➢ REPUBLIC ACT NO. 1425. AN ACT TO INCLUDE IN THE CURRICULA OF ALL PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS,
COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES COURSES ON THE LIFE, WORKS AND WRITINGS OF JOSE RIZAL, PARTICULARLY
HIS NOVELS NOLI ME TANGERE AND EL FILIBUSTERISMO, AUTHORIZING THE PRINTING AND DISTRIBUTION
THEREOF, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES.

➢ The realization was that Filipinos were becoming more American than Filipino
➢ The solution they suggested was the provision of a nationalist educational army

o Suicide bombers, the Red Army, Janissaries, Hashashim, the Hitler Youth
➢ What Filipinos needed was a model that could instill the idea of nationalism – the answer was Rizal
➢ PI 100 – Philippine Institutions 100
➢ There were a lot of criticisms against it, most of all coming from the church
➢ Course Objectives:
o To be familiar with Rizal’s contributions to Filipino Nationalism
o To instill a dedication of our lives to the ideals of freedom
o To foster a special love of country through closer study of the biography of Rizal
➢ To some extent, the law succeeded in reminding students of their duties to their country that they often
neglected or overlooked
➢ (?) This proposal was done in 1956. The question is, was the solution effective?
➢ Different schools adopted the Rizal Law in different ways
o Ateneo’s course title (Rizal and the birth of Filipino Nationalism)
o US course objectives – The use of liberal education through the formation of a professional
dedicated to regional and national development and human achievement.
➢ The Filipino can compete in the national arena; the hindrance to do so is caused by the lack of a sense of
country; The Filipino does not think in terms of nation
