4 Welcome to XnView
Welcome to XnView, the Universal Graphic Viewer and Converter.

With XnView you can quickly and easily view, process and convert image files. XnView is able to read more than 500 different formats and then convert
them to other formats such as GIF, BMP, JPG, PNG, multi page TIFF. XnView can also display video formats, many digital camera formats and more
exotic formats such as Amiga IFF and Calamus.

The Image viewer (Browser) is similar to Windows Explorer. You simply navigate the directory structure as desired and any image files found in a
directory are displayed in miniature (Thumbnails). This lets you keep an overview of the images available at the same time as letting you quickly view
and select specific images. XnView can be run without installation and this makes it perfect to be used as a "photograph album on CD", especially as it
is free of charge for private use.

As well as offering easy image viewing, XnView also offers more advanced features such as Web page creation, contact prints, multiple conversion
(format and transformation), slide shows, screen capturing and Twain support for scanners and digital cameras. Numerous image filters and effects for
image processing are available. The connection to other widely used professional graphic programs e.g.Adobe Photoshop, can be done using 'Drag and
Drop', clipboard or 'Open With' Menu option.

XnView lets you create the optimal defaults according to your needs and preferences, thereby letting you work in the most efficient manner. The
integrated file operations such as copying, moving, creation of directories and files makes XnView the universal tool for graphics.

An additional features is that XnView is available on many operating systems e.g. Windows ®, LINUX, HP/UX. In addition, to change its display (e.g.
headings, text) to over 40 different languages, including English, French and German.

We hope you have a lot of fun (and success) working with XnView!

7
5 Overview of Functions
XnView offers a variety of functions to display and process images. Here is a list of the most important functions:

• XnView can process a variety of picture formats. XnView can read over 500 Supported File Formats, including all common formats such as
GIF, TIFF, JPEG, PNG, BMP, ICO and Camera RAW.

• The XnView Browser is similar to Windows Explorer. It lets you navigate the directory structure, displaying all pictures in the current directory
in a miniature view (thumbnails). Images can be double-clicked to be opened for larger viewing, editing and other operations.

• Standard file operations such as the copying, moving and deleting of files can be performed while in the Browser.

• XnView can edit IPTC on JPEG & TIFF

• XnView can display pictures in a configurable Slide Show. You can also display pictures directly from CDs (Self-Starting Slide-Shows from
CD), creating an electronic photograph album.

• Various image Filters and effects are available to control sharpness, glass effect, colour exchange etc.

• Copy complete pictures or just parts of them to and from the Clipboard.

• Open and exchange pictures with other applications using Drag & Drop.

• XnView can convert a list of images from one format to another, such as BMP to JPG, using Batch Conversion., and can simultaneously apply
one or more image filters and effects.

• The resize function can be used to increase or decrease image size as required.

• Create Contact Sheet can be used to make miniatures of your pictures.

• Retrieve and display important Image Information such as size and colour density in a number of different ways.

• XnView supports Scanners and Digital Cameras directly using the TWAIN protocol.

• Use Create Web Page to make HTML pages with pictures including Navigation and Preview.

• XnView can play the most popular sound files such as "midi" (*.mid -- *.rmi) "Wave" (*.wav), or MP3 (*.mp3).

• Rotate or flip JPEG images with no loss of information (JPG Lossless Transformations).

• Remove Red Eyes.

• XnView can join images horizontally or vertically with Create Strip of Images (also called "panorama" images).

• XnView is extremely flexible and allows a high degree of optimisation and default settings. This means it is easily tailored to individual needs
and preferences.

• XnView can together with Total Commander® be used as a file administration tool.

8
6 Display Mode
XnView presents two different user interfaces, or windows, depending on context: Browser Mode and Viewer Mode. When XnView is started, it will
normally begin in Browser mode and show the contents of a folder.

XnView's menu bars and tool bars are context-sensitive, and change depending on the mode The toolbars are also dependent on context. Grayed-out
menu items are not available in the current mode or context.

Most of XnView's common functions and menu/toolbar items are available using Shortcut Keys.

Tool tips are available throughout XnView. To display the function of a toolbar icon, simply move the mouse over the button and leave it there for a
moment.

A third display option, Basic Mode, is rarely need or used, but is mentioned here for purposes of being thorough.

9
7 Browser Mode
By default, XnView opens in browser mode. This is also the mode from which you will probably do most of your work and navigating with XnView.

The browser mode window consists of three panes: navigation, thumbnails, and image. The layout of the browser mode window, the size of the
thumbnails, and various other display options are controlled by settings (a) on the View menu, and (b) in Tools > Options > Browser > Thumbnails. The
relative size of the different panes may be adjusted with the usual Windows controls. You should experiment with these options and settings to find the
browser mode display that is most effective for your particular needs.

XnView's shortcut keys are context-sensitive. For the shortcut keys that work in Browser mode, see Browser Mode Shortcut Keys and All Modes
Shortcut Keys.

Using The Browser

The XnView Browser is very similar to the Windows Explorer ®. The Browser window consists of three parts, also named panes:

• The tree pane (tree view of directories, favorites view & categories view) on the left
• The image files in the current directory on the right.
• A preview of the selected image at the bottom, and information about it

10
You can open or select the Browser using the menu item File > Browser or the folder button in the tool bar. The Browser window can only be opened
once (i.e. you cannot have multiple Browser windows)

The Browser opens in the last directory opened. You can change drives or directories by clicking in the directory tree on the left. When a directory has a
small plus on the left, this means it has a sub-directory which can be opened by clicking on the plus symbol or double clicking on the directory symbol.

The current or selected directory is highlighted (normally in blue or grey) and any image files in this directory are displayed as thumbnails in the right
pane of the browser window. You can perform the following actions with an image file:

• An image is selected by a mouse click. In the lower pane of browser, the preview is displayed. In the status bar the most important information
about the image is displayed.

• An image is opened by a double click.

• If the mouse pointer stays over an thumbnail (file), then a tooltip is displayed with image information e.g. colour density, size.

• Double clicking on non images files will open them with their associated program, e.g. double clicking a Microsoft Word file will open the
document using Word in a new window.

• By Dragging & Dropping an image onto another application like Microsoft Word it can be edited in that application.

• Clicking the right mouse button will open a context menu with functions which will be performed on the current selection.

The size of the three browser panes (Directory Tree, list of files, preview) adjusts to the to the size of the Browser window. You can also manually
change the size of each pane.

How To Change the Size of the Browser panes:

• Move the mouse pointer on the grey separating line between two panes. The mouse pointer changes to a File:Example.jpg or
File:Example.jpg depending on the line chosen.

• The separating line can then be dragged and changed as required by simultaneously keeping the left mouse button pressed and moving the
mouse.

How To change the Display Type of Image Files:

The Menu option View > View As or the view symbol in the toolbar lets you change between different display styles for the image files:

• Thumbnails - Images are displayed in miniature or thumbnails. This option is suitable in most cases. The size of the thumbnails can be
changed as required by using the option View > Thumbnails Size ....
• Thumbnails & Labels - Like Thumbnails but with labels (can be configured in option Thumbnails > Thumbnail Label).
• Thumbnails & Details
• Icons - Files are displayed as large symbols.
• Details - Files are displayed as lists displaying names, size and other file information.
• List - Only the file names of the files are displayed in a list, which is made up of several columns. This view is displayed very quickly, since the
file information, but not the image data is read.

You can change the browser to your own preferences by adjusting the layout, sorting the images, layout and visibility of the panes and column visibility
etc, by changing the browser settings using the Menu View.

11
8 Viewer Mode
Image Viewer mode is invoked when an image is opened. You can open an image by either double-clicking on it from Browser mode, or by using the
standard File > Open menu.

Information about the image is displayed in the status bar at the bottom of the window. For more information, see Image Information.

XnView's shortcut keys are context-sensitive. For the shortcut keys that work in Image Viewer mode, see Viewer Mode Shortcut Keys and All Modes
Shortcut Keys.

12
9 Basic Mode

Basic mode is used when the Browser and Viewer modes are not active. The only way to see this mode is by closing all the open windows?the browser
plus as many images as may be open; what you have left is an empty window with a few buttons. This is the "basic" mode, and looks the image below.
See All Modes Shortcut Keys for the shortcut keys that work in Basic mode.

13
10 Image Information
Image size and other information can be displayed in several ways.

In File > Open dialog box

Select an image using the File > Open dialog. Before the image is opened and displayed in the Viewer window, a summary of
image information is presented in the dialog box.

In Browser status bar

Select an image in the XnView Browser using a mouse-click. The image's file size and colour depth is displayed in the status bar;
an image with a height of 200 pixels, a width of 320 pixels, and a colour depth of 24 bits is displayed, for example, as "320x200x24"
.

As Tooltip

Rest the mouse pointer over the image, and then after a short time the tooltip is displayed with information such as image size,
colour depth, and so on.

Using the Properties dialog

♦ Select an Image in the Browser with a mouse click.

♦ Open the context menu using the right mouse button and select the menu item Properties , or use the key combination
Ctrl+E. The dialog Properties is displayed with various information on the image.

14 Setting Up XnView
14.1 Setting Up
Setting up XnView on a computer is very simple and can be done by just copying the appropriate files onto your computer. This is basically what
happens when you use the setup program.

During installation XnView does only two things: it creates a program group called XnView in Start > Programs, and it creates shortcuts on your desktop
and in the task bar. There aren't any other registry settings made during installation. By default, options are stored in a .ini file, so Windows Registry will
not be used and changed. For more information about how and where XnView's settings are kept, see the discussion on Settings and Ini Files.

After installing XnView, you should be able to start and use XnView without any problems. However, taking a few minutes to tailor XnView to your
particular needs and preferences can make working with much easier, more pleasant and more effective.

The following sections give you some basic tips on how to set up XnView. As you will see, there are numerous choices available in the options dialog.
Once you have worked a bit more with XnView, you should reopen the "Options" dialog and see whether you can do some fine tuning.

Using the Options Menu

All settings are available in the Options dialog of XnView. The settings are stored in the file "xnview.ini" or in the Windows registry. To open the option
dialog, select the menu entry Tools > Options, or click on the toolbar icon, or press function key F12.

On the left side of the options dialog you will see the category tree. There are many options available, so they have been categorized for easier access.
On the right side, there are the options. By clicking on an specific entry in the category tree, you can switch between categories. Some categories have
sub categories, you will see a [+], then. Click on the [+] and the subcategories will become visible.

14.2 Suggested Options

Following are some suggestions about how you might want to customize XnView for your preferences. These are the things that most users find
useful/helpful.

14.2.1 Category "Language"

When starting XnView the very first time, it determines and adopts your computer's language setting. If you have an English Windows installed, for
example, the on-screen language of XnView will be English.

In some cases, such as when installing additional languages using the language pack as Add-On, you might need to set the language manually. In the
category "Language" of the options dialog, simply select the language you want XnView to display. When confirming your setting with the "OK" button
the options dialog will close and the language will change immediately.

14.2.2 Category "System Integration"

Add "Browse with XnView" to context menu

In MS Explorer, you can right-click on a file or directory and thus open the so-called context menu. When setting this options, a menu item "Browse with
XnView" will be added to the context menu of MS Explorer. When browsing directories using MS Explorer, you can then quickly switch to XnView by
right-clicking onto a directory, and then choosing the menu item "Browse with XnView". You will see XnView starting and displaying the contents of the
directory you have applied the action. Very convenient.

Associate slide file with XnView

XnView supports slide shows. You can setup a slide show and watch it. If you want to see the same slide show at a later stage, you can save the slide
show in a .sld file. When setting this options, you can double-click on a .sld file in MS Explorer and start the XnView slide show immediately.

Add XnView?s icon to desktop Add XnView to "Programs" menu Add XnView to "Start" menu

Depending on the way you work and how often you want to use XnView, you might find it useful to have icons or menu entries to start XnView. Decide
what's best for you, and execute these functions or not. Note that if you used the XnView setup for installing XnView, you will already have an entry in
the "Programs" menu.

14.2.3 Category "Associations"

XnView is an excellent graphic viewer and also offers various functions and features for image manipulation and editing. If you want to always open your
image files in XnView when double-clicking on an image file in MS Explorer, you can set this here. In the category "Associations", choose the file types
which you want to associate with XnView. See the discussion on Associations for more information.

14.2.4 Category "Browser"

Show Desktop in folder tree

By default, the top node of the folder tree shown in the XnView browser is the node "My Computer". Instead, you may want to have the node "Desktop"
as top node. "Desktop" as top node is standard of MS Explorer and allows you to directly browse your "Desktop" folder, network environment and your

20
"My documents" folder.

14.3 Changing XnView's Appearance

XnView has many options that allow for adjusting it to the users needs, and those include options to set and change the look of XnView. Here are some
preliminary things you can do:

Function Shortcut

Set toolbar skin Go to Tools > Options > Toolbar > Skins and select a skin that you like.

Set XP menu
Check or uncheck Use XP style menus option on the Tools > Options > General > Startup menu.
style

The appearance of XnView's browser window is controlled by the View> Layout menu. See the discussion on
Change layout
Browser Mode.

21
15 Image Rotation
The problem

When taking photos using a digital camera, the orientation of some images might not be correct. When viewing them on the
computer, their orientation is not correct and one has to turn one's head left or right.

Nowadays, quite a number of digital cameras have an orientation sensor and when taking the photo, the orientation information
(and a lot of other data) is saved together with the image data. This orientation information can be read by graphic programs which
can automatically rotate the image.

Automatic rotation

By default, in XnView the automatic rotation is disabled. To enable it you have to check Rotate images based on EXIF orientation in
Tools > Options > Read. After activation, XnView rotates the preview and the images in viewer mode. The thumbnails are not
rotated so that you can see the actual orientation of each image.

Permanent rotation

Also, you can rotate permanently the images based on the EXIF information. This will ensure that the images are oriented properly
when viewing in any graphic programs. To do this, select all your images and select JPG Lossless transformations from the Tools
menu or toolbar.
The rotation is lossless so quality is not affected. Make sure that you keep the checkbox "Reset EXIF orientation value" when
rotating permanently. Otherwise XnView will rotate your images again.

Important hint

After activating the automatic rotation, your old images might be rotated automatically, although they are already oriented properly.
The reason is that these images have been rotated without resetting the EXIF orientation value.

To correct this, you select all (!) your images and choose Tools > JPG lossless rotation. In the dialog you activate the checkbox
"Reset EXIF orientation value" and confirm the dialog with "OK". The orientation value will be reset this way and these images will
not longer be rotated.

22
16 JPEG Lossless Transformations
It is possible to change images with the various images effects and conversions in XnView, however a little image information is lost with every
calculation e.g. you may have 14 degrees in one direction and 14 degrees in another, this information will not be same after a horizontal flip. The
difference is small and hardly visible, but exists nevertheless.

The JPG format allows a special kind of conversion: Loss-less conversions i.e. no image information is lost. JPG files can be rotated and flipped without
losing any image information. This is particularly useful with images from digital cameras or scanners where the orientation of the image frequently
needs to be changed (portrait to landscape and vice versa).

Please note that unlike other conversions where effects are executed in working memory, JPEG loss-less conversions are applied
immediately to the image file.

How To Rotate or Flip a JPG Image Using Lossless Transformation:

♦ Open an image file

♦ Choose the Menu Option ToolsJPEG Lossless Transformations.... The dialog JPEG Lossless Transformations dialog is
displayed:

♦ In this dialog, you can now select the required JPEG lossless transformation i.e. horizontal or vertical flip, rotate left or
right etc.
♦ Apply the transformation by pressing the Go button

XnView transforms the image and then displays it.

If you want to convert several images at once using JPEG lossless transformations, then please follow the steps below:

How To Reflect or Rotate Several JPEG Images At Once Using Lossless Transformation:

♦ Open the browser

♦ Select all the jpeg images you want to transform.
♦ Choose the menu item ToolsJPEG Lossless Transformations.... The JPEG Lossless Transformations dialog (See Above)
is displayed.
♦ In this dialog, you can now select the required JPEG lossless transformation i.e. horizontal or vertical flip, rotate left or
right, etc.
♦ Apply the transformation to all the selected JPEG images by pressing the Go button

XnView then performs the transformations on the selected JPEG images, one after another in the order they are selected.

23
17 Multiple Images Per Page
Sometimes you may want to print a specific image several times on one page, such as a passport photo. XnView does not provide this function
specifically, but you can be resourceful and clever to create/print a page like this:

Here are the steps:

• Make two copies of your passport photo or other original image. You can use MS Explorer or XnView to copy the file.

[1]

• Then use Create > Strip of Images to merge your original and the two copies horizontally. The resulting image will look like this:

[1] + [1] + [1]

• Save the resulting image. Since you want to keep good quality, you should save in a lossless format such as PNG or BMP. The resulting
image might be large, but you will delete it later, after printing.

• Make two copies of the image that you have just created and saved in the previous step. Again, you can use XnView or MS Explorer for this.

• Again use Create > Strip of Images to merge the three images together, this time vertically.

[1][1][1]

[1][1][1]

[1][1][1]

Print and/or save your result. When saving, you can use a lossy format like JPEG.

• Delete the interim files created in these steps.

24
18 Mosaics
A mosaic consists of several images combined to a larger image. When combining images to a mosaic using XnView, the images will be aligned
horizontally or vertically and do not overlap. If you want to combine your images randomly and/or with overlapping, you cannot do this with XnView; you
need a program specifically designed to create mosaics. An internet search for "mosaic graphic" should provide the needed direction.

If you want to create one large image out of several different images, you can use XnView's function Strip of Images. XnView aligns the images side by
side and merges them to a larger image. You can align the images horizontally or vertically.

In order to create a 2x2 image mosaic like this, you have to use Create > Strip of Images three times:

♦ First merge (horizontal)

[children]
[tree]
♦ Second merge (horizontal)
[hills]
[zebra]
♦ Third merge (vertical)
[children][tree]
[hills][zebra]

Make sure that the checkbox Automatically adjust height or width, respectively is checked. XnView will then rescale the images when aligning to insure
that there is no border if images differ in size.

For a 9x9 image you have to do 10 merges (9 horizontal, 1 vertical). It's many steps but not too complicated. But if you want to create many mosaics, it
probably would be best to find some software which provides a special function to do this.

25
19 Red Eyes Correction
Using a digital camera does not mean you escape from the well-known "red eye" problem caused by camera flashes. XnView provides the ability to
remove the unwanted and unsightly red eye with the following steps:

♦ Zoom into the image so that you can clearly see the red eye. The more you zoom in the better, since you can make the
selection in the next step more easily.
♦ Select the area of the image where you would like to apply the correction. The smaller the area the better; choose one
eye as opposed to both.
♦ Choose Red Eye Correction from the Image menu. XnView changes all red pixels to gray.
♦ Repeat these steps until all occurrences of red eye are removed.

Tip

If parts of the image are inadvertently changed (for example, red lips become gray), or you are not happy with the results, then undo the
modification and select a smaller area.

26
20 Contact Sheet
The function creating Contact Sheet works similar to Create Web Page... and will create as a new image containing the thumbnails. The contact sheet
can be edited and saved as required. Here is an example of a Contact Sheet:

How To Create a Contact Sheet of your Images

♦ Open the XnView Browser.

♦ Go to the directory containing the image files.
♦ Select the images you want to create a contact sheet for.
♦ Select the menu item Create > Contact Sheet... or the symbol from the toolbar. The Create Contact Sheet dialog is
displayed:

27
♦ In the Create Contact Sheet dialog, input the desired size and margin (in pixel) in the Dimensions panel.
♦ Create the contact sheet by pressing the Create button. The contact sheet is displayed by XnView and you now can save
the Contact Sheet using the menu item File > Save or the toolbar symbol.

Tips

• If you are not happy with the contact sheet created, repeat the above steps with other input values. E.g. if the thumbnails on the contact sheet
are too small, you increase the dimension or you reduce the number of columns and rows.

• It makes sense to use your screen's resolution as dimensions. Typical sizes are 800x600 or 1024x768 pixels.

• The default image format for contact sheets is BMP, which creates very large image files. For this reason select another format, e.g. JPG or
GIF.

28
21 Strip of Images
The terms "panorama image" and "strip of images" are both used in XnView, and they mean the same thing: a group ("strip") of images joined either
horizontally or vertically to form a larger, single image. For example, here is a strip created from five images:

To create a strip of images:

♦ From the Create menu, choose Strip of Images.

♦ In the dialog box, add the images using the Add button. The selected files appear in the File List. Note that if you have
selected your images in the browser window before calling Strip of Images, those images will be automatically inserted
into the file list displayed in the dialog box.
♦ Change the order in which the images appear as needed, using the Move Up and Move Down buttons.
♦ Choose whether to have a horizontal (next to each other) or a vertical (one above the other ) alignment, using either the
Horizontal Adjustment or the Vertical Adjustment buttons.
♦ Check the Automatically adjust height or width button to make sure that your final strip of images has a uniform size in the
dimension in which the images are not being combined.
♦ Create the combined image by pressing the Create button, or abort the procedure with the Cancel button.

29
22 Filters
When you open a specific image and are operating in "Image"mode, XnView's Filter menu is available. The ways in which you can modify an image
using filters is more or less limitless. You can improve the sharpness, contrast, and brightness of your images or change them using effects such as
"Swirl". You will find below examples using the Misc and Effects sub menus. The heading of each image indicates which effect is being used.

Note that all effects, filters and adjustments can be applied not only to the complete image but also to parts. Select the desired area before applying the
effect, filter, or other adjustments.

From the Filters > Effects > Misc menu:

From the Filters > Effects > Effects menu:

31
24 Batch Conversion
Batch conversion is used for applying various graphical operations to an image, or set of images. The functionality is the same as NConvert, except
controlled via the XnView GUI rather than the command line. A large number of functions are available and multiple operations can be configured and
applied in one step. It is also easy to save a script of the configured functions, which facilitates convenient re-use. Many of the functions have
configurable parameters.

To apply batch processing, select the files that you wish to process using the browser view of XnView, then click the 'convert' button from the toolbar (or
'Batch Processing' from the edit menu or the right-click menu). This will bring up the batch processing window with your selected files listed. You can
also add or remove files from the list at this point, though it's not usually necessary.

The batch processing window has two tabs - 'General' and 'Transformations'. The window opens on 'General' and there are a couple of important
options you will want to pay attention to here. Firstly, if you want to retain your original images (recommended, because you can't undo most of the
functions once they're done), make sure you're either outputting into a different directory, or else you have the 'rename' option selected in the 'Overwrite'
field. Secondly, select the desired output file type. This is a very useful transformation in itself and may even be all you want to do in some cases.

After sorting that out, select the 'Transformations' tab. This is where all the interesting stuff is. If you fully expand out the list (click on the +'s), you'll see a
large list of functions. In order to apply any of these to your images either just double-click, or else single-click it and then click the 'Add' button. The
name will be copied into the right-hand box, which contains the list of functions that will be subsequently used. If the function has variable parameters
(not all do), then they will be displayed in the 'parameters' box, from where you can set the values. If you select something by accident or just change
your mind, click it in the right-hand box and select 'remove'

You'll notice you can apply several processing steps at once. There's probably a practical limit to how many are useful, because applying a lot in one go
can take a while. Also the more functions you apply at once, the less predictable the result. If you want to do lots, you may have more success applying
the changes in stages.

The effect of each of the functions is detailed here:

25 Web Page
With XnView, you can easily create a web page of your image collections. The created web page will have one or multiple main pages with thumbnails
of your images, within the user can navigate. By clicking on a specific thumbnail, the appropriate image is displayed.

Here is a sample Web page:

How To Create a Web page with Images:

♦ Open the XnView Browser.

♦ Go to the directory containing the image files.
♦ Select the images you want to create a Web page from.
♦ Choose the Menu Option Tools>Web Page or the applicable symbol from the toolbar. The dialog Web page Create is
displayed:

34
♦ In the Web page Create dialog, enter the title of the web page in the Title field.
♦ The thumbnails will be displayed in table form. In the panel "Table" you can define the number of columns or lines of
thumbnails per page. In addition, you can define the margin width of the table in pixels.
♦ In the panel "Thumbnail size" you can change Thumbnail Size as well as the output format of the thumbnails. The original
images are always copied 1:1, i.e. without any conversion. If needed, convert the images before creating the web page.
♦ In the panel Information displayed you define the information displayed, e.g. file name, file size, etc...
♦ In case you want to sort your images, you can define a Sorted by criteria. This can be file Name, extension type, and
many more.
♦ In the Output panel you define an output directory for the web page(s) and the thumbnails in the Directory field.
♦ You can decide whether to copy the original files 1:1 to the output directory by checking the Copy source images to output
folder check box. Check or uncheck this option if needed.
♦ You can also choose to automatically display the built web page by selecting the Launch web browser when done.
♦ Create the web page by pressing the Create.

XnView creates the web page with the images selected by you in the Output directory.

35
26 Slide show
A Free Slide Show on your PC!

Creating a slide show is very simple with XnView. The only complications arise in knowing what it is you want to do, and envisioning how the slide show
will look. XnView presents many options and choices for you to create exactly the slide show you wish to see. Here are a few things to consider.

• Images will be displayed in their actual sizes. You can control the "Display Area" size, but not the size of the image.

• You may select the images from within the Slide Show dialog, but you can also select them before executing the Slide Show function; use
Ctrl+<click> to select the images you wish to include, then go to Create > Slide Show. Images will be sequenced in the same order they were
selected, although you can change that order in the Slide Show dialog.

• If you are creating a slide show to send to somebody, you would normally create an EXE; this executable file contains a viewer and therefore
requires no other software. If you are making slide shows for use your own computer?i.e., on the same computer where you are making the
slide show?then you can just hit the "Save" button; since your computer already has XnView and the image, the SLD file is simply some
pointers.

Creating a Slide Show

Select the images you want in a slide show, run a menu option, and your slide show is ready. The steps are:

♦ Choose the Menu option Tools>Slide Shows.... The Slide Show dialog is displayed:

♦ The dialog consists of two panels, above the File List, the list of images to be included in the slide show, and below the
Options, which control the display options.
♦ Press the Add...button to add files to the list. The dialog Choose files is displayed:

36
In the Choose files dialog you can select one or more image files to be included in the slide show. Use the Ctrl key and Mouse
button to select several files.

♦ Selected files are then added to the file list by pressing the Add button.
♦ Confirm your choice with the OK button. These image files are now shown in the file list. Repeat these steps until you
have all the image files you want.
♦ The default display order in XnView is to show images in the same as the file list, from top to bottom. This can be
changed as required by using the Move Up and Move Down buttons until you have the order you want.
♦ Using the options in the Slide Show dialog and the general options which can be displayed using the Options buttons, you
can fine-tune the slide show and for example set duration, full-screen mode, and display or hide the name of the image
files.
♦ Start the Slide show by pressing the Go button. The slide show is then displayed (The default option is Full Screen
mode).
♦ If you have set the transition to "Use Keyboard Press our Mouse click", you can navigate using the mouse buttons or the
keyboard. The right mouse button displays the next picture, the left mouse button displays then previous. The arrows
keys can also be used to navigate through the slide show.

You can quit the slide show by pressing the Esc key. The Slide Show dialog is displayed, again. You can now add or remove images as required and
then run the slide show as many times as you like. You exit the Slide show dialog by pressing the Cancel key.

You can save the slide show by pressing the Save button and later load it again using the Open button. The list of image files and the current slide show
options are saved.

Tip

• You can select image files in the Browser. Then choose the menu item Tools>Slide Show... or the symbol from the toolbar. The dialog Slide
Show is displayed with the selected files already included in the File List.

• If you frequently make slide shows consisting of ALL the files in a particular directory and/or its sub-directories, to to Options > General >
Misc. and find look at the slide show option for automatic selection of files.

37
27 Resize
The Keep Ratio setting refers to the relationship between height and width, and determines whether you can change the image size in one dimension or
both. If Keep Ratio is checked, then you can change the width, for example, and XnView will automatically change the height so as to maintain the same
height-to-width ratio. If you uncheck Keep Ratio, then you can change both dimensions of the image?but of course this introduces distortion.

If you want to increase or reduce an image and its content, then open the image and then perform the size adjustment.

How To Increase or Reduce the Size of an Image:

♦ Open the image file.

♦ Choose the Menu item Image > Resize.
♦ In the Resize dialog, give the desired new size; in percentage or number of pixels.

If you change one dimension value, e.g. height, the other dimensions are changed to keep the current relationship. This will stop the image becoming
distorted. If you want to change this relationship and want to distort the image, then first uncheck the Keep ratio checkbox. You can change width and
height, independently, now.

If you only want to change the size of the image (canvas), and not the image's content, then use the menu item Image > Canvas Size.

38
28 Self Starting Slide Shows on CD
The previous topic Slide Shows describes how to create and display slide shows. However a much more elegant and attractive option would be to have
Slides Shows which are stored on CD, and which start automatically (without installing XnView) when the CD is put into a PC. Here a slide show
becomes an electronic photograph album which can be sent to friends and family.

The CD will include the image files, the slide show file, the XnView program and an additional file "autorun.inf". You will gather these contents
step-by-step. Please follow the steps below.

♦ First, you have to gather all the image files that you want to use in the slide show and burn on CD. For this, you create a
temporary directory e.g. temp_slideshow_dir, on your PC using windows Explorer or XnView the Browser; click on the
applicable symbol in the toolbar).
♦ Next step is to select and process the images. CD's have a capacity of about 700 MB, unless you want to save many
images on CD, that means more than 200 images, you do not have to care for file size. Also the images' dimension
(Width and height) does not matter too much, since XnView fits the images to the monitor's resolution - given that the
appropriate option has been set. Since monitor resolutions get higher and higher and your slide show should still look nice
in a couple of years, we recommend using the JPG image format with a 1600 x 1200 pixel resolution. You can resize an
image by opening the image in XnView and then select the menu Image>Resize image. For multiple images you use the
Batch Conversion. Naturally, you do not enlarge smaller images. When enlarging, no new details appear and XnView can
do the enlargement when setting the appropriate option, automatically.
♦ Select the images for your slide show. Copy them to the temporary directory created in the first step. Use either the
Windows Explorer or the XnView Browser (Edit>Copy to.... The Copy dialog is displayed.

♦ Input the target directory (e.g. temp_slideshow_dir) in the Copy dialog. This can be typed in directly or by using the ...
button. XnView remembers the target directory the next time the Copy dialog is opened and lists it in the drop down list.
Collect all image files in the temporary directory.
♦ Once all the images are collected in the temporary directory, creating the slide show is straight forward (described in
detail in the Slide Shows - Create and Display chapter).
♦ Choose the Menu option Tools>Slide Show.... The Slide Show dialog is displayed.
♦ In the Slide Show dialog, choose the button More Options.... The Options dialog is displayed, with the general slide show
options.
♦ Change the slide show options as required. The slide show should run independently of any paths and drives, therefore
check the Save Relative Paths in SLD file check box.
♦ Confirm your settings by pressing the OK button.
♦ In the Slide Show dialog, choose the Add Folder... option and select the temporary directory created earlier. After
confirming this directory, all the image files previously copied will be displayed in the File List.
♦ Change the display order and/or slide show options as required. Changes can be tested using the Go button.
♦ When you are satisfied with the selection, options and display order, save the slide show using Save.... The Save Picture
dialog is displayed.

39
♦ Save the slide show in the temporary directory previously created using a meaningful name e.g. "Holidays Crete 2003".
You do not need to specify a file extension, the extension *.sld is added automatically by XnView.
♦ You have now gathered the images and created the slide show, there are two things left. The slide show should work on
any PC, regardless of whether XnView is installed already or not. For this reason, on the CD you save a version of
XnView which can be directly started from CD. If you have not already done so, download the ZIP archive of XnView from
the web, the minimal version is sufficient. Unzip the ZIP-archive to the directory "temp_slideshow_dir". When unpacking
the ZIP-archive, the sub-directory called "XnView" is created automatically during unzipping.
♦ Finally the file "autorun.inf" must be created. Whenever inserting a CD, the system searches the CD for this file and if it
exists, it executes the commands contained. The file "autorun.inf" is a text file, which you can create using "Notepad".
Start the editor by selecting the windows menu Start>Programs>Accessories>Notepad. Notepad opens an empty text
document. Enter the lines below:
[autorun]
open=.\xnview\xnview.exe -slide "Holidays Crete 2003.sld"

♦ Save the text file as "autorun.inf" in the temporary directory previously created.
♦ Now you have gathered all the files and you can burn all the files to a CD. In case it's your first image CD with XnView,
we recommend to use a re-writeable CD and then check the slide-show. Insert the CD into your PC and if everything went
o.k., the slide show will start automatically.

30 Metadata
30.1 Metadata
In general, metadata is "data about data." In the case of XnView, metadata refers to information about images and image files.

Metadata is information about the image and/or file which cameras and image-generating programs attach to images to inform the user of a diverse
number items such as: Date and time of composition, camera settings. It also can include commentary and embedded thumbnails.

It is displayed in Xnview's preview area in its own tab according to the kind of metadata used.

Users who consider this type of data superfluous or confusing can remove some or all it with XnView's Clean Metadata function.

30.2 Exif
The "Exchangeable image file format" (official abbreviation Exif, not EXIF) is a specification for the image file format used by digital cameras. The
specification uses the existing JPEG, TIFF Rev. 6.0, and RIFF WAVE file formats, with the addition of specific metadata tags. It is not supported in
JPEG 2000, PNG, or GIF.

Exif was created by the Japan Electronic Industries Development Association (JEIDA). Version 2.1 of the specification is dated June 12, 1998, and
version 2.2 is dated April 2002 and is also known as Exif Print. The specification is not maintained by any industry or standards organisation, but it
remains in almost universal use by camera manufacturers.

The Exif tag structure is taken from that of TIFF files. There is a large overlap between the tags defined in the TIFF, Exif, TIFF/EP and DCF standards.
Tags defined in the Exif standard include:

• Date and time information. Digital cameras will record the current date and time and save this in the metadata.

• Camera settings. This includes static information such as the camera model and make, and information that varies with each image such as
orientation, aperture, shutter speed, focal length, metering mode, and ISO speed information.

• A thumbnail for previewing the picture on the camera's LCD screen, in file managers, or in photo manipulation software.

• Descriptions and copyright information.

This information was taken from the Exif entry at Wikipedia entry, which see for more information.

30.3 IPTC
IPTC metadata was developed by the International Press Telecommunications Council, which is a consortium of the world's major news agencies and
news industry vendors. It develops and maintains technical standards for improved news exchange that are used by virtually every major news
organization in the world.

In 1979, the IPTC defined a set of metadata attributes to be applied to images, and in 1994 Adobe defined a specification for actually embedding the
metadata into digital image files. These are known as "IPTC headers." In 2001, Adobe introduced something called "Extensible Metadata Platform"
(XMP), which is an XML schema for the same types of metadata as IPTC. The XMP specification describes techniques for how to embed the metadata
in JPEG, TIFF, JPEG2000, GIF, PNG, HTML, PostScript, PDF, SVG, Adobe Illustrator, and DNG files.

This information was taken from IPTC entry at Wikipedia entry, which see for more information.

43 Associations
If you double-click on a file on your desktop that ends in ".doc," MS Word is started and your document is opened. This happens because Windows
recognizes that MS Word is the program to use when opening ".doc" files. This relationship between file types and the programs used to open them is
accomplished by a table in the Windows registry which keeps track of these "associations."

File types are defined by the file's extension, which is the part of the filename to the right of the last dot in the filename. The extension for the file
"image.jpg" is ".jpg," and ".jpg" in turn is the file type that Windows looks at when determining which program to use when opening .jpg files. Because
Window identifies file types by that last part of the filename, you should never change a file's extension unless you explicitly need and want to do so?and
know what you're doing.

It is possible to associate XnView with any or all of the file types that XnView is capable of opening, which is essentially all image files. By setting up file
associations, in other words, you can have XnView be the program that opens and displays the image when double-clicking on any image type. Most
common image types (BMP, JPG, PNG, GIF, etc.) are associated by default with the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, a nice image viewer program
that comes with Windows. That viewer, however, is very simple and limited compared to XnView, so you may want to change your associations.

Important: Although Windows provides a way to associate programs and file types (in Windows Explorer > Tools > Folders > File Types), this method
will fail when associating files with XnView. When associating image files for XnView you MUST use XnView to set the associations.

♦ Start XnView
♦ Go to Tools > Options > System Integration > Associations
♦ Individually select the file types that you would like to associate with XnView, or use the tools provided to select all or a
subset of all file types
♦ Confirm the options dialog by clicking the "OK" button.

If associations are not set properly, XnView may start up when double-clicking on a file but may display an error message right after starting: "Error
opening <path name>". In this case please re-associate the image files using the above steps.

44 Uninstall
44.1 Installation
Installation of XnView can be done in two different ways: using the Setup program or ZIP archive. We recommend using the Setup program as this is
simple to use and allows for easy installation and uninstallation. Installation using the ZIP archive can also be done but is not described here.

If XnView is not installed already on your computer, please proceed as described below.

• Download the XnView setup program from the internet to a temporary directory on your PC. You will find the current version of XnView on the
XnView Website.

• Start the XnView setup program by double-clicking on the file in MS Explorer.

• Follow the on-screen instructions of the setup program.

44.2 Update
XnView is constantly being improved and refined. New versions of XnView are free of charge for private users. If you have purchased licenses as
private or commercial user, you are also entitled to download new versions of XnView without additional license fees.

If you already installed a version of XnView, and you want to replace this version with a new one, then you perform an update. Otherwise, if this is your
first installation, see Installation.

Update requires you the uninstall the old version and then install the new in the same directory. Please note that your personal settings and bookmarks
in XnView are not lost during update.

• Download the new version from the XnView Download Site. There are various versions available for download differing in size. Typically, the
minimal version (without any additional languages, and without plug-ins) is sufficient.

• Uninstall/Uninstall XnView using the windows menu Start > Program > XnView > XnView Uninstall.

• Confirm the message box asking for confirmation for the uninstall by clicking the OK button. The program files, directories and registry entries
of XnView are removed from your computer.

• Start the XnView setup program by double-clicking on the downloaded file.

• Follow the instructions of the setup program. During setup, you will be informed that the program directory already exists. Confirm this
message box with Yes.

44.3 Uninstall
How To Uninstall XnView after it has been installed using the Setup Program:

Select the Windows menu Start > Program > XnView > XnView Uninstall.

• A message box will be displayed. If you want to continue uninstalling XnView choose Yes.

• XnView program files, directories and Registry entries on your computer are removed.

• Some configuration files may need to be deleted manually (xnview.ini and bookmark.ini) after the uninstall is finished.

How To Uninstall XnView after it has been installed using the Zip Archive:

• Delete the XnView Program directory and the files contained.

• Delete the file "xnview.ini" in the Windows directory (e.g. C:\Windows).

• If you have created any, delete any links or symbols to XnView in the Program Group.

45 Shortcut Keys
XnView has shortcut keys for most actions that one might want to perform. Many of the keystrokes depend on the mode in which XnView is operating,
so the following lists of shortcuts are broken down into three sections, based the display mode: Browser Mode, Viewer Mode, or All Modes (i.e., keys
that work the same in both modes).

Moreover, there are some Mouse Shortcuts.

The best way to learn the shortcut keys is simply by looking at the menu option you use to execute an operation; the shortcut key is normally shown on
the menu, to the right of the description of the operation. If you frequently create file listings, for example (and this is a really excellent feature of XnView
that can be used for many purposes!), you would use the menu Create > File Listing. Note that off to the right of the words "File Listing" the menu shows
"Shift+L." That means that the keystoke Shift (holded) plus the "L" key takes you straight to the File Listing function. Experienced users normally prefer
the shortcut keys to using the mouse and menus, because it is faster.

Many of XnView's shortcut keys are customizable, meaning that they can be changed by the user. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to find the menu
or option where the change can be made. The location of the option is noted in the following sections, where possible. Many of the keyboard/mouse
shortcut keys are set in Tools > Options > General > Keyboard/Mouse.

For an in-depth discussion about shortcut keys, and how to extend XnView's shortcut keys, see the XnView forum topic How to change, or/and create
new keyboard shortcuts.

50 Settings and Ini Files
The following is intended for programmers and other technical personnel.

XnView settings are for example position and size at startup, recent file lists, or the options which you set in the options dialog. All these settings have to
be stored when exiting the program and restored when starting. Normally, you use XnView and change settings in the options, and you do not have to
worry how they are stored and where they are stored.

In some cases, it's still good to know and understand, where XnView stores its settings. Below you will find various info on XnView's settings.

The place where your settings are stored depends on the option "Use registry to save options", which you can find by selecting menu "Tools > Options",
category "System integration".

Settings stored in .ini files

By default this setting is deactivated and all your XnView settings/options are stored in two files:

♦ bookmark.ini: contains the favourites that you can set using the toolbar in the browser ("Add Favourite...")
♦ xnview.ini: contains all the rest, i.e. setting of options, recent file and directory list, ...

Location of .ini files

The two .ini files are located in the program directory of XnView, typically C:\Program Files\XnView.

So if you want to have the same settings on another PC or want to make a backup of your settings, it's sufficient to copy these two
files.

Settings stored in Windows Registry

If you have activated the option "Use registry to save options", all the XnView settings will be stored in your registry under the key
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\XnView" and you can use "regedit" to export and import the settings. But this is for advanced
PC users, only.

Settings and XnView update

When updating XnView, you typically uninstall your current version and then install the new version.

The two .ini files 'xnview.ini' and 'bookmark.ini' which are used to store the settings and the favourites of XnView, are not part of the
installation and uninstallation and will not be changed or deleted. So when updating, the settings will be untouched and won't be
lost.

For those who want to remove all XnView files, this is a bit of extra work, since the two .ini files have to be deleted manually. Sure
enough, the uninstallation routine could be smarter and ask the user whether he/she wants to uninstall the .ini files, too, but this has
not been done, yet. Sorry.

Editing settings manually

The .ini files are normal text files which can be opened using any text editor. All settings stored in the .ini file can be changed using
XnView's option dialog ("Tools > Options"), so normally there should be no need to edit and change the settings manually.

Editing .ini files can be done, but when doing so each user should know what he/she does and it's at own risk: Normally XnView is
forgiving, but in rare cases wrong entries might even cause GPFs at start-up.

63
51 Command Line Operations
You may set up a custom shortcut to launch XnView, or use "Run...", for the purpose of executing XnView functions without (or in addition to) launching
its normal user interface. In this case, various switches may be used on the command line. The syntax for these commands is the program name,
followed by a space and then a hyphen, followed by one or more switches, and each switch must have its specification, if applicable. For example, here
is a command-line command showing proper syntax:

<path>xnview.exe -capture=desktop,c:\file.ext

Two Important Points

♦ There is a space after "xnview.exe" and before the switch

♦ "<path>" means that the full path/filespec must be included in the command. Normally this will be "c:\program
files\xnview" and the full command would therefore be "c:\program files\xnview\xnview.exe". However, since the location
of xnview.exe is under user control via the installation program, other paths are possible.

Capture

Here are some sample capture commands:

<path>xnview.exe -capture=window
<path>xnview.exe -capture=desktop

<path>xnview.exe -capture=window:\file.ext
<path>xnview.exe -capture=desktop,c:\file.ext

<path>xnview.exe -capture=window,c:\file#.ext
<path>xnview.exe -capture=desktop,c:\file_###.ext

<path>xnview.exe -capture=window,d:\screenshot$.ext
<path>xnview.exe -capture=desktop,d:\screenshot_$.ext

where # is a number (# = 1 or 2 or 3, etc., and ### = 832 or 741, etc.) and $ is a date and time such as 08132007_214818

Extension is taken from the Capture setup dialog. Path and file name is customizable. Screenshot is created, saved and then XnView exits, when using
path and file name.

You can create a desktop icon with those parameters and assign a shortcut key / hotkey, then it's possible to make screenshot(s) with a single key.

Thanks to "Dreamer" for contributing and reviewing the information on shortcut keys; September 2007.

52 Total Commander
The file manager Total Commander supports XnView as an Add-On. This is done by configuring Total Commander to use XnView as the viewer for
graphic files.

How To Configure XnView in Total Commander Version 6.0 as an External File Browser:

♦ Start Total Commander

♦ Select the menu Options > Configure to open the Configuration dialog
♦ In the Configuration dialog select the category Operation > Edit/View.
♦ Select the button Configure Internal Viewer... to open the dialog Configure Lister.
♦ Select the option Use IrfanView/XnView to view graphics other than BMP.
♦ In the Path field, enter the full path name of the XnView program. Typically this is C:\Program Files\XnView\xnview.exe

♦ Confirm this option by pressing the OK button.

The next time you use the F3 function key to display graphics, XnView will be started and show the image.

Hints

♦ The image formats *.BMP, *.WMF and *.ICO (32 x 32 pixel, 16 and 256 colours) can output directly to Total Commander
using the internal file browser. XnView does not need to be used as an external file browser for these formats.
♦ XnView works in Total Commander for Windows® 9x, NT 4.0, 2000, XP, and ME.
♦ For Windows 3.1® with Win32s, XnView works with Total Commander 16 bit. Currently only the JPG format is supported
in Windows 3.1 ®. It is planned to incorporate the GIF or PNG formats in future releases.
♦ Due to technical restriction, only one frame can be displayed for animated GIF files.
