Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Collab and Conquer

Content Area: ELA
Grade Level(s): 3rd
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE3W5: With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and
strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, and editing. (Editing
for conventions should demonstrate command of Language standards 1–3 up to and including grade 3.)
ELAGSE3W1: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons.

Technology Standard Addressed: Knowledge Constructor

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity:

KidPub
URL(s) to support the lesson:
https://www.kidpub.com/
Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom: Over the course of a few weeks, the students will compose their own opinion piece. The topic
can be about whatever they want, as long as it is approved by the teacher. The students will publish their own
work on KidPub and allow other students to read their article and comment some of their thoughts. Over the
course of this paper, the students will be asked to go onto KidPub and comment on the writings of other
students. The students will be using these comments and feedback to edit their paper before they submit the
final draft of their paper.
The online learning project will allow the students to receive feedback that may differ greatly than the
feedback that other students or their teacher would give. It allows an outsider perspective who has no idea
about the writer to come in and give honest opinions. Commenting on other writings will help the original
authors and allow the students to see different forms of writing that they may not be as comfortable writing.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
An internet connection, computer or tablet
Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: The students will collaborate with people outside of their classroom by having their work
published and edited by the other users of KidPub.
b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project):
The students will be producing their own work for their submission. The students get to pick their area
that they are discussing. Their original product will be the final draft of their paper after it is edited.

c. Higher-order thinking:
The students will have to use higher order thinking because they will be analyzing information to
create their paper.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product:
Other students who have accounts on KidPub will use their product in the same way that they are being
instructed to use in this lesson. The other students will also read their papers for entertainment.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

The use of assistive technology can be used to make this lesson available to every student. If the student has a
physical disability that stops them from being able to type their paper, they could use the Big Keys or have
someone type as they say their essay aloud. If the student is an ELL student, then they could post their paper
in Spanish or use google translate so that they could write in whichever language they felt more confident in
and then change it to English if necessary.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: This lesson could be implemented by modifying
the amount of information shown on each child’s profile. Information such as the name, age, and location of a
child are collected when the profile is formed, but this can be changed in the settings of each profile. The
district’s Internet Safety and Student Privacy policies can be directly used to determine how much
information is shown.

Reflective Practice: I think that the main benefit of this lesson is the fresh input that it allows from editing.
Frequently in elementary schools for peer editing, students choose to use their friends or they don’t really
want to offend anyone so many mistakes go unmarked. By broadcasting the paper online, the students can
have people with no personal input in their lives look at their paper. It also allows them to practice more of
their grammatical skills while still being involved in the technological aspect of the project.
