Teaching Labs: Choral and Instrumental Performance
In the MT Music courses, all candidates will be required to learn both choral and instrumental pedagogy and
teaching techniques. This will be of great benefit to you as you enter the field of teaching grade 7-12 music in the
public/separate/private or international education systems. It is rare that you will find a music position that is
solely in your music specialty, in the city and area you want to teach in. We are music educators as opposed to
being only Band directors or Choral directors. We must be able to teach in in every area of the music program with
confidence and musical knowledge: performance, theory, composition, improvisation, conducting, history, world
music, ear training, sight reading/sight singing and more.

OISE/UT does have some woodwind and brass instruments that we will have access to for our classes, and on some
days, we will be able to keep for the week (or week to week) to practice so as to be able to progress in our Music
Teaching Lab, when you and your peers will be teaching/conducting each other in different settings. Choral majors
will also be playing an instrument, and instrumental majors will also sing. Your major assignments however
(Teaching Beginning Instrumental or Choral Pedagogy) will always concentrate in your major area of expertise.

OISE does house 22 or so Band instruments, so if any of you have access to another Band instrument that you are
not extremely strong on, it would be helpful if you let me know this as well. Please keep in mind when you are
selecting instrument choices that we are aiming to have a balanced ensemble. Ideally if you play a woodwind
instrument in the Fall, you will play a Brass one in the Winter session and visa versa just for variety of experience.
We will see once we start performing.
