14.5 Release

Introduction to ANSYS LS-DYNA

Workshop Goal and Procedure

Goal:
Add mass scaling to previous aluminum soda can crushing simulation
Procedure:
• Load the existing Can Crush Project
• Turn on mass scaling and re-run the simulation
• Compare results between the two simulations

Step 1 – Restore the Can Crush Project

1.a Start ANSYS Workbench and Restore the Archive

empty_soda_can.zip located in the Workshop 5 folder (this is the
project set up in Workshop 9)
1.b Edit the Setup cell

Step 2 – Turn Automatic Mass Scaling On

2.a Select Analysis Settings

2.b Set the Maximum Number of

Cycles to 200

2.c Set Automatic Mass Scaling to Yes

2.d Keep the default value for Minimum CFL

Time Step and Maximum Part Scaling
(we need to determine what value we
should use by running the analysis for
200 cycles)

Step 3 – Generate LSDYNA input file

3.a RMB on Explicit Dynamics and

click on solve to generate
LSDYNAexport.k file

This file is placed in dp0/SYS/MECH

folder of working directory

Step 4 – Run the LS-DYNA Simulation

4.a Open ANSYS Mechanical

Product Launcher and select
simulation environment as
LS-DYNA Solver and a
LS-DYNA in License

4.b Select working directory

as shown

Step 4 – Run the LS-DYNA Simulation

4.c Click on Browse and select

LSDYNAexport.k file from the
working directory

4.d Click on Run to run the

simulation

Step 4 – Run the LS-DYNA Simulation

4.e Program Terminates with an error

message “Termination due to mass
increase”

This error message is generating

because the default value set for
Maximum Part Scaling
(%) is not appropriate with
The specified value of Minimum CFL
time step for this model.

Step 5 – Change Maximum Part Scaling

5.a Set the criterion of Maximum Part

Scaling to 1%
5.b Right click on Explicit Dynamics and click
on Solve to generate LSDYNAexport.k file

Step 5 – Change Maximum Part Scaling

5.c Run LSDYNAexport.k file (as

described in slides 7&8 )

Simulation runs till end with time step

9.0e-8 sec. You will notice that this
time step is more than the time step
without mass scaling (time step
=2.25e- 8)

Step 6 – Change Minimum CFL Time Step

6.a Set the Minimum CFL Time Step to 5e-7 s

6.b Right click on Explicit Dynamics and click
on Solve to generate LSDYNAexport.k file

© 2012 ANSYS, Inc. October 31, 2012 11 Release 14.5

Step 6 – Change Minimum CFL Time Step

6.c Run LSDYNAexport.k file (as

described in slides 7&8 )

Simulation runs till end and

terminates with an message of
Normal Termination.

You will notice that with an addition

of 0.36% of mass, time step size
increased to 4.5e-7sec

Step 7 – Run Full Model

7.a Keep the same settings of Minimum

CFL Time Step and Maximum Part
Scaling
7.b Increase the maximum number of
cycles to 1E7 to solve the model for
6.4 sec
7.c Right click on Explicit Dynamics and
click on Solve to generate LSDYNAexport.k

Step 7 – Run Full Model

7.d Run the LSDYNAexport.k file

Simulation terminates with an

message of Normal Termination

Step 8–Start LS-PrePost & Open Binary Plot

8.a Click on lsprepost.exe from C:\Program Files\ANSYS

Inc\v145\ansys\bin\winx64 to start the LS-PrePost
8.b Open LSDYNA Binary plot (d3plot) in LS-PrePost

Step 8– Plot % Mass Increase

8.c Select Post under FEM and click

on ASCII

8.d Select glstat and click on Load

A file will be loaded

Step 8– Plot % Mass Increase

8.e Select % Mass Increase

8.f Click on Plot
% Mass Increase vs Time graph is
plotted

Step 9 – Compare the Runs

A comparison of both the runs (with mass scaling and without mass Scaling)
shows that an addition of 0.4% mass makes the Run 93.5 % faster.
