Lesson Plan

Grade/Subject: 2/ Science Unit:Boats and Buoyancy Lesson Duration: 1 hour

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General Learning Outcomes:

GLO: 2-7 Construct objects that will float on and move through water, and evaluate
various designs for watercraft.

Specific Learning Outcomes:

Specific Learner Expectations
Students will:
1. Describe, classify and order materials on the basis of their buoyancy. Students who
have achieved this expectation will distinguish between materials that sink in water and
those that float. They will also be aware that some "floaters" sit mostly above water,
while others sit mostly below water. The terms buoyancy and density may be
introduced but are not required as part of this learning expectation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will:
1. Be experimenting (B) with objects that either float or sink (P) by placing them in the waters and
recording their findings (M).

ASSESSMENTS

Observations: Key Questions:

Written/Performance Assessments:
● Sticky note prediction.
● Recording sheet

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT

● Floating and sinking objects

● 4 totes
● Recording sheets
● Sticky notes

PROCEDURE

Introduction (__min.):

Hook/Attention Grabber: Last science class we started our Boats and Buoyancy unit. Quickly allow
students recall the activities we did and what we learned from them.

Assessment of Prior Knowledge: Review the term BUOYANCY quickly

Expectations for Learning and Behaviour: Last science class we did a few activities that we all moved
around and we had balloons and everyone remember to listen and that was great. Today we will do fun
activities that will require us to get out of our seats and move around. Remember our class rules and
we will have fun learning.

Advance Organizer/Agenda:
Write on the board
● Review predictions
● Write on sticky notes
● Float or sink object in four different stations
● Final discussion
● Write on sticky notes and hand them in.

Body (__min.):
Learning Activity #1: Review and discussion the predictions we did on the interactive drawing last
science class. Point out a few of the floating and sinking predictions.
(Keep these predictions up on the board so that students can refer back to them if they choose. )

Assessments/Differentiation: If there is a student that missed the first class this will be a good catching up point
along with the introduction.

Learning Activity #2: Students predictions.

On a stick note students will write on the front side they will write a number one and write or draw one
item they think will float and one item they think will sink. At the end of class we will see if your right or
wrong. Make sure students know this isn’t a quiz but just away to see our predictions.

Learning Activity #3: Students will experiment with the floating or sinking items in their tables groups.
Each table will have different items and students will rotate through all the items and record their
findings.
Each group will have 8 minutes at each table so that everyone in the group gets a chance to place the
objects in the water and record.
Assessments/Differentiation: Provide a recording sheet for students to record whether each item floats or sinks so
we can review and discuss it as a class at the end.

Learning Activity #4: Compare the students finding with the predictions on the interactive drawing. We will point
out items we were right on and items that we were wrong and place them correctly.

Closure ( __min.):

Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: On their sticky note students will right yes or no by the items
they predicted correctly.

Feedback From Students: Ask students how they thought science class went and what they learned.

Feedback To Students:Give feedback to the students about these learning activities and their
participation. Point out the pros and cons of their behavior but focus on the pros because this class
listens very well.

Transition To Next Lesson: Next class we will experiment with one item that I know that floats and
change it to make it sink and have one item that I know that sinks and do something with the water to
make it float. It will be fun and delicious.
