DON’T FOCUS ON YOUR CRITICS…


FOCUS ON YOUR MARKET
Your business is all about your customers, not your critics.
This article is directed to the entrepreneurs and those who aspire to become
entrepreneurs. Remember when I talked about the one potent principle that will
determine whether you’ll enjoy big success or small success: Will you play by the rules or
will you make them?
If you want small success, follow what is expected. But if you want big success, you
need to be disruptive. Show up in a way that no one has shown up before. (I need to
review this point before I go to my main message.)
When Apple brought out the iPhone for the first time, it was disruptive. No one
made phones that were that simple, sleek, and stylish.
Years later, while the iPhone stayed with “graspable” small phones—and all
competitors were following this worship of smallness, Samsung went on a different path
and produced their big phones—and they took over the market. (Actually, Samsung created
the “Phablet” market by coming out with Note.) So iPhone’s market dominance shrunk.
A few months after, Apple brought out iPhone Plus—finally entering the Phablet
market. And as I write this piece, it’s very well received. In fact, it has had more evolutions than the humans. (Writing about
technology is difficult because things change so fast. Wind direction may be different as you read this issue.)
But alas, making the rules and coming out on top has its drawbacks, and if you’re not prepared, you might slip…

There’s Always Some Who Won’t Like You

Whenever Apple or Samsung tries to create something new—and sells millions of phones and dominates the
market—they will always have people who will lambast them like they were the devil incarnate.
These critics do so for various reasons. Usually, they’re very sincere, which makes them even more adamant.
Why am I telling you this? When you break the existing rules and make new rules, you’ll have critics.
How should you respond?
Here’s my success principle for the month: Forget your critics and focus on your customer.

Listen to Your Target Market Only

After we started building Feasts around the world (285 in total now), religious people criticized us.
These people didn’t like how modern music was used, because they wanted liturgical music. They didn’t like how fun
and light and practical the preaching was, because they wanted heavy talks on doctrine, promising hellfire and brimstone
to those who disobey. They didn’t like that we held our meetings in movie houses, because R-rated movies were shown in
those places.

But every time a critic launched his attack against us, I asked myself the question: “Is this person
my target market?”
One hundred percent of the time, the answer is NO.
My target market is people who don’t go to church anymore. My target market is people who
don’t like church. My target market is people who, for one reason or another, don’t like priests. My
target market is people who have given up on their Catholic religion.
And my target market loves what we do at The Feast.
So when a religious critic sends us his criticism, we smile and throw it in the wastebasket. Reason: When you pursue
a specific market, at the same breath, you’ll offend another market.
Here’s what I discovered about critics: They’re not many, but they’re noisy.

One Exception: If Your Critics Are Your Regulators

Most Catholic bishops understand and fully support our work.


A few didn’t. They didn’t like what we were doing. They were accusing us of “stealing” people from the parishes.
I didn’t take this criticism lightly. Here’s a principle you need to remember: Disregard all criticism from people who
are not your target audience except if they’re your regulators.
As a business, your first regulators are government agencies—BIR, city government, SEC, etc.
Because we’re a Catholic ministry, we have another regulator that businesses don’t have: The Catholic hierarchy is
our regulator too.
So I had to request for meetings with the bishops concerned to explain what we do. We told them we’re not pirating
people from parishes but reaching out to people who don’t go to their parishes anymore, which is about 85 percent of
Catholics.
We began building relationships with them. (I’m happy to say that some bishops who were apprehensive about us
are now more supportive.)

Are You Ready to Be Disruptive?

I love IKEA products. Simple, stylish furniture.


I didn’t know that this was part of their story. Ingvar Kamprad, founder of IKEA, was caught in a bind. Manufacturing
costs were rising and he couldn’t keep the company afloat if adjustments were not made. In order to save money and save
his company, he had to do the unthinkable: He had to manufacture IKEA furniture in Poland.
So what’s wrong with that, you ask?
It was 1961. It was the height of the Cold War. During that era, anything from Russia, the Eastern Block, and
communism was from the devil. You don’t touch these countries with a ten-foot pole.
At that time, what Ingvar Kamprad did was heresy. But he didn’t care what other people would say about him.
Reason? Because those who criticized him weren’t his customers anyway.
This shift made IKEA huge.
Many times, IKEA was willing to be disruptive. And the company that disrupts dominates.
If your customers are criticizing you, listen to every word.
But if your non-customers are criticizing you, be polite and listen. But at the end of the day, do what your customers want.
Because success is all about focus.

Renelyn Tan-Castillejos’s TRC Story

Renelyn Tan-Castillejos works as the programs manager for World Youth Alliance (WYA), an international youth
NGO. She’s been with WYA for more than ten years now and through her role, she has traveled to Brussels, Mexico City,
Nairobi, and New York, and all over the Philippines to provide leadership training, organization development, and programs
management.
About a year ago, she joined the TrulyRichClub. She said, “I’ve always been inspired by stories of hope and
determination. Even though I’ve been working in the NGO sector for almost a decade now, there is always a part of me
that wants to be an entrepreneur myself. When I was a little girl, I used to be the cashier in my grandpa’s hardware store
and he would give me 100 pesos for one day of work. I would go to National Book Store and buy books with my salary. It
was very fulfilling for me.”
Renelyn initially joined as a Gold member. In less than a year, she
upgraded to Platinum. She continued, “I learned about Platinum membership
from my good friend, Sha Nacino. I love to learn, which is why I got interested
in TRC. Sha said that I could get a lot of inspiring stories from business people.
I was also hooked with the practical lessons I’ve learned not just from the
speakers but also the members.”
Ren also shared that she truly appreciates the TRC community because
the people are business practitioners who support each other with a strong
sense of faith and purpose. She also enjoys the regular monthly face-to-face
meetings during “Evenings with the Dean.”
During her first Wealth Circle meeting, Ms. Toots Palomo of Great Image
was one of the first friends she made that day. Ren was so impressed by the
humility and excellence that Toots shared with her. She is grateful to TRC for
exposing her to business people with a focus on both earning well and giving
back.
Ren further said, “Our country needs to have more business leaders who
care not just for profit but also for the people. I know that I haven’t maximized
the benefits of TRC yet but I’d really like to start my own business soon.”
When asked what were the top three gifts she got from TRC so far, Ren said, “Value of continued learning and
application in business, faith in the goodness of humanity as leaders, and daily inspiration to reach for your dreams.”
“I’ve had the privilege of finding a great partner for our family’s real estate business in Tanza, Cavite from the TRC
community. Sunshine Luis has been one of the top-selling brokers of San Mara Subdivision. She has truly exceeded my
expectations,” she gratefully shared.
Ren happily supports her husband Dominic Castillejos in managing his business, Batanes Travel and Tours. She also
hosts a weekly TV program on the Global News Network (GNN) called The Business Portal: On the Corporate World.

HOW TO SET GOALS FOR 2018

Happy New Year! 


Around mid-December 2017, a friend messaged me on Facebook and asked me how I set my yearly goals. I detailed
to her what I do and she found it interesting. She then asked permission if she could do the same.
As we start the year, I’d like to share with you three tips on how to set goals for 2018 and make it your best year ever!

Tip 1: GRATITUDE

As you begin the New Year, think about all the blessings God has given you last year.
I encourage you to write them down so you will always be reminded how blessed and
loved you are.
That act of recalling your blessings and writing them down will make you feel so
good, so loved, so blessed. God is so good. I encourage you to sit down, recall your 2017
blessings, write them down, and thank God for everything.
Do you know that when you think of blessings, more blessings will come? Your
gratitude list will also give you the momentum to enter 2018. 

Tip 2: GOLD

Write down your top lessons in 2017. This is very important. Walk down memory
lane. Think how your 2017 unfolded. What went well? What needed to be improved?
What were the greatest lessons you learned that you can bring to 2018?
One of the greatest lessons I learned in 2017 was to say no without feeling guilty.
When friends would invite me for lunch or dinner or movies, I would always say yes even
if I was already so tired that day and needed to rest. The result? I’d catch colds and I
wouldn‘t be able to function properly on a given week. Lately, I learned that it’s OK to say
no sometimes so I can say yes to my health and to doing God’s greater plans for me.
I also learned the importance of dolce far niente. It’s an Italian phrase that means the
“sweetness of doing nothing.” I learned this from the movie Eat, Pray, Love. 
In your case, write down the greatest lessons you learned in 2017 so you can remember how to better your 2018.

Tip 3: GOALS

This is the most exciting part. It’s a brand-new year.


It’s the perfect time to set new goals.  Have you written
down your 2018 goals yet? I encourage you to write them
down and read them every day. You can create two types of
goals: Personal and Professional.
Under Personal, write down the places you’d like to
travel, the books you’d like to read, the people you’d like to
meet, other personal projects you want to do, etc.
Under Professional, write down your financial goals,
career or business goals, and so on.
Let’s zoom in on your Financial Goals. Last November
2017, I went to Dubai to give a financial management talk
for our kababayans in Dubai.
When you work on your financial goals, start with
your WHY. Why do you want to succeed in your finances? Why do you want to get rich?

encourage you to sit down, recall your 2017
blessings, write them down, and thank God
for everything!

When I was still an employee, my “big why” was


to improve my finances so I can quit my job and pursue
my passion for writing and public speaking full time. My
“why” was so strong, it inspired me to keep investing in my
financial education, delay my gratification, and apply what
I was learning  
Your “why” will give you the drive to work on your
financial goals.
Once your “why” is clear, write down your “what.”
In other words, what are your financial goals for 2018? Be
specific.
For example, it could be:
“I want to start investing in the stock market.”
“I want to have one million  pesos in my stocks
portfolio by December 25, 2018.
“I want to earn additional P10,000 per month passive income through my affiliate commissions in TRC.” (I created a
free online course on “How to Earn Passive Income as an Affiliate of TRC.” You can enrol for FREE at writeuniversity.net.) 
Then the next step is to determine “how” to achieve your goals. Write down the strategies you can employ to achieve
your financial goals. Have a yearly plan, a monthly plan, and a daily plan.
To summarize, here are the three Gs to make 2018 your best year ever: Gratitude, Gold, and Goals.
To make your financial plans more effective, you need three things: Why (Heart), What (Head), and How (Hands).

BUILD A BUSINESS THAT CAN


FINANCE THE KINGDOM
Two years ago, we had a mini-crisis in one of our ministries: It hit zero funds. Without a miracle, it would fold up and
cease to exist.
Perhaps you’re wondering why I call it a mini-crisis, not a major one. Answer: It happens so often, we’re used to it.
First of all, we’ve been doing this for more than thirty-five years. Mention a problem, and we’ve been there, done
that. Nothing new.
Second, we run multiple ministries—all running at the same time and in various battlefronts, from media ministries
to mercy ministries. We share the Good News via anything we can slap a God-message on—magazines, books, e-books,
blogs, apps, video, radio, TV—to building little communities (called Feasts) all over the world, and organizing gigantic
conferences. We also run orphanages, home for the aged, scholarship foundation for poor kids, 24-hour pastoral care
center, center for pregnant women in crisis, prison ministry, and so on. And as if we’re getting bored and don’t have much
to do in life, every so often, we add one more ministry. (The latest ministry we started is for lepers.)
So running out of money in one or two of these ministries is no big deal to us. It happens. Often.
But here’s the happy advantage of being rich: When donations aren’t coming, this scene takes place:
The guy (or gal) in charge of this or that ministry shoots me an email and says, “Brother Bo, our funds are dry. Can
you help? Please tide us over a couple of months until the donations start pouring in again.”
I hit the reply button and type, “Sure. How much do you need?”
I’m not saying this to brag. Because what I do is NOTHING compared to the real heroes who do the actual ministry
on the ground, their hands dirty with the mess and muck of ministry. God has given us an amazing team of staff and
volunteers.
But I share this common scene in my life to point out to you the real glory of being truly rich. The ability to email,
“Sure, how much do you need?” is a precious privilege given to people who build successful businesses (money machines)
precisely to love more.
The truly rich have this exquisite pleasure of financing the Kingdom. For this reason, I urge you to be the best
entrepreneur, employee, or investor you can possibly become.
Don’t just open your wallet. Open your heart. Open your life.

Why do business plans not survive first contact with the customer?
In fact, business plans look good on paper. But they do not stand up to evidence. When you get out of the building
and interact directly with customers, you get a whole new world. Faced with the customer, the business plan walls come
tumbling down.
Just like the walls of Jericho came tumbling down.
Let me clarify.
My story began with an auction where I won a five-unit apartment building worth P1,700,000.00 with no money
down. My ROI for that deal? Infinity! Details and computation for my story are found in the book Think, Rich Pinoy.
Sharing my story, I unwittingly stumbled into a new business model for buying and selling real estate in the Philippines:
rent-to-own.
Soon I found myself saying my business plan/model was: Find It, Fund It, Fix It, and Flip It. The 4Fs break down into
manageable steps, i.e., the rent-to-own business model.
Intrigued, I started to do the business plan/model again and again. I found other properties. I funded them by
borrowing from banks. I fixed the property. Notice I focused on properties with structures, e.g., townhouses.
I then flipped the property using a rent-to-own contract. How did I use the business model to move from that first

I ran into problems. Only later did I find out the truth from Steve Blank who said, “No business plan survives first
contact with the customer.”
I started to backtrack. What’s with my business plan/model?
Why do I wildly succeed in some properties but do poorly with others? What do people mean when they speak of
their business model compared to business plans?

Problem of BLAH, BLAH, BLAH

I faced the problem of BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. Same term—“business model”—but different understandings and
meanings. It was like the Tower of Babel. Each person trying to communicate but each speaking their own language
giving different meanings. Chaos.
Confusion and chaos.
Only later, much later, with a lot of scars on my ego, did I stumble into the Business Model Canvas first drawn by
Alexander Osterwalder in his book Business Model Generation.
And across the Atlantic, Steve Blank was working independently wrestling with the same questions as Osterwalder,
namely, “What is a business model?”
Osterwalder’s answer was simple—nine boxes, like nine rooms—provide the structure or the frame for any
business.
The nine boxes frame the business model. Draw or write on it and you have a business model canvas. Voila, you’re
able to sketch your business model.

Visually, the Business Model Canvas can be described as a 9-Room House. That’s my real estate background shining
through. But the 9 Rooms apply to any business—real estate or otherwise. The rooms are:
• Value Proposition (VP)
• Customer Segments (CS)
• Channels (CH)
• Revenue Streams (RS)
• Customer Relationships (CR)
• Key Partners (KP)
• Key Resources (KR)
• Key Activities (KA)
• Cost Structure (CS)
The TRP Business Model Canvas helps folks innovate, start, and scale their next bright idea from the ground up.
Negritos in Bacolod, cooperatives in Pampanga, Tacloban entrep refugees, corporations like Proctor and Gamble.
Small to big. Different industries. Each business has a “business model canvas.”

and embrace it more fully through this pilgrimage.
  I see a pilgrimage as a long holy retreat.
