INTRODUCTION
This manual is a step-by-step approach to the use, operation, maintenance, and
troubleshooting of PPS31surface pressure logger.

Pioneer Petrotech Services Inc. offers a wide range of oilfield related instruments.
These include memory and surface readout electronic pressure recorders, surface
pressure loggers, permanent installation systems, and DPT (downhole pressure
tools), all of which have been developed and manufactured to obtain the highest
accuracy and resolution in the industry.

Pioneer Petrotech Services Inc. offers products that are durable and reliable with
simple operational procedures. The lightweight design makes transportation to and
from test sites effortless. PPS has taken the data quality obtained from quartz and
sapphire transducers to new frontiers. In addition to the transducers, the state of the
art electronics and surface mount technology have enabled PPS to provide our
customers with top of the line quality pressure gauges.

Overview of the PPS31 System
The PPS31 system consists of the surface pressure logger, the interface box, and the
serial cable. PPS31 software can be run on any Pentium 100 MHZ computer or
higher with Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP operating systems.

The surface pressure logger which is powered by an internal battery is connected to

one end of the interface box. The other end of the interface box is connected via an
RS232 cable to the Serial Port of the computer in order to set up the communication
between the surface pressure logger and the PPS31 software.

Using PPS31 Logger

Warning: An aluminum enclosure is used. In a hazardous area, any impact and/or

friction shall be avoided.

Warning: In a hazardous area, the non-metallic parts represent an electrostatic

hazard and are NOT be cleaned with a dry cloth.

The PPS31 logger has several switches controlling different functions. The switch
button on the right side of the logger turns on/off the LCD where you read the
current pressure and temperature from. (See the picture below)

Radio antenna
(Optional)

3
The switches under the cover lens are used to turn the logger on/off and to convert
the pressure and temperature units correspondingly. (See the picture below)

On – turn the logger on

Off – turn the logger off

On – display pressure in
metric units (kPa, °C)
Off – display pressure in
imperial units (psi, °F)

Operating Modes

The surface pressure logger can operate in three different modes: Sampling Mode,
Stand-by Mode, and Communication Mode.

Sampling Mode: The tool is in Sampling Mode when a battery is

connected to the surface pressure logger without the interface box and cable
attached to it. Under normal operating conditions the logger is programmed
and then transported to the surface.

The logger carries out the program in accordance with the instructions pre-
stored in the memory.

Stand-by Mode: The logger is in Stand-by Mode when it is not sampling

(i.e. in between the samples). PPS loggers are designed to switch to Stand-by
Mode automatically between samples.

Communication Mode: The surface logger is in Communication Mode

when the interface box and cable are connected to both the logger and the
computer. This Mode is used to program the logger, download data from the
logger, and perform other related operations through the software.

4
Power Consumption Of The PPS31 pressure logger
The PPS31 loggers are designed to consume the lowest power; therefore, the battery
life can be extended to save operational expenses for our customers.

Power consumption at different modes is as follows:

Stand-by Mode: 0.8 mA.

Sampling Mode: 3 mA.
Communication Mode: 10 mA.

Warning: TO PREVENT IGNITION OF A HAZARDOUS ATMOSPHERE,

BATTERIES MUST ONLY BE CHANGED IN AN AREA KNOWN TO
BE NON-HAZARDOUS.

MAINTENANCE IS ONLY TO BE DONE WITH THE POWER

DISCONNECTED SUBSTITUTION OF COMPONENTS MAY IMPAIR
INTRINSIC SAFETY.

5
Connecting To the Computer
1. Connect the logger to the computer using the interface box through the USB port.
2. Program the logger using the SmartView software.
3. Disconnect the interface box after programming
4. Install logger on to the wellhead and let it start working.
5. Logger is uninstalled from wellhead and moved to a safe place.
6. Connect the logger to the computer again to download and process the data
recorded.

Warning: Do not use the Interface Box with your computer at places where
explosive or flammable gases are present, due to a safety concern
(spark). Please program the gauge at a safe location before installing it
on-site or putting it into well.

6
Installing The PPS31 Software
All the files needed to install your PPS31 software are supplied on two diskettes.
These disks are numbered because they are used in a specific order by the
installation routine. To install the PPS31 software, Please see Software Manual.

Maintenance
Display check:
Turn on the power to check the display. If the display works regularly, it will
sleep when the black button is pushed.
Push again the black button to restart the display.
The Crossover and the gauge housing should be tied up.
