects.
7. Planning
The aim is to allow for continuity for piles works. Current assumption is to have a production rate of no. 04-
05 completed piles per day.
To be provided:
- Installation production rate;
- Equipment to be used;
- Cutting/cleaning production rates;
- Tests duration. Including piles curing time needed before performing the test.
8. Attachments
The offer shall be based on the present Technical brief and the following attached document:
