CHAPTER 10
IV
"Introduction"
There are several conventions (standard Window application terms and procedures) that the
operator should be aware of before starting to work with this C.A.D. / C.A.M. package.
If you are conversant with Windows and the standards it uses for user interface, you can skip this
introduction, otherwise we strongly recommend that you read it before proceeding.
In any event, we recommend that the operator consults the Glossary of technical terms. This
will ensure easier comprehension of the explanatory notes in this documentation.
This documentation, which is supplied with each installation of the "CAD/3" software package,
is available in various forms; it is therefore possible to consult it in the form of on-line help on
the computer, or in the hard copy manual version.
The manual is divided into "Chapters" and "Headings", while the on-line help is divided
according to "Topics".
Each heading of the manual corresponds to a Help topic, describing in full each individual
command of the "CAD/3" package.
All the commands implemented in this C.A.D. system are sorted according to topic and included
in 10 Pull-down menus.
Each pull-down menu has a title, all 10 of which are displayed in the Menu bar.
Moreover, many of the more frequently used commands in this C.A.D. system are provided in
the form of Icons.
Also the icons are sorted according to the same method used for the commands, so that the
Toolboxes have the same title as the pull-down menus to which they relate.
Almost all the commands of this C.A.D. system, once they have been activated, call up the
relevant Dialog-box to guide the operator and facilitate data input.
A dialog-box is normally composed of a Caption, one or more Edit fields, one or more Selectable
options, and one or more Command button.
All the commands in this "CAD/3" package can be activated either using the Keys on the
keyboard or the Mouse.
However, the most effective solution is to use both the keyboard and the mouse, depending on
the circumstances.
We therefore recommend that the operator should read the information under Using the mouse
and Using the keys.
If you are using the on-line Help you will note that there are several words highlighted in green.
There are two types:
- normal - with broken underlining,
- bold - with continuous underlining,
Furthermore, by positioning the cursor (normally an arrow symbol) on these text items, they will
switch to a pointing hand symbol with the index finger raised. See below.
V
This symbol indicates that you are on a "context-sensitive" zone.
The context-sensitive zones, which can be images (pull-down menus, toolboxes, etc.) allow the
operator to make a temporary or permanent "jump".
- The words displayed in green with broken underlining (assuming they are selected and active)
allow the operator to display a temporary box containing additional information regarding the
meaning of the text shown in green. If you then press any key the box will disappear and the
previous situation will be restored.
- The green words in bold with continuous underlining (if selected and active) allow you to skip
from one to another, and abandon the previous one.
There are various other access procedures and methods to consult the Help system, to get more
information simply doubleclick the last underlined word in this paragraph.

"Box captions":
The "caption" is a typical characteristic of all Windows applications. Captions are displayed at
the top of all windows or boxes.
The area at the top of windows or boxes is divided into three parts:
The left area is the "system menu" box; if you click this area a pull-down menu containing
various commands will appear, the contents of which concern the window in question, and
change accordingly.
At the center there is the window caption, selecting the caption is the most practical method of
moving the window around on the screen.
The right hand part of the line contains the reduce and/or enlarge buttons, which can be used to
close, i.e. exit from the window..
NOTE: The central part of the caption box is the only one that is always present in all cases, the
other two parts may or may not be present, depending on the particular case.
"C.A.D.":
C.A.D. stands for Computer Aided Design. A C.A.D. application or SW package is a set of
programs that allow the user to make simple or complex drawings using a computer, providing a
series of instructions and commands that simplify the operator's work.
"C.A.M.":
C.A.M. stands for Computer Aided Manufacturing. A C.A.M. application or SW package is a set
of programs that allow the user to compile work programs for electronically controlled machine
tools (the resulting programs can be executed by the numerical control unit connected to the
machine) using the original drawing as a starting point.
Processing of the drawing, optimization of the various machining stages, and conversion of the
program into ISO language (or similar) are all operations performed by the computer with the
purpose of making the operator's job easier.
A2
Appendix A: "Glossary of technical terms"
"C.I.D.":
"Command buttons":
The expression "command buttons" refers to the buttons represented on the video screen.
The buttons are used to activate a command once it has been selected.
The buttons are displayed in the dialog-boxes, once they are clicked they operate instantly.
The command buttons can be operated with the mouse or from the keyboard.
"D.X.F.":
The expression Draw eXchange Format, refers to the system for interchanging drawings between
different C.A.D. or C.A.M. packages.
Each C.A.D./C.A.M. is designed to manage drawings using one or more storage formats for
geometrical and technological data.
In order to permit the exchange of drawings between different software packages, a series of
standards have been established, of which D.X.F. (used by "Auto CAD") is among the most
widely adopted.
A3
Appendix A: "Glossary of technical terms"
"Dialog-box":
The expression "dialog-box" refers to the windows (can either be very small or large enough to
almost fill the screen) that are displayed when a command is activated.
Dialog-boxes can contain:
− selectable options,
− edit fields,
− command buttons,
each identified with explanatory letters or graphics.
"Digitizer":
A "digitizer" (can be a graphics tablet or an electronic drawing board) is an electronic device that
serves to input an outline drawn on paper.
Acquisition of a drawing or single points using a digitizer is performed by transmitting to the
computer the coordinates defining the position of the pointing device on the digitizer.
A4
Appendix A: "Glossary of technical terms"
"Edit fields":
The expression "edit fields" refers to all the windows in a dialog-box into which alphanumeric
values can be input, but which do not serve to activate commands, because they are exclusively
for data settings or command setups.
Edit fields are frequently used to enter precise numerical values that cannot be generated in any
other manner.
Edit fields can be selected using the mouse or from the keyboard, although the alphanumeric
contents must be entered from the keyboard.
A check is made of whether arithmetical operators or numerical functions have been inserted
because in this case, any expression is solved and the obtained value is put in the place of the
original expression. This check is active in all fields of displayed windows if the operator draws
in aided mode.
Arithmetical operators :
+ addition
- subtraction, sign reversion
* multiplication
/ division
% division module
^ raising to 'nth' power
Arithmetical functions:
_B absolute value
_R square root
_S sine
_C cosine
_A arc tangent
_I integer portion

20%4 equals 0
A6
Appendix A: "Glossary of technical terms"
"Entity":
"Formats":
The expression "formats" refers to the methods of memorization of drawing file data utilized by
the following C.A.D. system:
C.I.D.: this format uses exclusively ASCII code for the exchange of drawings in the form
of geometrical and technological data. There is a first release (Cid) and an updated
release (Cid/3).
D.X.F.: standard memorization format, developed specifically for Auto CAD, and adopted
by almost all the main C.A.D. systems. D.X.F. can be divided as follows:
GENERIC: makes no distinction between PLINEs and therefore does not distinguish between
two or three dimensions.
2D: two dimensional, with the option of using levels to classify PLINEs into
machining with the router, blade cuts, and vertical and horizontal drills.
3D: three dimensional, with the option using levels to classify PLINEs into machining
with the router, blade cuts, vertical and horizontal drills, each associated with
depth values.
"Icon":
A7
Appendix A: "Glossary of technical terms"
"Keys":
"Space bar" this is the longest key (in this case called a bar) and is located centrally at the
bottom of the keyboard.
"Alt" The "Alt" is usually on the right and/or on the left of the "Space bar".
"Ctrl" The "Control" key is usually on the right and/or left of the "Alt" key(s).
"Shift" The " × " (Shift) key is usually above the "Ctrl", key on the right and left of the
keyboard.
"Tab" The "Tabulation" key is usually on the left, beneath the number 1 key.
"Enter" "Enter" or "Return" is usually on the right, above the right hand "Shift" key.
"Esc" The "Escape" key is usually the first key at the top left of the keyboard.
"F1" The "F1" key is the first function key and is generally located next to the "Esc"
key.
"Arrow" The four arrow keys: up/down and right/left are normally
on the right hand side of the keyboard. The arrow keys are used to move the
cursor.
For more information regarding the keyboard, refer to the glossary heading Using the keys.
"Layers":
"Menu bar":
The expression "menu bar" refers to the second bar from the top of the screen containing the
names of the pull-down menus.
The menu bar is used to open the menus, selectable with the mouse or from the keyboard.
A8
Appendix A: "Glossary of technical terms"
"Mouse":
A "mouse" is a cursor pointing device and is virtually indispensable in all Windows applications.
Your mouse may have either two or three buttons, but in any case only the right and left buttons
are utilized.
For the sake of clarity we will refer to button number 1 and button number 2 from now on, since
button number 1 is not always located on the left side of the mouse.
Whenever a mouse button is mentioned, it will be automatically the left button (number 1) unless
specified otherwise.
Procedures for use of the mouse in this C.A.D. system are in accordance with Windows standard
procedures.
For further information regarding the use of the mouse, please see the glossary heading
Using the mouse.
"Node":
"Node" means the end point of an entity if this coincides with the start point of another entity
forming part of the same PLINE.
A PLINE is formed of two or more entities all connected together continuously.
The connection point between two adjacent entities is a node.
"Piece":
As a rule, "piece" means a wood panel, a sheet of glass, plastic or aluminium, or a slab of marble
or any other work material of parallelepiped form.
Although pieces are usually parallelepipeds, this does not mean that C.A.D: cannot be used to
manage blank parts of the widest possible range of different shapes.
Management of parallelepiped shaped work, is facilitated since, being the most frequently
occurring case, it is a dedicated function of this C.A.D. application.
"PLINE":
The concept of "PLINE" (or poly-line) is paramount to the concept of a continuous working
implemented in series 2 C.A.D. applications.
A PLINE is a continuous collection of single geometrical entities (lines and arcs) all
interconnected, with which a single set of technological data is associated.
Two entities can be connected together only if the end point of the first is identical to the starting
point of the second, and so forth.
The entities must also be drawn without any breaks, or alternatively they can be drawn separately
and then connected.
A9
Appendix A: "Glossary of technical terms"
"Pull-down menus":
"Pull-down menus" are the menus that are displayed beneath each item of the menu bar.
They are used to activate the various options they contain: pull-down menus can be opened using
the mouse or the keyboard.
There is always one option displayed in negative text mode, i.e. with the text and background
colours inverted..
This highlighted option is the one that will be activated if selection is confirmed.
"Selectable options":
The expression "selectable options" refers to options in a dialog-box that can be either enabled
or disabled, but that do not serve to activate commands; on the contrary, they are used only for
settings or command setups.
A selectable option can be either enabled or disabled.
Each option selected is highlighted by a small border displayed around the name of the box.
There are two types of selectable options - circular (radio buttons) or square (check boxes):
Only one of a set of radio buttons can be activated at any one time, when the next button is
activated the previous one will be automatically deactivated. Moreover, the arrow keys must be
used to scan all the buttons, the "Tab" key serves exclusively to open or exit a group of buttons.
Any option in a set of check boxes can be active, irrespective of the status of the remaining
boxes. In this case, the arrow keys or "Tab" can be used indifferently to scan all the check boxes.
The same procedure is used to switch from one status to the other.
Check boxes and radio buttons can be accessed with the mouse or from the keyboard.
A 10
Appendix A: "Glossary of technical terms"
"Toolbox":
"Trace":
"Trace" refers to a graphic function that allows the operator to get a preview view of the entities
that are to be drawn during the creation of PLINEs.
In certain cases trace does not indicate the entity currently being drawn, but just one of its
parameters such as the angle, the length, and so forth.
You can access trace by keeping the mouse button pressed when drawing, rather than releasing it
immediately.
If you move around with the mouse the result is dynamic tracing, while releasing the button
confirms the entity or parameter that you were in the process of defining.

Appendix B: "Edit Technological and Custom Data"

B1
Appendix B: "Edit Technological and Custom Data"
Introduction:
Technological data are sets of information describing how a PLINE is to be worked on the
machine. The information includes, for example, the definition of the tool to be used, the speed
of rotation, the type of offset correction etc..
Description:
This part, providing a description by means of a series of partial views, is used to associate
technological data to the PLINEs contained in the current Layer. Normally each datum is
accompanied by a figure to aid recognition. These figures are styled to provide intuitive
comprehension of the significance and purpose of the relative datum.
Notes:
1) Several of the following partial views are complete with a Selectable option for the default
value. When this option box is activated it results in a colour change of the Edit field with
which it is linked, because the value in the field is no longer required. During C.A.M.
procedures the value is automatically established on the basis of the logic for the selection
of default technological data.
2) If you access this technological data editor after having selected a set of PLINEs, the data
you input and confirm (by clicking the relative Command button) are automatically
associated with all the selected PLINEs (see also partial view number 9).
3) If this technological data editor is accessed with a group of selected PLINES, the editing
fields are all reset if the technological data is not the same for all of the PLINES.
Otherwise, the editing fields are filled with this technological data..
B2
Appendix B: "Edit Technological and Custom Data"
These two Edit fields serve to define the tool associated with the PLINE, more precisely the
operator must first enter the number of the category followed by the type.
The category represents the dedicated function of a given tool, (e.g. for drilling, for X or Y blade
cuts, for routing, etc.), while the type indicates the form of the tool within the context of the
category.
Using the Command buttons or the Keys Page-Up Page-Down you can increase or decrease the
value being edited by one unit at a time.
To make an instant check of the data, the drawings showing the category and type of tool are
called from one of the installation files and displayed above the edit fields. If a large question
mark (?) appears, this means that the drawing was not found so that the datum is almost certainly
unacceptable.
Using these three Command buttons the operator can define, respectively, the direction of tool
rotation, the use of sharp corners, and the working direction of the PLINE.
Each of the command buttons is accompanied by three figures showing three statuses:
− rotation direction clockwise, counter-clockwise or default;
− sharp corners activated, deactivated or default;
− working direction forward, inverted or default.
Note that the drawing of the tool type changes in accordance with the selected direction of
rotation.
B3
Appendix B: "Edit Technological and Custom Data"
These three Edit fields serve for the input, respectively, of the diameter, the AZIMUTH angle
and the ZENITH angle of the tool.
The azimuth angle refers to a possible inclination with respect to the vertical axis, the zenith
angle indicates inclination along the horizontal axis. Using these two angles you can determine
the position of the tool to use for working of the PLINE.
These three Edit fields allow the operator to enter, respectively, the speed of rotation, the feed
speed and the descent speed of the tool.
The first of these values is a whole number because it expresses tool rotation rpm.
The other two parameters can include decimal places because they express speed in terms of
metres per minute.
B4
Appendix B: "Edit Technological and Custom Data"
With these three Command buttons the operator can confirm data input (OK), quit the input
mode (CANCEL) or obtain information regarding its use (Help).
The data to enter concern tool radius correction to be executed at the entry to and exit from the
PLINE. The left side refers to tool radius correction at the entry position, the right side refers to
correction at the exit position. Use the Command buttons to select the type of correction,
checking the drawing that is displayed each time the buttons are clicked.
The Selectable option with the percent symbol (%) is used to interpret the value of the Edit field
beneath: if the option is not activated the value represents a distance, in millimetres, from the
PLINE, if the option is activated, the value represents a percentage of the tool diameter.
The central button marked with an equals sign (=) sets the condition that the tool radius
correction at the exit position must be identical to that at the entry position, updating the data at
each input; if the equals sign is marked with a red cross, the correction data are no longer
dependent on each other.
B5
Appendix B: "Edit Technological and Custom Data"
The first Edit field serves to input the distance between the PLINE in question and the PLINE
parallel to it. In practice this datum means that the original PLINE is no longer to be considered
but rather the one that is parallel to it; if this distance is equal to zero, the two PLINEs coincide
and, in practice, the parallel PLINE does not exist. This information will be utilized only during
the CAM stage for parallel working.
The second Edit field serves to input the distance of the working depth. This datum indicates that
the PLINE must be machined at a parallel depth of the given value. In more simple terms, the
data that is input will be added to the depths of the various Entities contained. Also this
information is utilized only during CAM procedures.
The third Edit field is used to enter tangency tolerance. This datum is used during CAM
procedures to decide whether to break a PLINE up into several separate workings. At each
connect point between entities the tangents of the two ends are calculated, the difference of the
angles of the two tangents is then compared to the value entered in this field, if the difference is
greater than the set value then the two entities will be generated in two separate workings.
The data to be input concern the type of working associated with the PLINE.
If it is activated, the Selectable option allows the operator to enter or select the name of a file
containing working types; all the editor data will consequently become non-significant because
during CAM procedures only the data contained in the specified file will be considered.
Notes:
A working type file is a collection of technological data.
The working types editor allows the operator to create a certain number of steps, each of which
can be modified using this Edit Technological Data function.
In practice, the association of a type of working with a given PLINE makes it possible to cause
the Control Unit to command several passes of the same working, one for each pass contained in
the working type file.
Within a working type it is not possible to associate other types of working: the selectable
options box and the Edit field cannot be modified.
B6
Appendix B: "Edit Technological and Custom Data"
With these two Buttons the operator can pass on to insertion of the data of the previous or next
PLINE depending on which button is pressed (<< previous, >>next). These buttons appear if the
operator has entered this technological editor without having selected any PLINES.
If one or more PLINES are selected, this special selectable option will appear to allow the
operator to decide whether, on confirmation of the data with the 'OK' button, all data or only
modified data has to be taken into consideration. The default position indicates that all data is
confirmed.
The data to enter concern the depth at the entry and exit positions of the PLINE. This function,
enabled by the first Button, allows to recalculate the depth of all Entities in order to get a linear
trend from the input depth to the output depth.
The left side refers to the depth at the entry position and the right side refers to the depth at the
exit position.
The central button, with the equals sign (=) links the exit depth to the same value as the entry
depth, updating the values at each input; if the equals sign is marked with a red cross then the
data link is disabled.
B7
Appendix B: "Edit Technological and Custom Data"
Introduction:
Custom data are a set of information that describes a single point working, which differs from a
PLINE because it is made up of a single point at which to perform the machining task. Single
point data include drillings (horizontal, vertical, inclined, etc.) and inserts.
As in the case of the PLINEs, these data require certain information defining how to perform the
work on the machine. For example which tool to use, the diameter, etc..
Description:
The description, provided by a series of partial views, is used to enter custom data in the current
Layer. Normally each datum is accompanied by a drawing to aid recognition; these figures
provide intuitive comprehension of the significance and purpose of each datum.
Notes:
1) If access to this special data editor is gained after having selected a group of drills, the data
which will then be inserted and confirmed (by means of the 'OK' Button) will be
automatically associated with all the drills selected (see also partial view number 7).
2) If this special data editor is accessed with a selected group of drills, the editing fields are all
reset if the special data is not the same for all drills. Otherwise, the editing fields are filled
with this special data.
B8
Appendix B: "Edit Technological and Custom Data"
These three Edit fields allow the operator to enter the X, Y Z coordinates of the point at which
the machining is to be performed.
With these two Edit fields it is possible to enter, respectively, the diameter of the tool and the
machining depth.
Figure 12.3 Partial view of the Edit Custom Data dialog box.
With these two Edit fields the operator defines the tool associated with the custom data; more
precisely, first the operator enters the number of the category and then the tool type. The category
is the dedicated function of a tool (e.g. for drilling, for blade cuts in X or Y, for routing, etc.),
while the type indicates the form of the tool within the category.
Using the Command buttons or the Keys Page-Up Page-Down the value being edited can be
increased or decreased by one unit at a time.
For an immediate check of the data the drawings of the category and type of tool are called from
an installation file and displayed above the edit fields. If a large question mark is displayed (?) it
means that the drawing was not found so it is highly probable that the datum is unacceptable.
B9
Appendix B: "Edit Technological and Custom Data"
With these two Edit fields it is possible to enter, respectively, the AZIMUTH angle and the
ZENITH angle of the tool.
The azimuth angle refers to an inclination with respect to the vertical axis, while the zenith angle
refers to a horizontal inclination. Using these two angles it is possible to calculate the position of
the tool to be used for the machining.
The Selectable options allow the operator to enter the values to input in the foregoing fields in
order to work on the six basic faces of the work, i.e. the six sides of a Piece. These boxes provide
a handy shortcut to establish the position of the tool in the case of drillings on the six faces of the
piece.
With these Selectable options it is possible to enter the reference corner for the X, Y and Z
coordinates of the working. This datum allows the operator to obtain the working (described by
the custom data) referred to the selected corner and with the positive dimensions toward the
center of the Piece.
For example, if we leave the coordinates of the working unchanged (X=0, Y=0) and change only
the reference corner, the result will be a working on each corner.
B 10
Appendix B: "Edit Technological and Custom Data"
Enter the number of repeats in the Edit field located next to the letter n with a question mark
(N?).
1) orthogonal repeats are distinguished by offsets (in X, Y, and Z) that must be added to the
coordinates for each repeat. The letters OX (X offset), OY (Y offset) and OZ (Z offset).
The field with the symbol of an angle cannot be modified.
2) linear repeats are distinguished by the distance between two adjacent repeats and an
angle. Therefore all the various workings arranged in a straight line with any angle are
taken into consideration. The first edit field is designated OL (length between repeats).
The other two fields are not utilized, while the field with the symbol of an angle is used to
enter the angle of the straight line.
3) The angular type gives the coordinates of a center and an angle; the distance from the first
working and this center is considered as the radius of the circle. The repeats are effected
over this circumference with a step that can be entered in the field with the angle symbol.
Therefore, the names of the first three Edit fields show the letters CX (X coordinate of the
center), CY (Y coordinate of the center) and CZ (Z coordinate of the center).
B 11
Appendix B: "Edit Technological and Custom Data"
With these two Bottons the operator can pass on to insertion of the previous or next special data,
depending on which button is pressed (<< previous, >> next). These buttons appear if this special
data editor has been accessed without having selected any drills.
If one or more drills are selected, this special selectable option to allow the operator to decide
whether, on confirmation of the data with the 'OK' button, all data or only modified data has to be
considered. The default position indicates confirmation of all data.
With these three Command buttons it is possible to confirm data input (OK), exit the data input
mode (CANCEL) and obtain information on how to use it (Help).
