Lifelong Professional Learning

Lifelong learning is an important part of life in order to achieve success, gain continued

knowledge and skills, and helps with continued motivation. Creating opportunities to be a

professional nurse leader requires dedication and ongoing education in order to create a strong

foundation for growth in the ever-changing healthcare community. Lack of ongoing learner

would create a stagnant environment of healthcare workers who would not be informed of new

technology, best-care practices as well as current and future information needed for growth in the

advancement in healthcare.

New information will increase the nurse leader’s development and help to continue to

create an environment of competitiveness and growth. The healthcare field needs leaders and

nurses who are prepared for increasing health problems as we must not only provide optimal

care, but must also be able to educate patients and their families about prevention and

management of chronic diseases. The IOM reports emphasis that if nurses are to be as effective

as possible in helping to provide high-quality patient- and family-centered care, they will need to

be better prepared as care becomes more complex and moves into the community (The Future of

Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, 2010 ). Without extensive ongoing education the

professional nurse and leaders will not be able to function to the highest quality of care in the

healthcare setting.

Five Year Student Vision

Professional Development Plan
My five year vision as a nurse leader is to build a team of nurse professionals who work

collaboratively to improve the work environment and create opportunities for implementation of

innovative ideas for ongoing development of the highest quality of care. I would like to become

a Director of Nursing at a long term care facility and create an environment where my nursing

staff are engaged and conduct themselves in a professional manner. I plan to implement changes

necessary to improve relationships amongst staff and create future leaders through continuing

education and successful development. Nursing workforce predictions indicate that there could

be a shortage of up to 67,000 nurse managers by 2020 (Shirey, 2006).

Ten Year Student Vision

My ten year vision as a nurse leader is to begin the retirement process, but during my ten

year leadership role I envision helping to create future leaders who are well educated. With

individuals working until an older age and then retiring, future nurse leaders are in the hands of

the next generation of nurses. I would like to become an nurse educator in both the classroom

setting as well as the clinical setting. I plan to help create effective nurse leaders by contributing

my years of knowledge and experience.
