Description of Turbine Shaft Seal

For KTMD Project

For turbine shaft of KDMD project PH-IV, the shaft seal is a non-contact shaft seal, which is
the manufacture’s patent (patent NO: ZL 2008 2 0169095.X) and widely used at home and
abroad.

There is no contact between stationary and rotating parts in the shaft seal, therefore, the
lifetime of the seal is practically significantly prolonged as no physical wearing will occur. The
seal is maintenance free and requires no cooling or lubrication water at normal turbine
operation.

The pressure water and sand can be drained by the pumping device through head cover
relief pipe, so the water and solids will not enter the shaft seal. During normal operation, the
shaft seal is dry. A rubber type seal with pressure air is furnished below the non-contact
shaft seal, for maintenance after unit shutdown.

The obvious advantages of our shaft seal system are as follows:

1. No wearing parts and no maintenance

2. No need for clean water for cooling or lubrication.

3. Protection of head cover and shaft seal from sand erosion.
