The Hound of the Baskervilles Creative Project

Background: In this activity, you will read a literary classic which relates to issues raised in
society.

Audience: The audience for this project will be your peers for presentation and the teacher for
final evaluation.

Purpose for the Assignment: The purposes of this project are to enhance your understanding of
he novel’s characters, situations, relationships, and conflicts, extend the reading of The Hound of
the Baskervilles beyond the text, connect your reading experiences, and work individually or
collaboratively with another class member to present information gained from reading in a
creative form.

Procedure: In order to complete this activity, which is worth a test grade of 100 points, you
should follow this process.

1. Read all of the directions on the directions sheet before starting.

2. Choose to work individually or with ONE other person from class and notify me of
your partnership. Both of your names should appear on a 3x5 index card with your
chosen project option.
3. Select ONE of the projects on the following pages. You may choose from a character
vizualization booklet, a chain or events diagram, or a geometric character analysis.
Projects must be appropriate in content. Follow the directions for your chosen project.
4. Work with your partner or by yourself to complete your project on time and to the best of
your ability. Make sure you ask questions or seek help if you are experiencing difficulty.
5. Brainstorm ideas before you begin your project and develop a list of materials you will
need to complete the project. If you work with a partner:
 agree on a plan for completing your project.
 divide the workload evenly and decide who will be responsible for each portion of
the project.
 support each other in your efforts.
6. Plan to present your project in class. Presentations of your final project are mandatory or
the project will result in a 0.0. Sparce projects and presentations will receive a poor
grade. All content must be appropriate or the project will receive a 0.0. If you work
with a partner, BOTH of you must be present for your presentation AND both of
you must have equal participation in your presentation. Absences will hinder your
progress and lower your grade significantly (10 points per day including weekends.
NO EXCEPTIONS). If you are not prepared on your assigned date your project will
result in a 0. In that case, you will have the option of making an appointment to stay after
school to present. Your grade will then be averaged in with the 0, the 0 counting as 15%-
35%. In extreme emergencies see the teacher. Presentation days will be announced in
class and you will sign up with the teacher. Choose a date that works for you.
7. If you work with a partner, both of you will earn the same grade; therefore, it is important
for BOTH of you to work together cooperatively and collaboratively. How well you
come to understand the material and your time and effort will affect how well the class
understands your presentation. WHAT YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND, ASK ME FOR
CLARIFICATION. Do not move forward if you do not understand what you have been
asked to read.
8. Notify the teacher if any special materials are needed for the day of your presentation at
least TWO days in advance so arrangements can be made.
9. Your project will count as a test grade for the fourth marking period. Therefore, plan
your project and presentation and delivery seriously. A poor and impractical project and
presentation will lower your grade SIGNIFICANTLY!
10. Compete your work in a timely manner and ask questions as you progress. Those who
procrastinate should remember that poor planning on your part does not constitute an
emergency on my part.
11. Submit your project by the assigned date. Your project will be evaluated by the rubric
attached at the end of project options.
12. See the teacher if you have any questions or concerns.

Character Visualization Booklet

Task: For this project you will make a booklet which will illustrate six important characters
from The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Audience: The audience for this project will be your peers for presentation and the teacher for
final evaluation.

Purpose for the Assignment: The purpose of the project is to show readers how and why you
envision the characters of the novel.

Procedure: In order to complete this option, you should follow this process.

1. You should identify SIX important characters you think are important to the plot of the
novel.

2. Locate and cut out appropriate magazine photographs of people who appear to be like
each of the characters you have selected. If you can not find a magazine you may obtain
appropriate picture from the internet. You MUST cite where you obtained your pictures.
You CAN NOT cite google, you must go directly to the site and give that information.

3. Skim through the novel to find dialogue spoken by the selected character or by other
characters about the selected character. The dialogue should match the appearance, facial
and/or physical, of the person in the photograph you have selected to represent the
character from the novel. Print in blue or black ink or type the lines/dialogue on a neatly
trimmed piece of white unlined paper.

4. On another piece of white unlined paper, print or type a paragraph in which you discuss
why the person in the photograph best represents the selected character from the novel
AND how the lines you selected are appropriate for the character.

5. Mount each photograph and the selected lines on the front of a piece of construction
paper (or other appropriate material such as oak tag) and mount the paragraph on the
back of the same piece of construction paper.

6. Design a cover for the booklet. Include the title and author of the novel and include some
appropriate symbol or graphic a reader might connect to the novel. Do not forget to
include your name and your partner’s.

7. Bind all the pages together in some fashion, staples, ribbon, clasps, paper clip, folder,
loose leaf binder, report cover, so your work remains together.

8. Submit the visualization booklet on the assigned date. Include the rubric attached at the
end of project options.

Chain of Events Diagram

Task: For this project you will create a chain of events graphic for a portion of The Hound of
the Baskervilles.

Audience: The audience for this project will be your peers for presentation and the teacher for
final evaluation.

Purpose for the Assignment: The purpose of the project is to describe the stages of an event,
the actions of a character, or the steps in a procedure.

Procedure: In order to complete this option, you should follow this process.

1. You and your partner should select a series of at least TEN events, ten sequential actions
by the same character, or a single procedure, like Holmes’ scientific method, to prepare a
graphic presentation. As you make your selections, think about the following questions.

a. What is the first step in the procedure or initiating event?

b. What are the next stages or steps?
c. How does one event lead to another?
d. What is the final outcome?

2. List the events in chronological sequence.

3. On a piece of large oak tag or poster board, create a heading that includes the title and
author of the novel, some symbol or graphic the reader might conncet to the novel, and
your name as well as your partner’s. (If you do not want to use oak tag or poster board,
you may create a booklet with this information as the title page. Bind all the pages
together in some fashion so your work remains together).

4. Below the heading, draw a square or rectangle for each event, action, or step you listed in
step 2. Each square or rectangle should be connected by an arrow in order for the reader
to see that each block leads to the next. (If you decide to create a booklet, devote a single
page to each square or rectangle).

5. In each square or rectangle, place a symbol or drawing to represent the event, action, or
step.

6. Below each square or rectangle, print or paste a caption which gives a synopsis of the
event, action, or step and why the event, action, or step is important to the novel.

7. Submit the chain of events diagram on the assigned date. Include the rubric attached at
the end of project options.

Geometric Character Analysis

Task: For this project you will develop a geometric character analysis to represent characters
and to suggest their inter-relationships and conflicts in The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Audience: The audience for this project will be your peers for presentation and the teacher for
final evaluation.

Purpose for the Assignment: The purpose of the project is to describe the importance of the
relationships of the characters and conflicts.

Procedure: In order to complete this option, you should follow this process.

1. You and your partner should identify EIGHT character relationships you think are
important to the plot of the novel.

2. Assign each character a geometric figure (circle, triangle, square, rectangle, octagon,
pentagon, trapezoid, blob, etc) and a color to represtnt the personality type you see in the
character.

3. Label the colored shape with the character’s name. (You will need a shape each time you
use the character to express a relationship.)

4. On a piece of oak tag or white unlined paper, place the geometric shapes in a form that
represents the relationship between the characters. You may adjust the size of the shape
to show dominance or compliance in the relationship, or you may place the shapes in a
manner which expresses the proximity of the relationship. You may connect the figure
with arrows, with dotted or jagged lines, or with varying shades and degrees of color to
explain further nuances in the relationship.

5. Place a caption below the geometric pattern to identify the scene from the novel.

6. On a piece of white unlined paper, print or type a paragraph in which you explain what
the geometric design represents about each character and how the color, shape, size, and
placement refer to the specific relationship as it is expressed in the plot of the novel and
place this on the back of the geometric analysis.

7. Design a cover for your booklet. Include the title and author of the novel and include
some symbol or graphic a reader might connect to the novel. Do not forget to include
your name as well as your partner’s.
8. Bind all pages together in some fashion, staples, ribbon, clasps, paper clip, folder, loose
leaf binder, report cover, so your work remains together.

9. Submit the geometric character analysis on the assigned date. Include the rubric attached
at the end of project options.
