4.2 HVDC TRANSMISSION LINES

Many classical HVDC systems use overhead transmission lines. In

most cases, this is due to very high power transmissions and long
distances, approximately 600 km or more, usually from remote power
generating stations.
HVDC is well suited for such applications, since the cost is lower than it would be for similar AC
transmissions. A DC line needs only two main conductors, while an AC line needs three, and
DC electrical losses are lower. HVDC converter stations do cost more than the AC terminal
stations, so a certain distance is required in order for an HVDC system to make economic
sense.

Long distance HVDC applications using overhead lines are found around the world, in the
PAKISTAN, USA, Canada, Brazil, China and India.

The figure below compares the Three Gorges-Shanghai power transmission as an AC and a DC
transmission system. The top line shows two 3,000 MW HVDC lines, compared to the five 500
kV AC lines (below) that would have been needed if AC transmission had been selected to
deliver the same amount of power. HVDC transmission systems clearly have far smaller
footprints than AC systems.
There are some advantages in using DC transmission system-

Only two conductor are required for DC transmission system. It is further possible to use only
one conductor of DC transmission system if earth is utilized as return path of the system.

The potential stress on the insulator of DC transmission system is about 70 % of same voltage
AC transmission system. Hence, less insulation cost is involved in DC transmission system.

Inductance, capacitance, phase displacement and surge problems can be eliminated in DC

system.

Even having these advantages in DC system, generally electrical energy is transmitted by

three(3) phase AC transmission system.

The alternating voltages can easily be stepped up and down, which is not possible in DC
transmission system.

Maintenance of AC substation is quite easy and economical compared to DC.

The transforming of power in AC electrical substation is much easier than motor-generator

sets in DC system.

In today electricity industry, in view of the liberalization and increased effects to conserve the
environment, HVDC solutions have become more desirable for the following reasons:

• Environmental advantages
• Economical (cheapest solution)
• Asynchronous interconnections
• Power flow control
• Added benefits to the transmission (stability, power quality etc.)
The HVDC Technology:

The fundamental process that occurs in an HVDC system is the conversion of electrical current
from AC to DC (rectifier) at the transmitting end, and from DC to AC (inverter) at the receiving
end. For this purpose SKECO has already achieved
three ways of conversions:
 Natural Commutated Converters
 Capacitor Commutated Converters
 Forced Commutated Converters

The Converter Stations:

The converter stations at each end are replicas of each other and therefore consists
of all the needed equipment for going from AC to DC or vice versa. SKECO has already
installed such stations and its components in its various projects, which are as follow:

 Thyristor valves
 VSC valves
 Converter Transformers
 AC Filters and Capacitor banks
 DC Filters

Overhead Line Corrosion and Detector

Causes of Conductor Corrosion

• Environmental factors such as time of wetness, industrial pollution or marine salts

present in the atmosphere
• Severe industrial pollution can sometimes corrode the outside of a conductor as well
The loss of cross-section is not usually significant. The more usual and serious form of attack is
internal corrosion.
Internal corrosion is caused by ingress of pollution and moisture to the interface between the
aluminum and steel strands.
The attack is worst on aluminum strands and invisible until the extremely advanced stages.
In advanced stages, bulging of the conductor is visible and deterioration of the mechanical
properties occurs, such as white rust.
Once breakages occur, current transfer can cause local overheating and enhanced corrosion
leading to failure.
When the breakage will occur is difficult to tell, but by using our OHLCD, detection will be done
in time and save a lot of money.
Normally these tests are recommended after 12 years.
The OHLCD sensing head is a hollow cylinder which clamps around the conductor. It contains a
field winding and a pick-up coil.
When a high frequency current is passed through the field winding it generates a magnetic field
which penetrates the conductor and induces eddy currents around individual strands.
The alternating flux induces a voltage in the pick-up coil which is processed to give an in-phase
and a quadrature output voltage, which depend on the quality of the galvanized layer.
Note: Significant loss of aluminum cross section (5%) is also detectable.
The detector equipment consists of the sensing head which is connected to a trolley housing the
measurement circuitry and distance encoder.
This assembly is moved along the conductor by a motorized tug controlled by a radio link.
A separate digital radio down link in the measuring trolley transmits the measurements and
related distance information to a ground station where it is recorded.
Groundside hardware consists of the tug controller and a ground station unit connected to a
portable PC and a chart recorder. This enables data to be simultaneously inspected and
recorded digitally while the survey is in progress.

Transmission lines are unique as they have much of their mass in a highly flexible form.
Their unique mass causes them to be very vulnerable as they are continuously exposed to the
forces of the wind.
This makes transmission lines susceptible to vibration, galloping,
or other types of movement.

VIBRATION DAMPER FOR TRANSMISSION LINE CONDUCTORS

Wind-induced vibration of overhead conductors is common worldwide and can cause conductor
fatigue near a hardware attachment.
As the need for transmission of communication signals increase, many Optical Ground
Wires(OPGW) are replacing traditional ground wires.
In the last twenty years, All Aluminum Alloy Conductors (AAAC) have been a popular choice for
overhead conductors due to advantages in both electrical and mechanical characteristics.

Unfortunately AAAC is known to be prone to Aeolian vibration.

Vibration dampers are widely used to control Aeolian vibration of the conductors and earth
wires.
The first sign of conductor damage is usually a broken strand under the hardware attachment
clamp.
Note: Conductor fatigue damage has been observed as early as 3 years after line construction.

PERIODIC MAINTENANCE/INSPECTION

Periodic maintenance is started, on a 10 years period.

10 % of the line is scheduled each year. If the line is not maintained for long time than whole
line is due for aggressive inspection and maintenance.

Ground Patrol:

A visual inspection through binocular by an experience line man is the only basic procedure to
carry out inspection for the following items.
1. Conductor and conductor joints
2. Damper, fittings, arcing horns, clamps, clevis, etc.
3. Insulators, any flash over or dust on surface
4. Grounding conductor solidarity at top and bottom

Clearance

1. Clearance of conductor above ground, road crossing, railway, river crossing

2. Clearance between conductors and phases.
Maintenace Procedures Of Transmission Line

Protective Grounding:

• One of most important step before carrying out any maintenance on electric system
• Voltage may appear at work site due to accidental act, contact with another circuit, or
magnetic induction
• A zero potential has to be maintained between work platform and working device
• Grounding wire must with-stand the system fault current as some grounding does snap
on site

Voltage Detection:
• Secondary confirmation of isolation
• Special voltage detectors are available for all type of voltage ranges (buzz and neon light
type)

HSA 194 Distance Voltage Detector

• Verifies safe isolation from supply on high-voltage overhead lines without CONTACT
• Has electronic, visual and acoustic indicator
• For nominal voltage range 110 - 380 kV / 50 Hz
