NB… If in doubt, please contact MiTek on:
The use of “Gryptite“ connector plates is the carpenter’s alternative option to nailing and
bolting in the manufacture of site made timber roof trusses.
The use of this method could save ± 50 % on timber requirements compared to bolted
trusses, and is completely acceptable in terms of the National Building Regulations
(NBR). The designs in this manual have been approved by MiTek’s professional
engineers. The designs are therefore guaranteed by MiTek Industries S. A. (Pty) Ltd as
long as the specifications are complied with. This manual covers only the manufacture of
“King Post “,“Queen Post “, “Fink “ trusses and a small mono pitch truss for concrete tiles,
metal tiles, asbestos sheeting and metal sheeting.
If you wish to use “Gryptite“ nail plates to make trusses with a shape not shown in this
manual you must contact MiTek at any one of our regional offices, or alternatively
contact your nearest MiTek truss fabricator for advice.
Roof trusses are structural elements which must be made and erected with care. Failure
to do so could lead to serious injury or even loss of life. When designing a roof truss
make sure it is designed for the correct truss type, span, pitch and roof covering material
in accordance with sound engineering practice.
Maximum truss centres and purlin centres must not be exceeded. “Gryptite“ plates must
always be applied to both sides of a truss.
NB. Only minimum S5 or higher stress graded structural timber must be used, in
accordance with the engineers design.
Make sure the required span of a truss falls between the minimum and maximum of
spans for the truss shape i.e. a 4350 mm span will be designed as a “Queen Post “
configuration because the span falls between 4000 mm and 6500 mm (see attached
schedules).
All designs allow for a bottom chord load of 0.14kN/m² (14kg/m²) for conventional
domestic ceiling construction. Ensure that this is in fact the only ceiling load that the
truss will have to carry.

Important Notes
Install plates on both sides of every joint with the nail plates in the indicated
position. No attempt must be made to remove plates for re-use.
All timber to be S.A. Pine, of minimum grade S5 or better to SANS 1783 -
Stress Graded Softwood General Structural Timber.
The gap between butted timber members at joints should not exceed 2mm.
Ensure that all nails on Gryptite plates are hammered in completely using a
hammer with a big head or a 4 pound hammer.
Gable trusses are to be positioned 50mm from the inside face of the gable
wall.
Trusses may only be supported at the indicated positions. Do not support
trusses on internal walls. Trusses must have a minimum of 75mm bearing on
the supporting walls.
The truss shape must be in accordance with the information herein. Truss
members must not be cut or removed.
Position the water tank or geyser only where indicated on roof plan, for typical
geyser support detail refer to attached detail GT (page 20). It is preferable to
support water tanks, geysers etc. on internal walls.
All trusses to be stored, handled, erected and braced strictly in accordance with
SANS 10243 and refer to MiTek Bracing Details.
Purlins to be connected to trusses at with either eCo Hurricane Clips or eCo
Purlin Clips in accordance with standard MiTek details.
Gryptite roof trusses as per these specifications may only be used for gable
end roofs.
For any other type of roof, i.e. hipped roofs, L- shaped roofs etc. please contact
MiTek Industries S.A. (Pty) Ltd. for designs, or your local MiTek roof truss
fabricator.
Plate dimensions given in Standard Design tables are not exact. They are
approximate to the nearest centimeter.
Note that where trusses are exposed in corrosive environment (such as within
10km of the sea) Epoxy tar must be applied to all Gryptite plates.

Plot this information onto a concrete slab or other flat surface. Starting with the left
heel point, measure 2060mm along the horizontal span line and mark it, then draw a
straight line of 1000mm at 90°to the span line, this will be the rise. Draw a straight line
through the heel point and the rise point. This will form the 26°pitch that is required.
Repeat the exercise on the right hand side starting at the heel point. (See diagrams)
After completing this, there will be two rafter lines at 26° to the span line.

6. This will give the pitch height.
7. Then shoot chalk line from right hand span point to pitch height on centre line.
Check that top chords are exactly the same length.
